Sad News

It is with great regret that we learnt of the death of Simon Hall, club member for ten years.  His family have asked us to publish the details of his funeral and invite members to join them at the service and afterwards at Papercourt. This link gives all the details:

The Weed - latest news
The weed growth this year is probably the most prolific we have seen in over 4 years but our great team of weedcutters are keeping well on top of it.  Both the left and right banks are pretty much clear and the team are working on the isolated clumps left.  So much weed was cropped last week it took a huge gang of Saturday youth parents over 4 hours to clear - great work,  thank you and no need for the gym membership! (see picture below)

As you probably know our status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and EU legislation prevents us using chemicals in out lake so, for us, weed cropping is the way forward. We have trained 5 new cutters since the last newsletter and if you would like to join the gang get in touch with Frank at
frankbrown1@ntlworld.com

With all the active cutting this results in quite a bit of free floating weed.  We have equipped a number of safety boats with rakes so if you do find free floating weed please recover it and land on shore, this should stop it finding a centre board.

When the Navy came to Papercourt

The RNVR Yacht Club came to Papercourt for a Dinghy Sailing Day. 35 participants enjoyed our hospitality, and found out how real sailors do it! The RNVR would like to thank all at Papercourt who made this possible especially those who helped out on the day.

A New Class at Papercourt - The Scow has arrived

The Scow has now been adopted as an approved class at Papercourt, has its handicap number and is ready for racing.

The class has been established and will now be included in the race schedules at Papercourt.

It is likely that there will be a fleet of at least six boats by the end of the year.

There are many variants of the Scow - but most of the differences are superficial and at Papercourt they will all be racing to the same handicap. The ‘core’ fleet is the Chichester Scow - but other Scows will be permitted in the Papercourt fleet to allow for second-hand purchases.

The 11-foot Scow with a lug rig was originally designed in the late 19th century as a tender, but subsequently developed as a stable dinghy and keenly raced in its many formats.

For Papercourt it will start life as a natural progression for ageing Solo sailors but It can also sport a jib and would be ideal as a parent/child starter boat.

We are also hoping to have a mid-week slot at Papercourt for those who are able to make it.

Please contact me if you have any interest in joining the fleet.

James Carleton (james.carleton1@btinternet.com) Scow Captain

And Congratulations to a different sort of Class
This picture shows our Adult Spring Course students and some of their many instructors.  Everyone achieved an RYA Level One or Level Two Certificate despite surviving the windiest ten week course in the history of Papercourt - Well Done to everyone, look out for them on the water and give them a thumbs up.
START TO RACE - Next Saturday - 1st July

Open to all club members age 16 plus, who sail at RYA Level 2 standard. This is a one morning course, introducing you to how racing works at Papercourt.  Different types of races, the flags, the countdown, how to start, how to round the buoys and maybe a smattering of rules as well.
If you would like to take part, please contact Tom Key on tom_key@hotmail.com as soon as possible.  Club boats are available to hire, or use your own.  This course will only run if there are sufficient participants, so please please let Tom know if you want to come, and also if you need to hire a Club boat.

Summer Sailing at Papercourt

1. Wednesday Evenings - Cruising on the lake from 6.30pm with the bar open and the barbeque available, this is a popular time for everyone to hone their skills without the pressure of racing. (see picture below)

2. Saturday Mornings - Pre-booked Youth Training,  Adult Spring Course, and room for cruising as well.  N.B. it is very busy.

3. Saturday Afternoon - Pursuit Race at 13.30 and GH race not before 15.15 all welcome - the Pursuit race is busy but starts by class, the GH everyone starts together but generally fewer boats on the water.   Cruising also possible, but keeping off the race course as far as possible.

4. Sunday- Pursuit at 10.45 and GH races not before 13.15 and 15.00  As above Pursuit is busier but staggered starts, GH races all start together but less busy.   Cruising also possible, but keeping clear of the races.

Other evenings, sailing is organised by either Ladies Sailing (see below), Training, or individual class captains (eg Solos on Thursdays) so please talk to your class Captain if you want to organise something.  The classes provide their own Safety Boat cover for this.
The Summer Course

There is now a waiting list for places on the ever popular Summer Course. If you would like to be added to the list, please contact Tom Key on tom_key@hotmail.com  as soon as possible.

Calling All Ladies
Monday 10th July from 6.30pm

Come on Ladies, forget the office, let the family get their own supper, throw responsibilities to the wind for one evening, and come and enjoy an evening of sailing and socialising.  All abilities are welcome and some of our lovely instructors will be on hand to help if needed.  Sail your own boat, or use one of the Club boats, but get out on the water, and then
celebrate in the bar afterwards.  The barbeque will also be lit if you want to bring along a burger or two.  If you need any more information please contact jane-hayden@outlook.com
The Pursuit Start Sequence

With the arrival of the Scow and one or two other previously unseen at Papercourt Boats, and the Topper 4.2 rig, the Pursuit Start Sequence has undergone a few changes recently.   Make sure you check your start number either on the list displayed to the right of the Course Board at the club, or on the website here: http://www.papercourt-sc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/PRONOTES-2017-June-vers-3.pdf
