From the Desk of Fabian Howard - Deputy Head: Academics

FROM GOOD TO GREAT

“The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.” Bob Marley

As I reflect on education today, it has become increasingly evident that, today more than ever, we need to build good men of character. “Men rise up!” often has this plea been shouted out. The development of self-worth has become the centre of a person’s efficacy. So what character do we speak of? Good Christian character, which should be at the centre of a young boy’s core. One can now begin to see the significance of the role of schools in developing young men more than just academically. It is this character which needs to transcend the borders of the classroom. The holistic child is something to which we need to aspire. So as we try to define what education truly is, one has to actually ask the question; what is a good education? “Education is what survives when what has been learned is forgotten.”BF Skinner

One cannot negate the importance of good teachers because good teachers are the reason why ordinary students dream of doing extraordinary things. St David’s is certainly fortunate to have such teachers. But any good teacher needs an intent; a point of departure, something that can drawn on in the face of adversity. Morality, through the assimilation of the values espoused by St Marcellin Champagnat, is definitely the point of departure. This is where we should draw inspiration from. Our value proposition should be found in his desire “to make God known and loved” In the short time that I’ve been here, I have certainly established that this is the fabric of the school; and rightfully so!

As we attempt to educate our boys holistically, let us never lose sight of the “bigger picture”. An articulate young man used the following quote during the Champagnat Day Breakfast; “If you want to touch the past, touch a rock. If you want to touch the present, touch a flower. If you want to touch the future, touch a life.” Anonymous  This profound statement made me reflect on the enormous responsibility we have in ensuring that the values of St Marcellin Champagnat are actualized through our teaching.

CLIFTON RUGBY AND TENNIS TOUR

Last weekend saw the Prep school travel down to Clifton School in Durban for a tennis fixture on the Friday evening and a full rugby fixture on the Saturday. This was the first time the Prep school have tried a mass tour from under 9 to opens, and it involved long hours on the road and boys being hosted out by families from Clifton. We have always believed that this trip was about far more than just the sport fixture, but about the educational experience of our boys having to experience something out of their comfort zone. It was really fantastic to see all the boys thrive and step up and buy into the experience. As a school, we really appreciate the parents’ support and I would like to thank all the staff who gave up their time to make the tour such a success.

CHAMPAGNAT DAY FESTIVITIES
EXCHANGE STUDENTS
On the 1st July 2017, 3 young gentlemen from Welham Boys School in India arrived in South Africa to participate in the exchange programme with St David’s. These boys are: Prateek Tibrewal, Kanav Agarwal and Akshat Chamria. They were met by their hosts Matthew du Chene, Loatile Lebale and Reilly Preece.
This is the third year St David’s has participated in an exchange with Welham Boys School and our three boys will be hosted in their boarding hostel in November later this year.
The boys attend school daily with their hosts and have so far been to the Lion Park and joined the school on their tour to Durban against Clifton. They then stayed on in Durban for the weekend enjoying the beach and other sites that Durban has on offer.
During the Mid Term break they will also have the opportunity to enjoy the sites and experiences of Cape Town with their hosts, which the boys are looking forward to.
St David has 4 exchanges happening this year: In grade 9 – Spain and in grade 10 – India, Australia and Japan. Information on applying for these exchange programmes will be sent out near the end of the year or beginning of next year - Leigh Black

On Tuesday morning 30 May five Spanish Exchange students from Colegio Retamar in Madrid landed at OR Tambo International Airport. This moment finally arrived after weeks of communication and careful planning. Alvaro Ortiz Santamaria, Gonzalo Chiva, Gabriel Llorente, Pedro Villarino and Javier Cortina were warmly welcomed by Robert Laithwaite, Deyan Munsamy, Kade Kalell, Sebastiano Truda, Daniel Sabbagh and their families. It seemed and felt like a reunion of good old friends.
Currently it is the second exchange between St David’s Marist Inanda and Colegio Retamar. Robert, Deyan, Kade, Sebastiano and Daniel will be traveling to Madrid in October 2017 and spending four weeks attending Colegio Retamar and doing sightseeing.
The first exchange proved to be very successful where lifelong friendships were built. The St David’s boys on last year’s exchange matured and grew from the exposure to new cultural experiences.
The Spanish Exchange for 2018 will be launched in September this year. It will be open to current Grade 8 boys.  The boys at St David’s and Colegio Retamar will undergo a rigorous selection process and will be matched according to their interests. Combined Concert with Kingsmead  by Jaco Ferreira

On Monday evening St David’s hosted Kingsmead College for a combined concert that featured bands, marimba bands and choirs from both schools. The concert proved to be a testimony to the success of the music departments in the respective schools in virtually every conceivable way: with over 250 learners on stage that evening, participation was simply astounding; with about 300 friends and family in attendance, support from our school communities was incredibly positive; and with the high quality of each and every number presented at the event, it was very clear that both teachers and students alike are passionate musicians who pour their hearts into their particular skills. We would like to thank Elsabé Fourie (the Director of Music and Arts at Kingsmead) and all the other teachers at Kingsmead for their incredible input. Mr Chris Luke and Ciaran de Chaud also wowed the audience with incredible arrangements and great band performances. The Sound and Lighting team, under the direction of Ciaran de Chaud, also did a spectacular job to ensure that the show was great to listen to and beautiful to watch.

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST – CORPUS CHRISTI

Brethren:  The cup of blessing which we bless, is not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are  many are one body, for we all partake of the one  bread.  1 Cor 10:16-17
