Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin - one of the sites Canon Britt has visited on her vacation.
Dear friends,
Without a doubt you have noticed Canon Britt is on vacation until July 7th. Perhaps you’ve been wondering how St. Luke’s operates without our beloved, skilled and hard working Vicar.
In part we have Britt herself to thank for our ability to keep on keeping on in her absence. You may never have thought about how much time and attention to detail it takes to plan the liturgy for each Sunday service. When she’s in town, she meets each week with her Worship Team and then works with Niki, our Office Manager, to produce the bulletin that carries us through the service. She did that same thoughtful preparation for all three services she’ll miss and arranged for the priests who will lead us in worship. She also handed pastoral care responsibilities to Deacon Phyllis and Sara Bates, property responsibilities to Brother Isaac, and scheduling of Sunday contributors and upcoming events to Kate. Then she gave special instructions to Andrew about projects to complete in her absence. Britt also has us in her daily prayers, as we have her in ours.
Meanwhile, we thank Niki for running the office, handling the day-to-day challenges that come with St. Luke’s, helping organize the many projects that are going on and putting together a newsletter without her backup and major support. We are grateful for her good cheer and competence. Thanks also to Sara, Brother Isaac, Andrew and Phyllis for shouldering a bit more than their usual load to carry us through. And thanks for Ivar, whose music lifts our worship and spirits every week. We’re blessed to have each of our staff throughout the year.
Your Bishop’s Committee handled some things by email instead of a meeting. Edible Hope is still feeding people hearty, tasty meals. Lots of you have stepped up your own ministries, as you have so often. We miss Britt, but it’s good to notice the church is more than just one person.
So thanks to Canon Britt for being our Vicar, and thanks to each and every one of you for keeping St. Luke’s a warm and welcoming place that loves God and all of our neighbors.
With faith, hope and love,
Barbara Wilson
Senior Warden

Thank you to Windermere!
Maybe you noticed a big difference in St. Luke’s appearance last Sunday, though you couldn’t have easily seen all the changes. Our friends from the Ballard office of Windermere Real Estate showed up with about 60 people for a morning of seriously hard work. They power washed sidewalks, removed curling siding, replaced rotted railings on the portable decks, cleaned and straightened areas used by Edible Hope that some of you may never even have seen, hauled away several truck loads of reusables and trash, fixed the water-stained ceiling in the narthex (think entry to Bennett Hall), mowed lawns, weeded gardens, pruned bushes, painted the interior walls of the tower in the Original Church, washed windows, reattached gutters and many other amazing things.
This is the third year in a row we have been blessed by their help. We are so grateful to be the recipients of their community workday. They’ve made a big difference for us. If you know someone from Windermere, let them know they made a major impact and say thanks on behalf of St. Luke’s.

How St. Luke’s spends your contributions
A lot of decade-old deferred maintenance and building and grounds upgrades are getting accomplished this year with your help. Heat pumps have replaced antiquated baseboard heating in the Undercroft (where Edible Hope feeds people) and Britt and Niki’s offices. Sidewalk was replaced. New siding is going up on the north side of Bennett Hall. Trim painting spruces up Bennett Hall and the Original Church. New major appliances make Edible Hope work better, with more energy efficiency to boot. Soon a Rainwise system will be installed to collect water from our roofs that can be used for two new rain gardens and for watering plants.
Many of the biggest projects are supported by grants, City of Seattle water and energy rebates, the generosity of the people of the Diocese of Olympia, and friends of St. Luke’s ranging from Rotary to individuals who care about our mission. Those extra funds help us do some big things. Since his arrival as our Building and Grounds Manager, Andrew performs many repairs that used to take large chunks out of our budget. Expectations of lower water, sewer and electrical bills led us to invest in ourselves. St. Luke’s sets aside some money in its budget for building repairs and improvements. Our funds have been required to some extent in most of these projects, but we would not be making such dramatic progress without those extra sources of dedicated money.
So thank you for your help in making St. Luke’s more beautiful, efficient, and better-prepared for the long term. You make a difference for us.
