NIA Feature Story
The Audacity to Restore:
A Woman's Story of Empathy, Justice and Healing

I opened the door and dropped the bag of ice cream onto the seat.  As I was retracting the key from the door lock I suddenly felt a hand around my mouth and my feet quickly came off the ground. In a matter of seconds everything went dark as something was tied around my eyes.

I could hear multiple voices, but at the time I couldn’t catch all of the details going on around me.  My hands and feet were bound.  I had no clue what could possibly be happening to me.  I felt myself being carried just a few feet and then thrown into the back of a truck.   Read more...
A Special Note

We chose to share this compelling and courageous story in as candid a way as possible so as to dramatize the power of empathy and restorative justice.  It’s the real-life experience of someone in our growing NIA family.  It is a very abbreviated testimony of a painfully extensive and complicated journey that we may hear more about in the future.  It made me draw from my own true experience of a violent attempted rape.

We hope it moves you to:
  1. Pass it along and share it with your social media tools,
  2. Work together to seal gaps and restore lives,
  3. Invest in an organization showing commitment to smart new ideas, and
  4. Never, ever give up.
NIA On the Move
We are continuing our work with the Georgia Justice Project and the Urban League of Greater Atlanta and other agencies as part of a special  Employment Working Group. The goal is to define strategies  “Beyond Ban the Box” hiring.

Our partnership with the  Southern Center for Human Rights and the Criminal Justice Reform Workgroup was formed to focus on state and local policy priorities and identify  key stakeholders that will continue the efforts of the Georgia Council on Criminal Justice Reform and Governor Deal. Read last year's report here.

On May  25th NIA Leadership joined Senator Brandon Beach’s “Heroin Task Force”  in Alpharetta.  This task force has taken on the challenge of strategically addressing the growth and deaths associated with addiction throughout Fulton County. Watch for updates from the NIA on this critical work.

Later that same day we were engaged with the next level of planning  of the Fulton County Ad Hoc Task Force on expungement and record restriction.

On June 8th we connected NIA issues with the Fulton DeKalb Hospital Authority regarding the “Red Alert” Summit this October. NIA is on the institution's committee.
