1.Question Interview Below: Jon Oliver // Executive Associate Athletic Director // Virginia
Catching back up with Washington State AD Moos, who touched on a number of key topics with the Seattle Times. Calls the five-year roll-over deal for FB HC Leach a "no-brainer," notes a commitment to upping FB's AC salary pool, which he did $160K more divided among staff, says the total is the 10th largest in the Pac-12. Likes the squad WBB HC Daugherty is bringing back after a WNIT Semifinal exit, believes MBB HC Kent made some solid AC changes. $1M more to go for the new $9.5M Baseball clubhouse, after which full fundraising attention will shift to an indoor FB practice. Also, on the Pac-12 Networks, "What we need to do is broaden the distribution, and certainly DirecTV and a couple others would help us there. But we’ve gotta continue to keep our fingers crossed." SI's Thamel & McCann take a legal look at a defamation complaint filed by Oxford-based retailer Rebel Rags against Mississippi State FB student-athletes Lewis & Jones, as well as the step-father of former Rebel Tunsil, in relation to their testimony in the on-going NCAA situation. The latest notice of allegations from the NCAA alleges Rebel Rags handed out $2,800 worth of free apparel to Lewis & Jones doing their recruiting visits to Ole Miss. "The lawsuit reflects the existential risk posed by the NCAA’s notice of allegations for Rebel Rags as a business. The store’s entire business model—selling officially licensed Ole Miss paraphernalia and merchandise—is imperiled by allegations that the store aided Ole Miss in breaking NCAA rules. […] Much of Rebel Rags’s lawsuit centers on how the NCAA obtained information from Lewis. More specifically, the lawsuit contends that Lewis embellished and that the NCAA facilitated that embellishment in order to burnish the case against Ole Miss. Along those lines, it is expected that Rebel Rags will argue that neither Ole Miss nor any third party implicated by Lewis’s allegations had a credible opportunity to cross-examine him." More. (link)
SEC Country's Kersey goes behind the thumbs of Arkansas AD Long, whose Twitter posts often generate a good chuckle or brow-raise. Long, who has 116K Twitter followers (nearly double his closest league counterpart, in Florida AD Stricklin, 58.9K): "We do surveys and things, but on Twitter, you can learn what people are thinking in real time. I think it’s important for ADs to connect. ... To me, Twitter is also a stress reliever. I get on there and get a little funny, I might throw a little quip. Nothing I’ve done is meant to be harmful or degrading. I might throw a little something out there at somebody if they’ve attacked me on something. That’s just a little bit of fun. I hope that people know there’s nothing but a little-lighthearted fun in those tweets." Razorbacks Senior Assoc. AD for External Freet, who says Long's natural humor comes through via his tweets: "Generally, the public relations rule of thumb is to not engage with an angry fan because there’s usually nothing to gain there. I’m not sure Jeff’s skill there is teachable. I don’t know any other ADs in college athletics who have that ability." (link)
Recently graduated UNLV WBB student-athletes Dakota and Dylan Gonzalez chose to forego their final season of eligibility to pursue a career in music. The twins tried to balance their love of the game and music, but, per Dylan: "At the end of the day, the only thing [the NCAA] would allow us to do was sing the national anthem at a game and make music in our home. It just became this fight as to why we wouldn’t do anything outside of basketball without all of these ticky-tack regulations coming into play. It just became so stressful." They want to continue their basketball careers overseas, rather than the WNBA, but for now will focus on "familiarizing ourselves with creating a sound for ourselves." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
In this Harvard Business Review piece, author and IE Business School (Madrid) Professor Mayo answers "If Humble People Make the Best Leaders, Why Do We Fall for Charismatic Narcissists?" Some background: "Humble leaders improve the performance of a company in the long run because they create more collaborative environments. They have a balanced view of themselves – both their virtues and shortcomings – and a strong appreciation of others’ strengths and contributions, while being open to new ideas and feedback. These 'unsung heroes' help their believers to build their self-esteem, go beyond their expectations, and create a community that channels individual efforts into an organized group that works for the good of the collective." But, "charismatic people are more likely to become endorsed as leaders because of their high energy, unconventional behavior, and heroic deeds. ... despite being perceived as arrogant, narcissistic individuals radiate 'an image of a prototypically effective leader.' Narcissistic leaders know how to draw attention toward themselves. They enjoy the visibility. It takes time for people to see that these early signals of competence are not later realized, and that a leader’s narcissism reduces the exchange of information among team members and often negatively affects group performance." Mayo's explanation, "Our psychological states can also bias our perceptions of charismatic leaders. High levels of anxiety make us hungry for charisma. As a result, crises increase not only the search for charismatic leaders, but also our tendency to perceive charisma in the leaders we already follow." (link)

