American Folk Families:
Old-time Folk Music and Dance For Families
2017 Fall Series
In this fun series for the whole family, we learn about American Old-Time Music and dance in the form of “play parties” in which songs, dances and rhythm and rhyme games are “caught not taught”. Over the course of eight Saturdays, Families will learn to sing dance and play together with the music of Stephen Foster, The Carter Family, Bob Wills and other historically significant early American folk music and dance artists.
From the mysterious European ballads and African rhythms of the Appalachians to the fun cowboy songs of the great American West, families will learn to provide their own music for dances and games by “singing the tunes” and using their feet and bodies as percussive instruments. Old-time flatfoot dance, simple circle and square dances and the occasional waltz will be visited when the occasion arises.
I've been caring for children of all ages for over 30 years. It is my experience that playtime is where our children’s most important lessons are learned. My hope is that through these organized “play-parties”, families can remember that music is not just something we listen to on media devices or watch other people perform on television. Rather, it is something we can all participate in making and enjoying together as a community. And maybe we will learn a little something about American history in the process!
