GOOD NEWS FOR CORAL

Coral Restoration Foundation is saving coral reefs 🐠

Based in Florida, they operate the largest reef restoration program. With six offshore Coral Nurseries in South Florida housing over 50,000 corals at a time, the foundation uses innovative techniques to grow threatened coral species, which are later outplant on to reefs. Clusters of corals are outplanted strategically to increase the amount of genetic diversity for these once dominant coral species. Read more about this project, here.

Why are corals important to fight against climate change? Because they provide a buffer, protecting our coasts from waves, storms, and floods. Corals form barriers to protect the shoreline from waves and storms. Yes, coral reefs are extremely necessary.

INSPIRATION

Are floating cities the future? 🏝

Apparently, artificial islands could provide new homes to Pacific Islanders. The Seasteading Institute is building politically independent cities that float on the ocean.

Joe Quirk, the founder, believes that man-made islands will someday be home to independent communities where people can experiment with new forms of government and launch innovative businesses. He says these islands may also have value for places threatened by sea-level rise.

There is still widespread skepticism about the feasibility of Seasteading, let alone its ability to provide an affordable solution for people displaced by rising sea levels. But projects like this remind us that there are ground-breaking ideas waiting to be explored.

Asians countries make plastic oceans promise at United Nations  👏

China, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines said they would work to keep plastics out of the seas, this week at the United Nations Oceans Summit, in New York City.

Some of the promises are not yet formalized and environmentalists say the measures proposed are not nearly urgent enough. But UN officials praised the statement. Read everything that happened at the United Nations, here

Daughter's asthma inspires mom to act on climate ❤️

Almost 12 percent of adults in Maine, United States, have asthma compared to a national average of nine percent.

Charity West lives in Maine and has a background in environmental science. She always had an understanding of airborne particulates, but last year when her seven-year-old daughter, Lila, developed asthma, it suddenly hit home. That prompted her to get involved. She began speaking to her elected officials about climate change, air quality, and health. She says no matter where you live, knowledge is the best weapon in the fight for clean air.
