Principal's Message

The Parent Forum on the Future of Education held on Wednesday evening this week was well attended.  This conversation is sponsored by the Minister for Education, Ms. Yvette Berry and is particularly helpful in this year of ADHS School Review.
Student Forums for years 7 – 10 were also held in week five to hear student voices on what’s working well and how we can improve education experiences for them at our school.  In the coming weeks and months the Student Executive Group (SEG) will work with me to make some of the recommendations real.
Suggestions promoted by parents at the forum, and by staff and students in similar formats, will be considered in shaping the 2018 – 2020 ADHS Strategic Plan.

How can I get involved?

Parents will notice as they arrive at school for pick up or drop off, the presence of ICON on our premises.  They are contracted to complete the kitchen 2 upgrade.  This involves gutting the kitchen and refurbishing with new carpentry and a hospitality bay.  We are all excited about the opportunity that this provides, in terms of vocational certification through the operation of the school café that meets the needs of students and staff.
ADHS has been a BYOD school since late 2013.  Over 400 Chromebooks and laptops are available to students throughout the school day to access to support their learning program.  Considerable pressure is being placed on these resources when students do not bring their own device from home to school.  Parents are asked to encourage and remind students of the need to bring their devices to school every day

Parent Portal and Student organisation
As we move towards the end of semester, parents are reminded that there are two significant ways they can support students to complete and submit assessment in a timely fashion.  The ADHS Parent Portal allows parents to see the assessment and due dates for each subject and it is accessible also from the front page of our website.

Year 10 Road Ready
A reminder to all parents that in week 10, Monday 26th June – Wednesday 28th June, all year 10 students will complete the Road Ready pre-driver education program.  Normal classes will resume on Thursday 29th June.

Semester Reports & Award ceremonies

Please check the tab ‘End of Semester Award Ceremonies’ to find out when you are invited to attend ADHS and view the presentation of awards.

Staff are currently working through final assessments for most classes and are completing semester reports for all students.  These will be distributed to students on the second last day of term – Thursday 29th June.

We use a computerised system for the completion and collation of reports and it is not possible to generate a set of reports for one student in isolation to the rest.  Consequently reports are not available any earlier than our distribution point at the end of the day on 29th June.  If parents are intending to collect reports, they will be available from the Front Office after 3.15pm and during Friday 30th June.  Reports can be posted home if parents provide a stamped ($1.30) A4 size self-addressed envelope.

Pam Waugh is retiring at the end of this term after 28 years as Business Manager at Alfred Deakin High School.  Pam arrived at ADHS late in 1989 and during her time at our school Pam has worked closely with five principals:
John Keneally 1989 –1995
Peter Wheeler 1996-2001
Colleen Matheson 2002-2007
John Flett  2008 – 2010
Belinda Bartlett 2011

Pam has ensured that both the financial and facilities management of the school have been of the highest order during her tenure.  The ADHS community will miss Pam and wish her all the very best in the future.
