Message from the Board
Thank you for your continued support of GBW! Your contributions enable GBW to help those in the greater Bedford area who have fallen on unanticipated challenging times. Because of your ongoing and crucial support to our organization, GBW continues to be able to meet the needs of those in crisis. It is our hope this newsletter gives you an updated and meaningful view of the ways in which every dollar raised makes an impact in the lives of others!

What We've Been Doing
By the Numbers:
The first half of 2017 was quite busy with requests! We had 34 requests for financial assistance between January and June, up from 15 requests in 2016 during the same six month period! GBW voted to fund 29, or 85%, of the requests for a total amount of $9277.94 distributed. Fifty-three percent (53%) of these grants supported people in need of housing and medical assistance. During this same period of time, GBW raised $7447.56. It's clear to see that our validators are turning to GBW at a greater rate than ever, and we are happy to be able to meet their need. These numbers also magnify the significance of your contributions: the need is everpresent, and our ability to meet it relies on fundraising support.
Validator Numbers Increasing:
To help meet the needs of those in crisis, social service counselors often reach out to GBW to become validators for their clients. At inception in fall 2013, GBW worked with seven validating organizations; today, we have 22 validators, about 50% of whom apply for support repeatedly. We are delighted that the social service communitiy can rely on GBW to meet the needs of those experiencing crisis.
A View Inside a Request for Support:
GBW's ability to provide support to those in need relies on the mutually trusting relationship it has with its validators. To support this relationship, GBW strives to make the validator application for financial assistance as unencumbering as possible yet still provide GBW with enough information to make a responsible funding determination. Organizations turn to us for support when funding is not readily available elsewhere, and GBW is proud to be able to meet the need in such cases, demonstrating we are having an important impact on the lives of others. Be as specific as possible. : Patient had surgery on Achilles heel Dec 15, 2016 and was out of work for 6 weeks with no income during that time. Since being back at work, patient has been required to attend physical therapy for her heel 3 times a week. Each week this costs patient $60 per visit which comes to $180 per week. Patient has not been able to keep up with all of her household bills due to these circumstances. Patient has high deductible and co pays with insurance through employer.

Expanding the Board
GBW is pleased to announce that we are growing and are actively looking to add new Board members. We are also interested in developing relationships with supporters living in neighboring communities in the hope they might be interested in launching another Womenade to meet the need for crisis funding there. Occasion Fundraising and You!
Looking to help GBW but not quite ready for a Board commitment? Then occasion fundraising may be what you are looking for! GBW gets requests for all amounts of support: some requests are for a $30 bus pass so a person can get to and from medical appointments, while others' needs reach our $500.00 limit. No amount of money raised is too small, and your support of GBW can help so many!
Please consider hosting a gathering of friends to benefit GBW--keep it intimate or go big! Excuses for gatherings are limitless: a BBQ, a swimming party, a neighborhood block party, a girls' night in, a binge-watching fest, a special birthday celebration, a wine sampling, a game night, a sports playoff game, or a good old-fashioned pot lock or dinner party. In addition to having a fabulously fun gathering, you can also make a huge difference in the lives of others. GBW is always here to help you plan your gathering. We'd be delighted to hear from you!
