These Days
One of Brisbane’s finest exports, Powderfinger, wrote this song for the masterfully entertaining 1999 movie Two Hands, a drama about dodgy dealings and disorganised crime, set in Sydney.
The movie starred Bryan Brown and Rose Byrne, made a name for Heath Ledger, and was written and directed by Gregor Jordan, who, a decade earlier, was a young tape operator at Sydney’s Channel 10 when I worked there as a (young!) copywriter.

It’s a beautiful and powerful song, was #1 in Triple J’s 1999 hottest 100 and Song of the Year at the 2000 Music Critic’s Awards. Lead singer Bernard Fanning performed an acoustic version at a benefit for those affected by the 2002 Bali Bombings and the band played it at a commemoration service for Heath Ledger in 2008.

It would work in the slightly easier C, but doing the E and D chords with the fingering shown in the songsheet diagrams makes the changes smooth and relatively painless, and it means you can play along with the band. Bernard Fanning’s range is quite high, so mezzo to alto women and tenor men should be able to sing it without too much difficulty. The chorus and oohhs are great for harmonies.

There are cheers and tears in this clip of Powderfinger performing These Days as the last song at their last ever show, Brisbane 2010.
Powderfinger - These Days (final ever performance)
It's a bit of an anthem.
