Hope You Didn't Miss: Game 1 of the Women's College World Series was nothing short of epic as Oklahoma prevailed over Florida in 17 innings, the longest championship game in history. Game 2 set for tonight at 8p on ESPN. (link, link)
Presbyterian Prez Staton announces UVa-Wise (DII) AD Sterling to the same post for the Blue Hose. Staton: "I am excited about Danny’s energy, enthusiasm, leadership, and the experience he brings to PC. He is exactly what we are looking for in our new athletics director." Sterling, who led Cavs for the past eight years, also previously served as Assoc. AD for Internal Operations at Big South peer Longwood. (link)
The Michigan State Board of Trustees expresses full confidence in FB HC Dantonio and AD Hollis following a closed meeting with the two yesterday. Board Chair Breslin: "While it is not the practice of the board to make a statement after a work session, given the rumors that have been swirling in the media over the weekend, we, the Board, state that President Simon, Athletic Director Hollis and Coach Dantonio have the full support of this board." (link); Less than an hour later, Ingham County prosecutors announced three FB student-athletes would be charged with sexual assault stemming from an alleged incident in January. The players are expected to be arraigned within the next few days. Prez Simon has also come out in support of Dantonio, whom she says has handled the situation "with the utmost integrity and swiftness." (link); Full 13-page report at the bottom of this link. (link)
After a week of advocating for Auburn to move the SEC East, AD Jacobs was apparently the subject of good-natured ribbing from the league's 13 other ADs, including South Carolina AD Tanner: "It was kind of funny we were giving Jay Jacobs a hard time that he's going to the East. But we are voting him into the Central." Vanderbilt boss Williams: "If (Auburn is) in the East, we'll play them more. Missouri is in the East now, so we play them more. It doesn't make any difference to me. I just like where I'm at, and hopefully they don't move us." Jacobs acknowledges that a move to the east would present several scheduling and logistical challenges, not the least of which would be the Iron Bowl with Alabama. He intends to keep advocating, but maintains that "wherever we land, we land. That may mean we end up staying in the West for the next 20 years. Whatever works out." (link)
Newly minted interim New Mexico AD Ruggiero tells KOAT in Albuquerque that having a new job entails the accompaniment of some nerves, but credits former AD Krebs for doing a good job. "I hope to continue a lot of what he's done and stabilize the department a little bit" amid all that has surrounded the program in recent weeks. Among her first priorities, Ruggiero cites discussions with coaches and staff, budgeting and student-athlete support. "I think one thing that [Krebs] did very, very well is academically, we improved leaps and bounds. At the end of the day, not all of these student-athletes [are] going to go on to play professionally. We need to ensure that they all have their degree because that's what's going to carry them for the rest of their lives." Ruggiero also calls MBB HC Weir a "great asset" and assures UNM fans that "this is my home, and you take care of your home. ... I love this place and I'll do whatever I can to help, whether it's the coaches, the students or anyone else." Full interview. (link)
The Task Force on Intercollegiate Athletics (TFIA), charged with evaluating the state of Cal Berkeley athletics, stops short of proposing draconian measures, up to and including the elimination of certain programs, but nevertheless paints a bleak picture of the department's current situation. Task force co-chair Powell: "The consensus is the current situation is unsustainable. Something significant needs to be done. But there was great variation in what that is." TFIA recommendations did include stricter budgetary oversight by campus administrators as well as an independent review of the department's financial controls. To that end, Chancellor Dirks, along with incoming Chancellor Christ, issued a response indicating that the chancellor's office would "immediately begin to assess options for such a review." As far as downsizing the number of programs, the TFIA concludes that even if Berkeley were to trim back to the NCAA minimum of 14, any savings would likely be offset, if not outpaced, by a potential $25M decrease in philanthropy. "Athletics is the 'front porch' to many donors, and any programmatic changes have the potential to significantly impact overall giving." Powell summarizes: "There needs to be a determination of what kind of athletic program the campus wants, and then a matching of resources." (link)
