What do time and butter have in common?

They both fly! Time has been flying particularly fast for me as of late, hence the delay in the newsletter. There are plenty of things afoot in the Calm Scribe office, from writings to mentoring there's a lot to discuss, as well as a public appearance. Keep reading for more details and I hope your summer has been going great thus far!

News
Ottawa Small Press Book Fair

The Ottawa Small Press Book Fair is back again and I will once more be in attendance. As it is every year, the event is being held at the Jack Purcell Community Centre at 320 Jack Purcell Lane room 203, on Saturday June 24th from 12pm - 5 pm. I will be featuring The Great Outdoor Adventure of Tiny Teddy and The Big Deep, as well as premiering a limited edition box set of short stories. (This is a box set you won't want to miss.) Look for my table and pick up a free short story in honour of Canada's 150th. (Limited Quantities.)

Mentorships

I was recently contacted by an organization called Mentorly. They work to connect aspiring artists with already established mentors from all over the arts spectrum. From dance to theatre, drawing to writing, they have a mentor to help new artists and now, they have me as a mentor. I am a bronze level mentor and am available to be booked to help people in the literary arts. Look below for a link to their website and please, if you know anyone who may be interested, spread the word!

Box Set of Short Stories

As mentioned above, I will be featuring some short stories at the book fair this year. I will be giving away "Matchbook" copies of the "Lone(ly) Sentinel" as a free gift, while supplies last. I will also be introducing a new Small Press Book Fair limited edition box set of short stories. Each box set includes 5 "Matchbook" edition stories.

Please note, quantities are limited. If you are unable to attend the book fair and would like to purchase a box set, please email a request for more information to see if it will be possible to accommodate you. As always, thank you for your support.
The theme for this year's collection is, Emotion. Each story takes the reader on a brief, but strong ride. Pick up your Matchbook Edition at the book fair.
Projects On The Go

I am currently awaiting some concept sketches for Tiny Teddy and Violet and the King Prince. Teddy will be illustrated soon and the Violet story is running along nicely. Both are in a holding pattern for the time being.

Project Persyphious has been cooking in the back of my mind and I am ready to put pen to paper to finish the extra few chapters. Look for another test read opportunity to come in the next month or so.

The book of short stories is coming along nicely with the final stories being polished before being sent to my new editor. This book will haunt you.

I have recently joined Instagram! You can now follow me to see quotes, meditative photos, and to play along with #StoryCubeFridays. I am also working on a short story which will have an Instagram exclusive release! Look for "The Ferryman's Wife".
Recommendations of the month:

Mentorly: Mentorly.co
As stated above, Mentorly is a site dedicated to helping bring emerging artist to the people who can answer their questions. Aspiring artists can book an hour long mentoring session and work with an artist already established in their field. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back and to help the future generations of art flourish. If students are unable to afford sessions, they are able to apply for an InKind grant. Look for more details on this fabulous project by clicking the link.

Book Challenge 2017:

Each year I set a goal for how many books I will read. Last year I did not hit my goal, yet this year I am already deep into my challenge. In 2017 my goal is to read 26 books. I have found a fun list which makes this goal easier to attain. Each book is a challenge, for example, a book you can read in a day or a book with over 500 pages. So far I am into my third book and will keep track of them here so they may serve as suggestions. Follow me on Litsy or Goodreads to read my reviews of each book.

2 of 26: A previously banned book.
The Catcher in the Rye- J.D. Salinger

3 of 26: A book with over 500 pages.
501 Must-Know Speeches

4 of 26: A book you read in school.
Of Mice and Men- John Steinbeck

5 of 26: A book that will improve a specific area of your life.

Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite- Paul Arden

6 of 26: A book written by someone who is not a writer.
Rest in Power - Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin

Tip of the month: Watch the unseen.

Each day we are surrounded by a flurry of activity we don't notice. It is easy to get caught up in the "bigger" things in life and miss the finer details. Here is an experiment you can try on your own, a mindfulness practice which will force you to slow down.

Sit outside, somewhere comfortable, and get yourself settled. Rest in an easy position, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. When you open your eyes, look around and see what is there, then zoom in, keep doing this until you have seen all there is to see or all you wish to see. Keep your breath calm while you do this and try to involve the different layers of scent and sound as well. I will give an example from my backyard. "I look around and see the dogs playing, the grass, the fence, the trees, the garden, the patio stones. {zoom-in} I can see there is a bunny hiding in the long grass, a sparrow is dancing through the garden, and squirrels are playing on the fence. {zoom-in} If I look just right, I can see a swarm of gnats buzzing in the air. I can see the ants on the paving stones frenzied because their home was attacked."

We are constantly surrounded by stories everyday. All we need do is pause and pay attention.

Did you know...
  • Your bookstore has a local authors section?
  • Your city probably has poetry readings and other literary events you can attend?
  • The first name ever recorded is considered to be, 'Kushim', an accountant who had signed a receipt for multiple shipments of barely?

Don't forget, your local library can be a great resource. When was the last time you visited?

That is it for this month's newsletter, thank you for your continued support.
