I'm Writing A Book!

I'm taking the summer to write a book which is a project that has long been a dream of mine. It is so great to be able to take some time off and give all of my attention and energy to it. The book will be a companion to my instructional DVD, "Becky's Barnyard Buckdance", featuring biographies and fun facts about historically significant Appalachian percussive dancers, many of whom I talk about in my teaching.  The book will feature artwork from local folk artists and will hopefully be something you might like to see on a coffee table!

While I won't be teaching much this summer, but I'll be working hard to be ready for all the events we'll be jumping back into in the fall.

Come out to the Muckenthaler.

July 27th from 7:30 to 9:30 I'll be performing at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center with Molly White and Steve Werner.

Coming This Fall
Walker Creek Music Camp
Sept 28 - Oct 1, 2017

This camp is for people who like traditional American music: largely bluegrass and oldtime, also often including swing, Celtic, Cajun, and country. All ages are welcome, and core classes are offered in instrumental skills, jamming and band dynamics, and vocals. There are classes for beginners as well as intermediate levels.

We also offer a special class for younger children who are not yet ready for the full camp program, but would enjoy spending the morning playing music, singing, dancing, and taking breaks for arts and crafts, nature walks etc.

46th Annual Old-Time Fiddlers' Convention & Festival at Rancho La Patera & Stow House on
Sunday, October 8, 2017
The music festival features all day entertainment, one of the premier Old-Time Music contests on the West Coast, free workshops taught by some of the best teachers in the industry, opportunities to “jam” with other musicians, family friendly fun and much more.

The goal of the festival is to share and preserve Old-Time Music, an important part of our country’s rich heritage and encourage a new generation to embrace music. Music education opportunities such as free instrument workshops and led jam sessions will be hosted throughout the day. Children can even visit an Instrument Petting Zoo!

American Folk Families:
Old-time Folk Music and Dance For Families
2017 Fall Series

In this fun series for the whole family, we learn about American Old-Time Music and dance in the form of “play parties” in which songs, dances and rhythm and rhyme games are “caught not taught”. Over the course of eight Saturdays, Families will learn to sing dance and play together with the music of Stephen Foster, The Carter Family, Bob Wills and other historically significant early American folk music and dance artists.

From the mysterious European ballads and African rhythms of the Appalachians to the fun cowboy songs of the great American West, families will learn to provide their own music for dances and games by “singing the tunes” and using their feet and bodies as percussive instruments.  Old-time flatfoot dance, simple circle and square dances and the occasional waltz will be visited when the occasion arises.

I've been caring for children of all ages for over 30 years. It is my experience that playtime is where our children’s most important lessons are learned. My hope is that through these organized “play-parties”, families can remember that music is not just something we listen to on media devices or watch other people perform on television. Rather, it is something we can all participate in making and enjoying together as a community. And maybe we will learn a little something about American history in the process!
