Middle East
Broken Ties
Early Monday morning, the Middle Eastern countries of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Libya officially cut diplomatic ties with Qatar. Saudi Arabia is citing Qatar's tacit endorsement of Iranian-backed terrorism. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are giving Qatari diplomats 48 hours and all Qatari nationals two weeks to leave their countries. In response, Qatar emir Sheik Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani claimed that the severance of relations have "no justification" and are "baseless."

This map shows the countries that have severed diplomatic relations with Qatar in yellow and the peninsular country in blue. Click on the map to learn more about the story.

India
Big News in the Bay of Bengal
India has successfully launched a rocket weighing a massive 640 tons into space. Many are claiming that this is a huge step for India's Space Research Organization (ISRO) as it will greatly reduce their reliance on European rockets to launch their satellites. According to experts with the Institute for Defense Studies and Analysis, this successful launch will allow for the Indian space organization to launch different satellites with varying weights. Spirits appear to be high as one source enthusiastically stated that "this is a double quantum jump for India." Confident from this success, ISRO hopes to make India the fourth country to send a human into space.

This map shows the flight path of the GSLV Mk3 rocket and the various stages of separation. Click the map to expand.

Iraq
Surrendering Baaj
Baaj had been under the Islamist militant's control throughout the 14 years of war and insurgency. Recently, the Islamic State has surrendered Baaj, known as a hideout of the terrorist group's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Throughout Sunday, the Popular Mobilisation Front, an umbrella organization for pro-government paramilitaries that is dominated by Iran-backed Shia militias, raised Iraqi flags and banners where Isis flags had flown since mid-2014.

The map depicts the location of the key town of Baaj in northwest Iraq, known as the hideout of the terrorist leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Click on the map to learn more about the story.

GeoQuestion
Friday's Answer
Q: What is the only state in the U.S. that grows coffee commercially?

A: Hawaii
As you might have guessed, the only state in the U.S. with the conditions suitable for commercial coffee production is Hawaii. While Puerto Rico does have the capacity to grow coffee and has had a coffee industry for some time, it is not a state but rather a U.S. territory and is disqualified on this technicality.
