On Friday, June 16th, 2017, Director Julius Halas of the State Fire Marshal's office visited the University of Miami's medical campus to learn more about the progress the Firefighter Cancer Initiative (FCI) has made in it's second year. Attending the event were FCI investigators, team members from the State Fire Marshal's office, project collaborators, elected officials, and University of Miami Health System and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center leadership.

The event highlighted FCI progress made over the last year, plans for the upcoming year, and some of the collaborators that help make this work possible, including Firefighters Attacking the Cancer Epidemic, Florida Firefighters Safety and Health Collaborative, and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network. Thanks to the support of Florida firefighters, in the past year the FCI team was able to successfully conduct surveys, cancer screenings, test gear and work environments, continue the development of the exposure application and launch new projects such as the AERIAL study, Guardrails Wellness Program, and the Tumor Bank. The event celebrated the collaborative work completed in the initiative's second year and set the stage for a successful third year.
