Making A Real Difference:
The Personal Impact of Community-Based Services

Not so long ago, people with developmental disabilities were largely confined to state institutions. They were isolated from society, subjected to secret abuse and neglect, and didn’t live very long. Much has changed for the better for people with developmental disabilities in California following the passage of the Lanterman Act in 1977 - state legislation that created a right to independent living with dignity and community-based care. Today, thanks to community-based support services provided by Greater Opportunities and other organizations, the life expectancy of individuals with developmental disabilities nearly approaches the life expectancy of the general population.

Recently, we celebrated birthdays for several of our oldest, young-at-heart seniors. Charitable support will help ensure that more people like Isabel, June, and Barbara have an opportunity for a long, healthy, happy and active life filled with dignity and independence.

Tell Your Medicaid Story

For many adults with developmental disabilities, Medicaid is their health insurance. It pays for care from doctors, specialists, and hospitals, as well as prescriptions.

Your Congressional Representatives and Senators need to know the impact Medicaid has on people’s lives. They know that Medicaid provides health coverage but may not realize all the other things Medicaid does, like funding In-Home Support Services (IHSS), Supported Living Services (SLS), Independent Living Services (ILS), and Day Program services.

Please tell us your Medicaid Story and we will make sure it gets told to those who need to hear it.
