Narmada Dam Struggle Enters its Final Stage |
|
The government of Gujarat in India recently obtained permission to close the gates of the Sardar Sarovar Dam, which would result in the flooding of the Narmada Valley. With this announcement, the 30-year struggle of the 1991 Laureate Medha Paktar and her Narmada Bachao Andolan movement against the dam enters a critical stage. In June, Medha Patkar and other activists held a "Rally for the Valley", which received considerable support from the local population and beyond despite violent crackdown on the protesters by the authorities.