Mountain West league meetings continue through today in Santa Barbara & getting MBB back into the multi-bid NCAA Tourney mix is a key point of discussion after two years of one entrant. A replacement for the NCAA MBB selection committee for outgoing New Mexico boss Krebs is also on the docket. And, like virtually every other conference, TV/media deals are a key topic for the future, as MWC members currently receive roughly $1M annually in relationships that stretch out to 2019-20. (link)
More conference meetings review: The AAC's wrapped last week in Key Biscayne with Wichita State's integration & 'Power 6' branding efforts tops on the list. Commish Aresco uses "productive." MBB data expert Palm, Forward Progress' Shukie & Wasserman were all in the house for presentations. Houston Prez Khator & USF AD Harlan named chairs of their respective groups for two-year teams. (link); The Southern Conference was in Hilton Head, FB instant replay phase-in begins with all members needing to be fully up to speed by 2019. ETSU Prez Noland named chair. (link); Big South CEOs were also in Hilton Head (coincidence?) as the league goes with a 2-minute video to recap. Commish Kallander points to plans of further executing the league's strategic plan. (link); FAU FB HC Kiffin on C-USA meetings last month, "League meetings were a lot more friendly this last week. I did say that to [agent] Jimmy Sexton. 'This is not like the SEC.' Coaches actually sat close to each other. SEC room was like three times bigger because everybody had to be like 10 feet away from each other." (link)
A number of SEC FB coaches and administrators sound off on one of the sports topical debates: the size of support staffs. The overarching theme from those interviewed seems to be that what is needed is a focus on the responsibilities, not the staff size. Georgia HC Smart brings up the point that, with comparatively large rosters, FB may have one of the highest staff-to-player ratios among all college sports. "It’s hard to manage 130 guys when you’re talking about class, off-field, behavior issues, everything. Just support. We need the support that we have. Picking a number on that, I think that’s tough." Kentucky HC Stoops adds: "With player development and coaching on the field, we have limitations in what we can and cannot do. As long as those are being enforced, I think we can all live with it." Meanwhile, Big 12 Commish and NCAA Football Oversight Committee Chair Bowlsby indicates that a measure to limit staff sizes may be on the horizon. "We're seeing very large staff. We see non-coaching personnel doing coaching duties. It is one of our two priorities for the Football Oversight Committee for the coming year...looking at personnel and how personnel should be deployed." (link)
Penn State Board of Trustees Chair Lubert announces a $5M donation to the university, $1.75M of which will be earmarked for renovations to the Lasch Football Building. PSU in 2015 announced $12M in renovations to the Lasch Building, including upgraded signage, branding amenities, locker room upgrades and a nutrition bar, among other enhancements. Lubert: "Having served on the Board of Trustees for many years and now as chair, I am aware of the vast potential of Penn State's students, faculty and programs, and I know philanthropy can fuel their achievement. I'm fortunate that, in part because of my Penn State education, I can give back and help support the future of my alma mater and its graduates." (link)
This week's SportsBusiness Journal is full of interesting data & interesting reads on how pros around the sports industry think about & are leveraging data. SBJ's lead piece reviews TV viewership trends & aging fans who consume content via the tube. College FB's median age in 2016 was 52, up five years from 2000. College hoops also at 52, up eight since '00. Tons here & clearly a big deal given the shifting landscape. (link); A number of additional pieces dig in on how organizations are hiring talent & building teams to crunching numbers for fan base expansion, sales, social media & also for on-site experiential improvements. Excellent series. (linklink, linklink, link, link)

Wi-fi in the skies may be a roll of the dice, but Ohio State hopes to have much greater connectivity success as it announces plans to add WiFi to Ohio Stadium and the Schottenstein Center in time for the 2018 FB season. The project is expected to cost around $9.5M, including $4.5M in construction and $4.4M in the technology itself. AD Smith: "The benefits are immeasurable. It is a tall task and one that many programs across the country are working to achieve as well. We obviously want to be a leader in this area and provide our support base with the ultimate game day experience and we continue to explore avenues to do so." OSU will begin accepting bids for the project this month. (link)