Nebraska FB will reportedly spend nearly $1.2M on recruiting for FY17, which is a 45% increase over the $806K for FY16. The sharp jump comes as a result of HC Riley’s focus on changing the way the Huskers recruit on a national scale. Although the majority of the money is spent on travel, Huskers CFO Jentz says the program is using the additional funds to concentrate on other facets of recruiting, including different digital ventures: "It’s more than just creating a budget that can have private planes, it’s getting creative with the dollars you use, as well. It’s more than nuts and bolts of travel expenses, it’s making ourselves stand out." (link)
The Buffalo News' Gleason takes a really deep dive into the final season of Buffalo baseball, with a focus on the reactions and viewpoints of various affected parties. HC Torgalski: "I wasn't one to go in and complain to the AD every year with 'I need this, and I need this.' It was, 'Give me what you can, and we'll make the best of it.' We might come up short based on the lack of certain things, but we were always going to compete. That was the reputation we developed. […] After having invested 17 years, it's hard to see it go. "My kids grew up in UB baseball. It has been a part of our lives for a long, long time. It has been tough. It's hard when you feel like you're taking small steps every year to raise that talent level, but you never had that opportunity to compete at the highest level year in and year out because of the lack of commitment from the school." Lots more, including the decisions by UB student-athletes to move on to new institutions & programs. (link)
The Casper Star-Tribune Foster breaks down how wins and losses impact revenue opportunities for FB programs and conferences by analyzing how the outcomes of last season affected the Mountain West Conference, specifically Wyoming, Boise State and San Diego State. Ultimately, the piece closes by concluding that "winning begets winning," as wins attract better recruits, who theoretically win more games, which brings in more money. (link); The real value of this piece is this chart, which details Wyoming's eight MWC games last year & the key TV financial variables involved in each, including two different $500K payouts for playing on ESPN2. (link
A $55M to $60M FB ops facility was given the go-ahead by the Virginia Board of Visitors, granting HC Mendenhall's year-and-a-half-old wish: "A football building is absolutely necessary to dedicate or to show our dedication that we’re serious. A facility is a tangible form of announcing our presence that we don’t intend to be taking a backseat to anybody." The News & Advance's Ratcliffe draws attention to the opening of the McCue Center in 1991 and how it ushered in a golden age for the program under former HC Welsh. (link); Writing in the Daily Progress, Ratcliffe also gives a brief rundown, including cost and open date, of all FB ops centers in the ACC. (link)
HC Notes: Tennessee AD Currie says he & FB HC Jones have had no conversations about an extension for the Vols' gridiron boss. (link); Meanwhile, UT MBB HC Barnes says a series with in-state foe Memphis is "going to happen." (link); FanRag's Carroll runs through the culture change instilled in Durham by Duke FB HC Cutcliffe, recounts where the program was 10 years ago & notes the support of facility upgrades. "The greatest challenge — creating a healthy culture — is complete. The next step is sustained success." (link)
Another interesting data piece on AthleticDirectorU in partnership with Spencer Fane, this time on "Autonomy 5" WBB contracts with stand-alone metrics & comparative figures to MBB leaders. The ACC tops the list for average WBB HC compensation at $759,831, the Pac-12's $427,651 is at the other end. Interestingly, "35 schools pay their head football coach more than the head coaches of its men’s and women’s basketball teams combined." Both Florida State & Colorado leaders rank in the Top 5 within the cohort on the percentage of available bonus monies against total compensation figures. Georgia WBB boss Taylor tops the category at 148%. More, including a side-by-side analysis of APR bonuses that look to be more lucrative on the Men's side, as well as cost per win calculations with Mississippi State the most efficient last season ($13,676 per win). (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Per Law360: "Former football players for the University of Tulsa hit the school, Conference USA and the NCAA with a proposed class action Thursday in Texas federal court, accusing the trio of letting them suffer repeated traumatic head injuries without proper medical care despite understanding the serious long-term..." (link); More legal news at Baylor as the university pushes back on requests to turn over more documents from the Pepper Hamilton investigation. At odds is exactly when the institution & law firm established attorney-client privilege. Defendants say the move was made during the investigation, BU positions it from the start. (link)
