Blocking Out "Noise" Leads To Working Happy

Noise: a sound, especially one that is loud or unpleasant or that causes disturbance.

You have enough to deal with in your work without “noise” causing a disturbance for you. What is noise when it comes to Working Happy? Noise can be unnecessary interference by others, baseless criticism of your work, game playing, distractions, the inefficiency of others whose work you depend on or anything that wastes your time. Noise makes it harder to do your work and is better off gone. Sometimes, you can’t get rid of noise and have to live with it. In that case, you can find ways to minimize the effect it has on your ability to do your work.

Noise takes away your focus. It does not add to your productivity or the quality of your work. Here are some ways to minimize the effects of noise on your work:
  • Get rid of any noise that you can, without harming your career.
  • If others are interfering somehow with your work, find a way to minimize your interaction with them. Decide what you have the freedom to do and do it. If they must be involved, deal with them only when you have to.
  • If noise is just noise and you are allowing it to distract you, sharpen your ability to focus and block it out.
  • If others are playing games, observe and be aware of what is going on, but don’t engage.
  • If something or someone is wasting your time, make suggestions for doing things more efficiently. Be constructive, rather than critical.
The last thing you need is more to do in your work. Noise takes a toll on your time and efficiency, if you let it.  Eliminate or minimize the noise that you encounter and you’ll be Working Happy!

What's Up For You?

We love answering your questions on your journey to working happy!

Q: Sometimes I just want to throw it all in, quit my job and run away. I dream of wonderful things I can do. I want to be happy and lately I find myself just wanting to escape my work life, no matter what it brings. Does being “practical” mean I just have to grin and bear it and make the best of where I am?

A: I don’t think you have to grin and bear it. The whole premise of this newsletter is that you CAN work happy. In this case, it most likely will take some planning and courage. You may just want to “bolt” and if so, fine. That choice gets you out of where you are. However, bolting can catapult you into the unknown and the results can be challenging. I suggest you take some time to identify exactly what is making you feel the way you do. What aspects of your job don’t work for you? What possibilities are open to you? Then, having a sense of what you want, you can move forward.
In my ebook, Power Stories: Mythical Tales of Personal Power At Work, I wrote a story titled Joni’s Forest. In the story, Joni just wants to get away from everything and escape to the forest where she has a cabin.  Joni finds out that she does not have to be bound by the things that constrain her or have to escape her whole existence. You may enjoy the story and find something for you. Good luck! I honor your desire to live a fulfilling life!
