Israeli and Palestinian Laureates Reflect on the 50th Anniversary of Occupation

Fifty years after the start of the occupation, the space for civil society in both Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories is shrinking fast, according to 2010 Right Livelihood Award Laureate Ran Goldstein from Physicians for Human Rights – Israel. Speaking at a seminar in the Swedish Parliament library in April, Goldstein voiced his concern about the growing pressures faced by activists on both sides in upholding basic human rights – from access to healthcare to freedom of expression. Narmada Dam Struggle Enters its Final Stage
The government of Gujarat in India recently obtained permission to close the gates of the Sardar Sarovar Dam, which would result in the flooding of the Narmada Valley. With this announcement, the 30-year struggle of the 1991 Laureate Medha Paktar and her Narmada Bachao Andolan movement against the dam enters a critical stage. In June, Medha Patkar and other activists held a "Rally for the Valley", which received considerable support from the local population and beyond despite violent crackdown on the protesters by the authorities.
