Message from the President
 
On behalf of all NSAA members, I would like to extend my congratulations and welcome to our newly licensed architects who joined the NSAA this past year: Justin Cormier (TEAL Architects + Planners Inc.), Graham Edgar (Wild Salt Architecture Inc.),
Marc Andre Gaudet (NS Dept. of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal),
Karina Montalvo-Lagunes  (NS Dept. of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal),
and Jordan Rice (DSRA Architecture Inc.).

I would also like to welcome our newest three members to council: Kim Cooke (NS Dept. of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal), Deborah Eaton (Stantec Architecture Ltd.), and Sheena Moore (Fowler Bauld & Mitchell Ltd.). I look forward to working with you all over the next year.

Finally, I wish to extend my thanks to those who were presented with the 2017 President's Awards: Jane Abbott (Abbott Brown Architects Incorporated) and Peter Connor (Connor Architects and Planners Limited) who served on council as Secretary-Treasurer and Registrar respectively, and the members of our Website Task Force (Troy Scott, Judy Obersi, Laura Steele, James Marriott, Wendy Keen, and website-developer John deWolf of Form:Media). The NSAA was fortunate to benefit from all your dedication to the Association.

 
   

We are looking forward to next year's event and will begin planning shortly. The NSAA encourages any member who would like to become involved in the 2018 Spring Forum to contact Margo Dauphinee at mdauphinee@nsaa.ns.ca to express interest.

Spring Forum 2017

On behalf of the NSAA Council and Staff, we would like to thank the membership, our guest speakers/presenters, our volunteers, and our sponsors for making the 2017 AGM + Spring Forum a huge success. The 2017 Spring Forum and Annual General Meeting drew the largest crowd of any previous NSAA Annual General Meeting event, and we've some photos to prove it! The NSAA welcomed Ron Kronstein, anchor of Global Halifax's Evening News, as Master of Ceremonies for the 2017 Spring Forum. Global Halifax featured the 2017 Spring Forum and Halifax's Mayor Mike Savage's announcement of the Mayor's Prize in Architecture.

On behalf of the NSAA Membership, Council, and Staff, we would like to once again thank all Spring Forum 2017 Sponsors for their contribution to making the 2017 AGM + Spring Forum a success.

Doors Open 2017


For the second year, the NSAA participated in Doors Open Halifax held on June 3rd and 4th. This year, the NSAA partnered with the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic to showcase an exhibit called "The Halifax Explosion: Rising From the Ashes - The Role of the Architect". Images from the Nova Scotia Archives and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic collections were used along with photos taken by the NSAA of various areas affected by the explosion 100 years ago. Halifax Harbour - Tall Ship Silva


Marvin Windows Canada, 2017 AGM + Spring Forum Gold Sponsor, held itd Integrity Boat Tour aboard the Tall Ship Silva. Attendees were invited to a cruise through Halifax Harbour and enjoyed various refreshments and networking opportunities. Several NSAA members attended the beautiful sunny voyage. New NSAA Website: Under Development
Unveiled at the 2017 Spring Forum in May, the new NSAA website is currently being developed and finalized by the NSAA Website Task Force and our web developer, Form:Media. Over the next few months, the new website will be updated with all information and content. Stay tuned for the official roll-out announcement.

2016 Lieutenant Governor Design Awards in Architecture
New Schedule

Planning for the 2016 Awards is moving ahead. Notice of the registration period will be circulated to members shortly with the award recipient announcement slated for Architecture Week 2017 (the first week of October). Start thinking now about submissions for Nova Scotia's preeminent architectural awards! More information will be circulated to members as soon as it is available.

Nova Scotia Building Code Regulations (NS Reg 26/2017)

The revised Nova Scotia Building Code Regulations (NS Reg 26/2017), which was printed on March 17, 2017 in the Royal Gazette (click here), has adopted the 2015 editions of the National Building Code, National Plumbing Code and National Energy Code for Buildings. These changes came into effect on April 1, 2017. Read more.

Nova Scotia Builders' Lien Act

Changes have been made to the NS Builders' Lien Act and will come into effect on June 30, 2017. The final regulations will be available and published in the Royal Gazette. Click here for a backgrounder document created to summarize the amendments to the Act. The Construction Association of Nova Scotia has also put together a Question and Answer document on the changes that can be accessed here. The published Act will be shared with the membership once it has been released.

Canadian Standard Form of Contract for Architectural Services: Document Six (2017)

As announced by the RAIC | Architecture Canada, the 2017 edition of the Canadian Standard Form of Contract for Architectural Services (Document Six) is now available. This edition replaced the 2006 edition of Document Six. Read more...