A number of high-level hiring announcements yesterday, starting with Baylor AD Rhoades' selection of Phoenix Final Four Local Organizing Committee CEO Rogers as his new Deputy AD in Waco. Rogers, who previously served as AD at Xavier & Senior Assoc. AD/SWA at Arizona State, will have an oversight portfolio that includes strategic planning & initiatives, Title IX, inclusivity, gender equity & diversity, MBB & Women's Tennis sport administrator duties, student-athlete health & wellness, sports medicine, mental health services & more. (link)
Iowa AD Barta stays within the Big Ten to hire new Senior Assoc. AD Wilson, who will head west to Iowa City from Maryland where he's served as the Senior Assoc. AD/Chief Administrative Officer for the past four years. Wilson will have "general internal operations and sport supervision" on his plate with the Hawkeyes. Prior to his stint in College Park, Wilson spent five years at the NCAA as part of its enforcement unit. (link)
Temple AD Kraft also adds to his executive team with the appointment of former Cal Assoc. AD/Chief Development Officer Wang as the new Senior Assoc. AD/AVP for Development for the Owls. Kraft: "Jeremy has been successful at every stop in his career.  He is a native Philadelphian, has a passion for supporting student-athletes and his engaging style will make for a great fit within our department and with our donor base." Wang returns to the City of Brotherly Love after two years in Berkeley, prior to which he was on the Villanova staff for four years. (link)
Fordham AD Roach also leans on local ties to recruit new Assoc. AD for Marketing, Promotions & Tickets Lawson back to the New York City area after nearly five years on the West Coast at Loyola Marymount. Lawson was most recently Director of Marketing for the Lions & is a St. John's grad. All marketing & promotional elements, plus the ticket push & social media oversight will now flow through Lawson in the Bronx. (link)
Headlining HC news yesterday was Ohio State AD Smith's decision to make a MBB leadership change after a strong 13-year run by HC Matta. Smith: "Thad and I, at the end of the season, had a sit-down meeting and talked about the goals and objectives that I felt we needed and he felt we needed in order to get our program back to where he built it. During that conversation, it became apparent to me that we probably needed to facilitate a change. […] I felt confident after the season. Once Thad and I sat down we had a good plan going into the summer. Recruiting is a major part of that plan. We weren't winning the battles in recruiting that I thought we might to have a chance to win, as he did. As we started talking about that on Friday, which was three months or so after the meeting we had, just the flow of the conversation brought us to the reality. ‘Thad, maybe it is time to make the leadership change,’ and he agreed." Smith will launch a full national search. Link includes full presser transcript. (link)
More HC Notes: North Florida AD Moon has worked quickly in hiring a new Baseball HC as he selects current minor league manager & former UNF AC Parenton to lead the Ospreys. (link); Illinois State AD Lyons will have to hire a new Women's Volleyball boss as nine-year leader Myers exits. (link); Georgia Southern AD Kleinlein goes with Armstrong State (DII) Men's & Women's Tennis HC McCaffrey as the new Women's Tennis HC for the Eagles. McCaffrey went 91-6 in three seasons with the Pirates' WTEN team, 70-16 with the men. MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
North Carolina's SB Nation site Tar Heel Blog enumerates why UNC fans should "enter this summer thanking whatever celestial entity they pray to that Bubba Cunningham is still hanging around Chapel Hill." First, Tar Hell Blog cites how success during the '00s made UNC an attractive destination before the campus was beset by a number of highly publicized sagas. Despite that, Cunningham recruited FB HC Fedora, who has led UNC to an ACC title game and is the program's second winningest coach (by winning percentage) since 1953. In addition, UNC has won three combined national titles in M/WLAX and last year shattered the department's previous fundraising record by bringing in $62M. And then, of course, MBB is coming off two consecutive title games and is the defending national champion. "Cunningham's leadership deserves more recognition than it has received. His stability, loyalty, and vision throughout his tenure kept UNC afloat when many other programs would have faltered. Unprecedented fundraising, development and on-the-court/field successes have returned North Carolina to the forefront of college athletics."  (link)
