Eduard Anton scores his maiden win at the Red Bull Ring

Following two learning weekends at Misano (Italy) and Brands Hatch (United Kingdom), where Eduard Anton had showed his speed, everything went right at the third round, on a circuit where Formula 1, MotoGP and the DTM visit Austria each year.

Free practice took place on Friday, on a dry track. During both one-hour sessions, Eduard had no rival in the Am category, setting the class best time and the fifth overall time amongst the 31 cars entered. The Romanian racked up more than 200 kms on the first day, but things got a bit more complicated following overnight rain ahead of qualifying. In traffic, Anton placed himself seventh in Q1, but took his revenge a few minutes later by settling a new pole-position in Am class in Q2. Luckily, a technical glitch occurred only after his flying lap.

Once the top series in Germany (ADAC GT, TCR and Formula 4) helped the track to dry out quickly, conditions were perfect for the first GT4 race. And so was the car, repaired before the start. Eduard was lucky not to be collected in a melee in the first turn, light damage leaving him able to pursue his charge: by mid-race, he had gained 10 places on his lowly grid position. He then came in for his mandatory stop, rejoining the track on the provisional category podium. Eduard did one more overtake against a direct opponent to end second in Am, thus entering the overall top 10.

The second race brought Anton further up the grid and even one place higher after the start. He attempted to pass a higher-class KTM, then settled into his own rhythm, running as high as fourth overall. His main objective was a victory in Am class. That was never questioned during the 50 minutes of the race. This is the first victory for Romania in international GT4 racing.

Eduard stepped four times onto the podium in eight starts. Reaching mid-season, he is fourth in the Am class standings, having trimmed the deficit to the leaders following the successful pair of races at the Red Bull Ring.

Drivers standings (Am class): G.Ghezzi 93p, M.Mengozzi 78p, M.Gostner 78p, E.Anton 73p.
The next race will take place at the Slovakia Ring near Bratislava, on the 15-16th of July.
