SUNDAY JUNE 25
HOWL! ARTS IN THE PRIDE PARADE
One of our biggest JACKIE FACTORY Summer 2017 projects is co-producing the first-ever HOWL! ARTS float with JONATHAN BEE in this year's HERITAGE OF PRIDE PARADE on Sunday June 25. This marks the first Pride Parade for the busy HOWL! East Village Arts collective, the force behind HOWL! HAPPENING GALLERY on East 1st Street, the HOWL EMERGENCY LIFE PROJECT (EV wing of THE ACTOR'S FUND) and the HOWL! FESTIVAL in Tompkins Square Park, currently on hiatus.
The HOWL! float will spotlight the East Village as the cradle and home of LGBTQ cultural movements and icons including gay poet and inspirator ALLEN GINSBERG, JACK SMITH and the Warhol superstars, early queer theatre, punk icons like JAYNE COUNTY, the drag performance movement nurtured at LADY BUNNY's WIGSTOCK festivals and in clubs like PYRAMID and BOYBAR, the Ballhouse (Vogue) culture and beyond.
The float, produced by THE JACKIE FACTORY with JONATHAN BEE, will feature artists and icons from five decades as riders and marchers, set to DJ JOHNNY DYNELL's eclectic East Village soundtrack. The float will feature archival images of East Village culture and art work by SCOOTER LAFORGE. Riders will include AGOSTO MACHADO, BOBBIE ANCHONDO, BRIAN BUTTERICK AKA HATTIE HATHAWAY, CHI CHI VALENTI, CHRIS TANNER, CONNIE "GIRL" FLEMING, DIRTY MARTINI, GAIL THACKER, HEATHER LITTEER, JIMMY WEBB (TRASH & VAUDEVILLE), JOANIE MOOSSY, JOHN KELLY, JOHN WOOD, PAMELA SNEED, PAUL ALEXANDER, PHILLY ABE, POISON EVE, RIKI COLON, SALLEY MAY, THOMAS LANIGAN SCHMIDT, TONY STINKMETAL and more.
Though float space is very limited and we are stuffed to capacity, we invite you, our community of artists, performers, audience and neighbors to march with us. We will have a large "second line" contingent walking with the float, who are asked to wear either a HOWL T shirt (they will be provided) OR costuming from the East Village period they'd like to pay homage to (50's Beat, 60's Yippie or hippie, 70's Punk, 80s Pyramid Club/ Wigstock or LES Ballhouse, 90's Boybar, Blacklips, as a few examples.) We will have hand-held artwork as well for marchers and everyone who participates will receive a T shirt. If you'd like more information please write to Michelle Halabura at michelle@howlarts.org.
See you at the Parade!

FIRED UP!
Johnny Dynell Spins the Gay Nineties

House Music was born in Chicago in the mid Eighties and brought to NY by WAREHOUSE DJ FRANKIE KNUCKLES to LARRY LEVAN at the mythic PARADISE GARAGE. JOHNNY DYNELL, spinning Fridays and Saturdays at THE TUNNEL, helped introduce this new sound in 1986, and brought his own brand of it to the newborn JACKIE 60 four years later. Now he returns to this signature Dynell early Nineties soundtrack for a new monthly - FIRED UP! Johnny joins FRANKIE SHARP, ANA MANTRONIC and MICHEAL T on the revolving Friday roster at CLUB CUMMING, the new East Village nightspot from ALLEN CUMMING, DANIEL NARDICIO and DARREN DRYDEN. (Though it officially opens in September, the club is already in transition this Summer at the former EASTERN BLOC.) FIRED UP! opens Friday July 28 and continues the last Friday of every month. For a sample of this sound listen to Johnny's THAT JACKIE FEELING podcast on his Soundcloud Page.
