Report on the Green LIne March

MachsomWatch initiated and led the Green Line March, a protest activity marking 50 years of the Occupation and calling for its end. The march took place on two days under the general umbrella of the 50Out initiative and in cooperation with Givat Haviva on June 8 and with Neve Shalom on June 10. Jews, and Arabs, young and old, women and men participated in both events. It was very moving to see young people who do not know the Green Line, as it has been intentionally erased from maps and schoolbooks, come to the march in order to learn and to understand about it, but mainly to protest the continuation of the occupation.

We invite you to watch a video that we produced from the Green Line March at Givat Haviva.
The first march, which spanned about 7 kilometers, began at Mitzpe Ilan, on the Green Line and ended at Givat Haviva, in the afternoon of a very hot day. As the participants marched, MachsomWatch members marked the Green Line. Hundreds of people, including Member of Knesset Dov Hanin from Hadash, then filled the auditorium to hear speeches by former Knesset members Avrum Burg and Avshalom “Abu” Vilan, Ilan Sadeh, head of the Menashe Regional Council; Riad Kabha, head of the Jewish-Arab Center at Givat Haviva; and Yaniv Sagi, executive director of Givat Haviva, as well as members of neighboring Arab villages and a representative from the Palestinian Authority. Our member Nura Resh spoke on behalf of MachsomWatch followed by Gil Alexander, a representative of Oz Shalom. Musicians Jonathan Shapira and Zeev Tene also performed.

At Neve Shalom the march took place on Saturday. Several hundred participated in it and walked along the kilometer-and-a-half long route from Latrun to Neve Shalom. Here, too, MachsomWatch members led the participants and marked the path in green, to remind everybody of the intentionally forgotten and erased border (the ’49 armistice demarcation line) which existed here between Israel Jordan up to the Six-Day War. Participants carried signs of MachsomWatch and other organizations, calling for an end to the occupation.

After the march, over one thousand people filled the outdoor amphitheater at Neve Shalom, which overlooks Latrun and the Elah Valley. Among the speakers were Knesset member Ayman Odeh, Meretz party chairperson and Knesset member Zehava Galon, former PA minister of prisoner affairs Ashraf Arjami, translator and activist Orly Noy, and Haaretz journalist Gideon Levy. They were accompanied by amazing musical performances by the Arabic singer Amal Murkus, Tamer Nafar from the Palestinian rap group DAM, Jonathan Shapiro, DJ Ramzi and rappers from East Jerusalem, who protested the occupation in their performance.

The two events were well covered by the Israeli media and by other organizations.
Even though the events are over, MachsomWatch members plan to continue to raise awareness of the Green Line, together with our regular activities. We hope to distribute the short film about the march through social media, our website, and through our mailing list.

This is the opportunity also to thank each one of you who volunteered and who donated to cover the many expenses need to cover the march. We worked hard, but only with your help were we able to bring this important and impressive event together.
