Crowdfunding Highlight: Smart Buckle - Convert Any Watch into a Fitness Tracker

Kickstarter

Smart Buckle takes a very interesting approach to wearable tech. Why compromise on your personal style and preferences with typical wearables? Smart Buckle attaches to traditional watch straps and converts any timepiece into a smartwatch, including brands like Tag Heuer, Cartier and Rolex. The tiny buckle tracks steps, pace, distance, calories burned and sleep patterns. With a $39 price and delivery this August, the Smart Buckle seems like a steal.

Fitbit will hit NBA Courts Next Season, But Not on Players' Wrists [VIDEO]

Mashable

Fitbit and the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves have signed a deal to make the wearable maker just the seventh jersey patch sponsor in the NBA, as the league experiments with a brand new advertising opportunity. It's the first time a wearable company has paired with an NBA team, giving the association its first official experience with fitness tracking. The three-year deal means more than just put a patch on some game uniforms, though. The players won't wear the fitness trackers on the court but will be able to use the activity trackers, along with insight from the team's training staff, to amp up their recovery regimens between matchups. Everyday employees within the Timberwolves organization will be encouraged to start using the wearables, too.

From there, the wearables market will nearly double before reaching a total of 240.1 million units shipped in 2021, resulting in a five-year CAGR of 18.2%. Engineers Build Bendy Batteries for Wearables [AUDIO]

Scientific American

The flat lithium ion batteries that power smartwatches are built by stacking the battery components: positive and negative electrodes, current collectors and a separator. It's akin to piling up sheets of paper—you get a stack that you can bend or roll—but you can't stretch it. But now researchers have designed what could be a much friendlier battery for wearables. One that's bendy and stretchy, instead of a little brick. Listen on for more.
