Former Louisville MBB stand-out Smith, who helped lead the Cardinals to the 2013 National Championship, pens a long letter in connection to the NCAA penalties handed down last week. "Just so the fans of U of L and the people who follow basketball know, I strongly believe the truth will come out and I still have faith the NCAA will take a closer look at the situation at hand and not penalize any of my brothers or recruits or young men who were minors at the time because of deceitful adults who had separate intentions. [...] College is a place where things happen, where young adults open wrong doors and see things maybe they shouldn't see or meet people on campus who have no intentions of being a student on campus. [...] My brothers and I took photos with these women because they were friends of a friend. [...] The women were in our dorm because they were around the campus and the athletes and nothing more." Lots more from Smith. (link)
Multi-part profile of Seton Hall AD Lyons continues, this time with perspective on his relationship with former boss & current Rutgers AD Hobbs, who has become one of his closest friends, "My first year I was calling him all the time complaining like a typical AD who wants a shoulder to cry on. He would always say, 'Imagine how good you are going to feel down the road when it all comes to fruition and we're winning and the facilities are top-notch.' I'm thankful that we're at that point." Lyons says Hobbs was the trump card when he decided to make the move from Iona & believes great leaders like Hobbs can positively impact any company, no matter the industry. Bets Hobbs hasn't taken a night off for quite some time as he continues to push his vision for the Scarlet Knights. (link)
With the ACC Network's linear growth with ESPN set for April of 2019, the league wants all schools fully prepared a year in advance & Virginia Tech Director of Production & Broadcast Operations Walls calls it "a very daunting timeline." Per the Daily Press' Teel, Virginia, Florida State & Duke are "far ahead of pace" with the Cavs spending $6M to upgrade its capabilities. Despite the investment in top-notch equipment, the staffing piece of the equation continues to be challenge. Virginia Tech Senior Assoc. AD for Facilities & Operations Gabbard goes Inside Baseball on what comprises an effective production space. ESPN's Arends is the Worldwide Leader's liaison to the ACC, points to the ability to learn from those in the SEC to make the process slightly easier. More. (link)
Michigan: Wolverines FB HC Harbaugh reviews learning moments alongside former AD & new Ford CEO Hackett, including the swag transition to Nike. Harbaugh: "My instinct was, 'OK it is Nike — let's go.'" However, Hackett wanted deeper analysis & player surveys with "a room full of charts and interviews, and pros and cons, etc." Harbaugh: "It's another example of a process where I learned some things." (link); Harbaugh has apparently invited the Obamas to Ann Arbor to visit with his program, also considering the next European excursion to visit Paris, London & Normandy with possible practices in the first two. Neat read from ESPN's Rittenberg on Boerman Moving & Storage leader Pryor, who has helped a laundry list of ACs around the nation relocate from one city to another (and then another again). Pryor: "There's several things that are very stressful in life. Death is one of them. Right next to it is moving. The fear is: 'How am I going to get everything done? How do I know to trust the driver to pick up my stuff? How do I know the bill is going to be accurate?' Sometimes, you have to trust it's going to happen." Says "no two moves are alike," points to the time he helped move an AC family from Vegas to Syracuse, only to have the wife say she wanted to move right back. Pryor handled both ends. Fifty percent of Boerman's business comes from coaching relocation & the 73-year-old Pryor says every time he thinks about retiring he gets busy again. (link)

New William & Mary AD Huge continues to get her feet set, uses the term "blissfully exhausted" to decribe her current state. Some notable experts from an interview with the Daily Press' Johnson: "I don't know at this point if I've had enough time to determine what needs to be improved. But one thing I've been banging the drum on pretty steadily is that we don't brag on ourselves enough at William and Mary. […] We're pretty successful. We're very successful. And we're going to talk about winning. […] I can't wait for the day that it's just an AD, not a woman who's an AD. But I get it. I'm really proud of William and Mary, and we're making history together. I credit the search committee and the president and board of visitors who just looked and said, 'We're going to hire the best person.' I'm thankful it was me. (link)
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Batko reviews the ever-shifting TV landscape, gets comments from American Cable Association Prez & CEO Polka on the coming linear ACC Network, "Mark my words on how their projections are revised between now and the date they launch — if they launch — because I’ll tell you what, if this issue with ESPN snowballs, forget launching a new network like that." Pitt AD Lyke says her eye is on changing consumption behavior, but expects the linear piece to get going on time. Former NFL VP & current consultant Hawkins does not project the play to spin off "big money." (link)
Oklahoma State Prez Hargis says the recently completed contract extension for FB HC Gundy is advantageous for recruiting purposes & deserving given the Pokes success during Gundy's tenure in Stillwater. On the pair's relationship, "It's always been healthy. Any time you get into a negotiation, especially when you don't have all the money in the world – Oklahoma State is not one of the richest athletic programs around – you have challenges and you have to allocate the money best you can." Hargis also notes the need to raise more cash before a new Baseball facility can go up. (link)