Purdue AD Bobinski sits down with the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel and offers a snapshot of Boilermaker athletics. In general terms, Bobinski observes that "we have a lot of things in a good place, but we have lots of room to run. We have a tremendous opportunity to have terrific success in a lot of programs." Bobinski concedes that his September arrival was not ideal. "Seasons were underway. I didn't have a chance to do any of the preparations. It was like jumping on a train that was already moving." After just over a month into the job, Bobinski made the decision to let former FB HC Hazell go, which he explains: "My theory is you don't make that big of a decision early unless you really feel like you're in a crisis situation. ... I know the decision wasn't wrong. I know the timing wasn't ideal. ... In order to give the players and everybody around the program the best experience possible, we needed to make a change." Administratively, Bobinski doesn't foresee an instance where Prez Daniels or board members would pressure him into making a coaching change. "I don't think we'd ever be that far apart. They would never need to tell me that. We would have gotten there together. Not that it couldn't happen at other places, but not here," also doesn't want humility to become a handicap. More. (link)
The OVC will reportedly move to an 18-game hoops schedule for the 2017-18 season and beyond. Divisions will also be eliminated, although WPSD reports that "division principles" will still be incorporated into scheduling that will still include home-and-home games with former division rivals and two home-and-home series with other programs on a rotating basis. In addition, the move will guarantee another home game versus a DI opponent while eliminating the need to add two more non-conference tips. The OVC, which has been playing a 16-game schedule with two divisions since the 2010-11 season, is yet to make an official announcement. (link)
Two hundred and fifty-four faculty members at Wright State sent a letter to university administration expressing their frustration with the school's FY18 budget proposal, specifically calling the amount earmarked for athletics "disgraceful" and "absurd." As WSU faces $30M in cuts across the board, athletics is set to get a $1.6M increase. The letter, in part: "Putting athletics on a par with academics and thus before the needs of our students is disgraceful and a gross strategic blunder! It continues the misplaced priorities that have characterized WSU spending in recent years and, along with gross mismanagement, led to the present fiscal crisis." WSU Board of Trustees Vice Chairman Fecher said the reality would actually be a $200K decrease in spending for athletics, which has gone over budget in recent years. Fecher: "In a comparison of Wright State University athletics against similar schools, Wright State actually spends a fairly modest amount on athletics. My belief is that it was never appropriately budgeted. It was budgeted much too low just to make an overall budget work on paper." More, including talk about DI stability. (link)
Last week's SVG College Sports Summit brought some interesting nuggets, like those passed along by Instagram sports partnership's Yoder. Three goals for athletic departments: 1) Growing the brand; 2) Connecting with alumni; and, 3) Recruiting. Also, "Try different things and see what the feedback is. The idea of being transported into the phone is popular, so don’t let it feel too corporate. Listen to your audience." Mentions Michigan, Oregon & Stanford as positive examples. (link); Clemson Director of New & Creative Media Gantt was part of a panel, notes the importance of delivering interesting content the moment a Facebook user is notified of a live stream. More. (link)
Also Noticed: A new sleep study by Arizona academic Grander, "Student athletes with sleep difficulties were 151 percent more likely to use cigarettes, 36 percent more likely to drink alcohol, and 66 percent more likely to smoke marijuana." (link); Northwestern State is adding a new Dak video board at Turpin Stadium thanks to $900K in support from corporate sponsors to cover the cost. (link); Veteran sales leader Gale, most recently EVP at Sportsdigita, joins Leona Marketing Group, which "has already assisted a major Division I conference secure a multimedia rights agreement and is under contract with multiple institutions in renegotiating their multimedia rights agreement and properly structuring their external revenue units." (link); STRIVR says its focus is still sports after a deal to train Wal-Mart employees using VR. (link); Syracuse & Western Michigan, Houston & Washington State agree to FB game deals over the next couple of years. Same with North Texas & Houston. (linklink, link); NCAA EVP Luck, Ohio State AD Smith, Buffalo boss Greene, Northern Illinois AD Frazier, St. Francis (NY) AD Garcia & New Mexico State AD Moccia will all be involved with this year's Learfield Minority Academy later this month. (link); Apple announces plans to compete with Sonos with its new HomePod. (link); Facebook's mid-roll ads aren't producing stellar results yet. (link); Amazon Prime Video is coming to Apple TV. (link); For the umpteenth time, Netflix boss Hastings says live sports don't make sense for his company, "That is not a strategy that we think is smart for us since we believe we can earn more viewing and satisfaction from spending that money on movies and TV shows." (link)
