GCCCF Helps Provide Screenings to the Under Insured

Since 2015, GCCCF has partnered with Project Access through the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society to help bring colon cancer screenings to underinsured individuals in Hamilton County. By providing bowel preps for the screening procedures, GCCCF was able to contribute to the performance of over 30 colonoscopies for people who otherwise would have no access to such screenings. Eleven physicians in the Chattanooga area contributed their time and hard work to complete these procedures, including GCCCF Chair Shauna Lorenzo-Rivero, MD. Of those screened, 16 people were found to have polyps, and one person actually had Stage 3 Colon Cancer. This person credits this screening program for saving their life.

Project Access is a place where low-income, uninsured individuals with  medical issues can come for help. These individuals may not qualify for Medicaid or similiar programs and can not afford health insurance.  "Donated or low-cost health services remain the only option for uninsured, low-income residents who don't qualify for TennCare," said Rae Bond, Medical Foundation executive director, in the Foundation's 2016 Annual Report to the Community. 2017 Southeast MoParty Picnic a Success!!

MoPar cars and fans from all over the South gathered in Chattanooga on May 12th and 13th for the 2nd annual MoParty Picnic to help raise money and awareness for colon cancer. Event organizer, Ken Meredith, originally created the MoParty Picnic in honor of his brother, Rick Meredith, who passed away from colon cancer in 2016. "Colon cancer is a serious disease, and it takes people with big hearts to help support the people who are working on the cure," said Meredith.

Some rain resulted in the cancellation of the scheduled drag races, but the Coker Tire Cool Car Cruise was held. Coker Tire provided MoPar enthusiasts with lunch and a tour through one of the South's most amazing car museums. On Saturday, there were an estimated 281 Mopars on display at Camp Jordan, along with MoPar clubs and vendors. GCCCF had a booth and passed out waters on what turned out to be a hot, but beautiful day. Of course, the giant colon was on display and was a hit with event attendees.

"The Meredith family would like to thank each person who volunteered and the sponsors who gave financially and spiritually, as well as all the MoPar fans who always support the MoParty," said Meredith. "Next year's event is already in the planning stage!"
