Hillary Outdoors Internship Hillary Outdoors Tongariro have had a last minute cancellation for their internship programme, so an exciting opportunity has become available for a person seeking industry experience. The ideal candidate would be someone who has a range of outdoor skills, such as those provided by a polytechnic course, but lacks industry experience to gain meaningful employment. The internship programme runs for six months and commences on 3 July 2017.

Freelance Instructors | First Step Outdoors, a small adventure operator on Mount Pirongia, are looking for freelance staff for their upcoming summer season starting in November 2017. Their range of activities include climbing/abseiling, caving, kayaking, zip line & archery.

Messages from the Office

TRoQ Alpine and Avalanche Consultation

Skills Active are seeking feedback on the newly developed programme, unit standards and programme guidance and conditions documentation for the NZ Certificate in Alpine (Level 5 and 6) and Avalanche (Level 5).  NZOIA has been involved in the development of these and has an agreement with Skills Active to align to the new Alpine qualifications, so it is important that you have your say as an individual.  If you would like to summarise your thoughts to NZOIA then please send feedback directly to Ben Corcoran at ben@mountainexploration.co.nz.

NZOIA will be using some of the Unit Standards from the New Zealand Certificate in Avalanche Risk Management (Level 5) as a limited credit programme which will take the place of the MSC Back Country Avalanche Risk Management (BARM) which is a pre-requisite to Alpine 1.  So again it is important you look at this material and provide feedback to Skills Active.

If you would like to summarise your thoughts to NZOIA then please send feedback directly to Ben Corcoran at ben@mountainexploration.co.nz.  Ben is running a review of the Alpine qualifications whilst engaging in the TRoQ process.  Consultation closes 5 pm Monday 26 June 2017

Outdoor Industry Advisory Group

The recruitment and retention of skilled staff is a significant issue for most operators within the Outdoors sector throughout the country. With burgeoning tourist numbers, this is getting more challenging.

Skills Active are setting up an industry advisory group for the outdoor sector to help address this. This group will help advise Skills Active and the outdoor sector in general on training pathways and how to attract and retain staff. Our sector needs to work harder to get and keep the people we need but workable strategies aren't always obvious or clear. If you are interested in developing these strategies send an expression of interest to Matt Cowie at Skills Active by the end of today.

FAQ

Q: Whats the difference between Revalidation and Registration?

A: Outdoor leaders, instructors and guides who hold NZOIA qualifications are required to follow NZOIA’s revalidation and registration process to keep their qualifications valid and skills and knowledge up to date.

Revalidation is the process by which qualification holders are evaluated by NZOIA assessors on a three-yearly basis to see whether they are up to date and able to lead, guide or instruct at the current standard of accepted good practice.

Registration is recognition of individuals’ valid qualifications by listing them and the expiry date on the NZOIA Registration Database and issuing a registration card. This is a publicly accessible database that lists outdoor leaders, instructors and guides and their current qualifications. Registration is completed as part of the annual membership renewal process.