More HC Notes: Texas A&M FB HC Sumlin, "When you’re in this job, you know what’s at stake all the time. Whether anybody has anything to say about it or not doesn’t change how I feel. I approach my job the same way. What I did the first day I got here to what I do now. I had a coach tell me don’t pay attention to a lot of stuff because you’ve never been that good and you’ve never been that bad." (link); New Baylor FB HC Rhule continues to shift the culture of the Bears program, "The recruits come here and visit and see our players and coaches and how they interact with each other, and I think they can tell this is a really healthy place. When I first got here, I wouldn’t have said that. It wasn’t a healthy situation. The kids were beaten up. A lot had happened. But in a few shorts months when people visit they can see this is a healthy culture that’s only going to get healthier." (link); UCLA AD Guerrero will hire a new Women's Water Polo HC as eight-year leader Brooks is stepping away. (link)
Old Dominion brass are adjusting some levers to continue selling FB season tix, will execute a week's worth of radio promotions starting tomorrow to move the final 2.5K in Foreman Field. The promotional price of packages will drop to the equivalent of participating radio stations dial locations, ranging from $92.90 to $100.50 against a rack rate of $199. Assoc. AD for Strategic Marketing & Revenue Generation Chandler is proud of the Monarchs' sellout streak, "but it doesn’t mean you can’t be a part of the program." (link)
Interesting piece from SBD's/SBJ's Kaplan that Development teams around the nation should give a look (though I assume vastly different taxation regulations apply). "The Los Angeles Rams received Internal Revenue Service approval to structure personal seat license fees as loans from fans, meaning the team would not have to pay taxes on the money but also that the seat buyers would be paid back. [...] It’s not hard to see why the Rams might take the PSL-as-loan approach. Say the club expected to raise $500 million in PSL proceeds. At a federal corporate rate of 35 percent, plus the steep rates in California, taxes would consume nearly half the amount."  (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
The Roanoke Times' Woody calls the hiring practices of Virginia Tech AD Babcock efficient & so far in Blacksburg, on the mark. Babcock's approach, "You can certainly have a wish list for coaches, but you better darn sure get that list down pretty quickly to who are the best coaches who will say yes to your job. So far we’ve had very good success in the one we want most also wants to be with us. […] We need to out-people people because we can’t outspend them all, nor can we buy our way out of poor decisions. But if money was the only factor, Texas and Ohio State would never lose in anything." (link)
Tribune Star journalist Golden points to a middling 2016-17 competitive campaign for Indiana State, but believes some HC changes & contract moves should help the Sycamores moving forward. In closing, "As mentioned above, Clinkscales' leadership and enthusiasm (embodied by the Elevate campaign) gives hope that ISU can put this dire season behind them and have a good future. The MVC is wide open in all sports. There's no reason ISU can't be one of the contenders." (link)
Former Kentucky AD & Alabama/Vanderbilt MBB HC Newton "still garners respect from coaches." Visiting SEC HCs commonly refer to & visit with Newton during their 48 hours in Tuscaloosa & Newton says, "It means a lot to me personally. I’m a coach at heart, and I (like) to see the other coaches." Newton's son, Martin, AD at Samford, "You want to be remembered and that’s why I think when you see these coaches come through and mention his name or say hello to him, it just makes him feel like that everything he did was worthwhile, and that the relationships that he developed and the people that he cared about recognized that." (link)
$2.6M: The amount Air Force invested with public relations firms & consultants following a series of cadet-athlete situations over the past couple of years. The Colorado Springs Gazette reviews emails between leaders on their approach to different issues of sensitivity & what AD Knowlton faced when he took over the Falcons department. The Gazette had been pushing for the email records for three years, slowed significantly by personnel & process logjams. More. (link)
Continuing coverage from the CWS: NCAA Managing Director of Championships Prettyman on potential pitch count regulations, "It is something that actually our sports science people at the NCAA are looking at, not in any position at this point to throw out any mandates or rule changes. We have would like to have the coaches buy into something if we did choose to go that route, but there’s nothing on the near horizon at this point." More, including comments from ABCA boss Keilitz. (link); Beer is served at TD Ameritrade Park, but some would like to see more Nebraska-based craft varieties on the main concourses. The volume difficulties of handing a one-off situation seems to be part of the challenge for Levy. (link)
Also Noticed: Michigan Assoc. AD for FB Minick exits Ann Arbor for a role back in the military. (link); Montana is ready to implement $625K worth of upgrades to its Softball facility. Permanent seating, a press box, plus bathroom & concession spaces. (link); Southern Miss Prez Bennet was voted in as chair of Conference USA's Board of Directors in recent league meetings in Destin.
