Interview with John Vallance- EA Jumping Chair
Q: As the Chair of the Equestrian Australian Showjumping Committee, how important are events such as the Thomas Foods International World Cup Show Jumping at the Aus3de?

A: The Thomas Foods World Cup jumping competition is one of twelve World Cup qualifying competitions conducted in Australia. The WC series is a worldwide competition which enables the top riders in each league to qualify for the World Final. They are competitions at the very top level of the jumping sport and are important for Australian riders to test themselves and their horse at the very top level. In addition to the focus on the World Cup final, this year the Thomas Foods World Cup qualifying competition is one of six competitions that the riders can gain a certificate of capability to be considered for selection to represent Australia at the 2018 Tryon World Equestrian Games. The 2017 Thomas Foods World Cup will also host the final leg of Equestrian Australia’s Triple Crown Series.

Q: What is your background and experience in the showjumping world?

A: Currently I am Chair of Equestrian Australia’s Jumping Committee. I am an FEI Level 4 Course Designer and Technical Delegate in Jumping. I have been a Course Designer for approximately 80 World Cup competitions over the last 25 years. I was also the Co-Course Designer for the jumping at the Sydney Olympic Games on on the Course Design Team at four Olympic Games and twice for the Youth Olympic Games. I have helped designed courses in Mexico, Singapore, Canada, UAE, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, China, New Zealand.

Q:How does the World Cup Showjumping differ from the eventing showjumping phase?

A: The WC jumping differs from the 3DE jumping phase by being higher, wider and more technical through the distance between obstacles and the construction of the obstacles. Both the WC and 3DE event jumping at Adelaide International 3DE are designed and built at the top level for each discipline.

Q:What makes the Aus3de Thomas Foods International World Cup Show Jumping unique?

A: The
MMAus3de Thomas Foods International World Cup Show Jumping is unique in that it is the only time in Australia we bring together athletes at the very top level of their disciplines. The atmosphere generated by having the top athletes in the superb setting of Adelaide is also unique as the arena is surrounded by an enthusiastic and informed crowd that places more pressure on the athletes. In addition to the importance of the World Cup, there is the added pressure of being part of the EA Triple Crown and the WEG qualifying opportunity.

Q: Can you tell us about the new ‘Futurity’ class at this year’s event?

A: The new competition for jumping at this year’s
MMAus3de, the futurity is a competition that brings together the top emerging horses in the sport. These are younger horses than those in the WC and it challenges them with a slightly more difficult course than the normal competitions they would compete in. The futurity is a window into the future of the sport with these horses likely to go on to represent Australia at future WC finals, WEG or Olympic Games.

Q: Why do you think this class will be one to watch?

A: The futurity is a window into the future of the sport with these horses likely to go on to represent Australia at future WC finals, WEG or Olympic Games.

Q: What can spectators and riders expect at the 2017 Aus3de for the Thomas Foods International World Cup Show Jumping & ‘Futurity’ Class?

A: As the Victoria Park venue for the Adelaide 3DE and TF WC competitions provides such a superb setting, great arena conditions, top prize money, and the opportunity to get to WEG or the WC final the competition will be challenging, intense, and exciting. As well, some riders will be looking two years down the track for  the Tokyo Olympics and will be using this event as a developmental stepping stone for the future.
