Kia Ora, and welcome to our newsletter.

What is happening currently in our education system? There has been a major focus on improving outcomes for children. We have had several participants from the school sector on our person-centred training courses. This month I want to share some information on how schools can make signification changes within budget constraints. This video shows the impact that using one-page profiles has had on schools in the UK.

Starting Community Circles in New Zealand

Enabling Good Lives and Community Circles
The Mid Central region has been chosen to start the implementation of a transformed disability support system in New Zealand.  The new design is being created to support the Enabling Good Lives principles and vision, which at its heart has eight key principles.  Gatherings have been happening over the past couple of months to co-create the new support system. Community Circles support people to live well in their community and they embrace the principles of the EGL approach:
Self-determination-Community Circles are formed to enable each person to achieve the goals/outcomes that they have identified as important to them.
Beginning early-Community Circles can be useful for supporting parents to explore new opportunities for their son or daughter, drawing on the wider community as resources.
Person-centred-Community Circles uses person-centred practices to support the circle to develop and review actions to achieve the purpose of the circle.
Ordinary life Outcomes-Community Circles make a difference for people across the whole range of everyday life outcomes.
Mainstream-first- Community Circles are all about gathering natural supports around the person, using circle members networks to achieve their goal.
Mana enhancing-Community Circles recognize the skills and expertise of disabled people and their families to determine their own future and support them through careful listening, understanding and respecting culture.
Easy to use-Community Circles are simple to operate, with the person/family deciding how they work and meet.
Relationship building-Relationships are what Community Circles are all about. The circle brings together important people in the person’s life and helps build relationships and connections.
“Circles bring us together to think and plan in a way that organically builds community around people who are isolated, or who need support because of health, disability or circumstance.”

Training update
Marie and Deborah have now delivered 7 Person-centred Thinking workshops, here is some of the feedback:
  • informative, relevant, excellent practical examples
  • the tools are great & will enhance & improve what I am doing
  • I will use these tools with students, staff that I manage and my Dad (85 years young)!

Participants who enroll in the workshops also receive an eLearning licence to complete Person-Centred Thinking for Everyone through HSA online.

We are now working with Careerforce to match the learning outcomes to the Health and Wellbeing Qualifications. This will enable people using the person-centred thinking tools to gain qualifications. We will keep you informed as we progress this work.