The Herald-Dispatch's Landon goes in on the success Western Kentucky has achieved since entering Conference USA with a budget ($30.2M) that's only the league's seventh largest. The Hilltoppers have topped C-USA in total annual championships every year it's been a member. WKU has also prevailed regularly in its rivalry with Marshall, other than in MBB, Baseball & Softball. Landon says the Toppers don't have clear advantages in facilities, budget, enrollment or location, but continue to win across the board. (link)
ESPN MBB analyst Spatola inks for the new outlet created by former Sports Illustrated head-liner Davis, "Seth's Draft House," on the economic impact of the one-and-done rule. Spatola: "The inherent flaw in the conversation about the NBA’s one-and-done rule is that it is too often viewed through a philosophical, bordering on paternal, prism, when it should be viewed, instead, through an economic one. […] it seems the only ones who aren’t allowed to make capitalist decisions in this rampaging capitalist market are the college players; not to mention the “system” has been set up as one gigantic false choice — go to school for a year, even if school is not for you, but don’t stay in school too long because that stigma decreases your draft value." (link)
The NCAA Rules Committee issued an extensive survey this month to FB coaches from DIDII, and DIII asking for their input on the ineligible man downfield rule. The hope is to get some agreement on a rule that offensive coaches view one way, while defensive coaches view another. SEC Coordinator of Football Officials Shaw, who is soon to be the NCAA’s secretary-rules editor: "It’s like a Republican-Democrat thing. If you’re defensive minded, you want it 1 yard. If you’re offensive-minded, you want it 3 yards. ... We are going to see where the coaches come down on it, and then the rules committee will take it up. It’s on the rules committee’s mind. I’m very interested to see what our coaches have to say across the board. Then we will have some data points and figure out where to go." (link)
Around Higher Ed: Nevada Prez Johnson gets a contract extension through mid-2020. Base salary $423,686. (link); Florida will hire 500 new faculty "to continue to be one of the very best research universities in the nation." Prez Fuchs: "UF ranks among the top 10 public research universities and we have our eye on being among the top five." (link); The Charlotte Observer's Gordon writes on the increasing number of males on college campuses who are filing (and winning) lawsuits against the universities - and even the females involved - in cases of alleged sexual misconduct. A handful of situations in North Carolina paint the evolving picture. (link)
Also Noticed: Oregon completed its first-ever Triple Crown on Saturday: Cross Country National Championship, Indoor Track crown & Outdoor Track title all in the same year. (link); Could Rugby be the next high-growth program addition for athletic departments? The scene at the Collegiate Rugby Championships in Philly last week drew some large crowds. (link); BlueFlame announces its new Team1Sports play, free to all for one year, designed for schools & conferences to cleanly deliver video content to OTT platforms. (link); Through four games, TV ratings for the NBA Finals are at their highest marks since 1998. (link)
Corrected link from yesterday: DawgNation's Emerson with a piece on the SEC's positioning in connection to ESPN & what the future may hold. Includes leadership comments from SEC meetings. Arkansas AD Long notes how his 22-year old daughter doesn't have cable, but "she has to have her sports" & utilizes streaming options on multiple devices. Florida boss Stricklin furthers Long's point, "Keep in mind that when people do, so to speak, cut the cord, they may go to another outlet where they still get sports. But we’re still included in that and we’re still included at the same rate. You’re always concerned about growth in anything that you’re doing. But we’re comfortable that we’re still in great position." Commish Sankey indicates the league is "attentive to what's going on in the cable universe." (link)
Hiring & onboard new head coaches & their staffs will inevitably be a topic of conversation this week in Orlando. Here's how Virginia Executive Assoc. AD Oliver handled the process in Charlottesville when the Cavs added former BYU FB HC Mendenhall in advance of the 2016 season. Some interesting take-aways: The four consecutive days of morning meetings Medenhall held with the 50 or so staffers within the department who touch the FB program to get everyone quickly on the same page, "we all believe here that the organization wins." Also, "there's a detailed plan of where he wants to go & I think it's important for people to hear that from day one." Listen to today's 1.Q by clicking the link. (link) (length - 6:17)
