Update from India                     June 2017
Ann Peck, Executive Director, reports back after 5 months on-site in India.
A Dynamic Duo

Selvam is a full time smokeless stove installer in the rural villages surrounding Kodaikanal, southern India, supported by your donations to Kids Health India, our new nonprofit (2016). Photographed here with his daughter Leyah, Selvam is well aware of the health risks for children living in toxic smoke daily from cooking.

His wife, Sheela, is a trained nurse working full time in local schools monitoring the health of 150 children from the lowest economic sectors of Kodaikanal for the Betsy Elizabeth Trust. Selvam and Sheela have two young children who graduated from Grace Kids Center preschool, where the whole family learned about smokeless stoves first hand.

Both Selvam and Sheela share a heartfelt commitment to improving the health of needy families in their local communities, a dynamic team for social change!
The Demolition Boys

Students Develop a Global Perspective

Students from the Geneva International School of Switzerland visited us in India in March, 2017. Four boys wielding 5 pound hammers smash an old smoke-spewing stove to make way for a new one, which will serve 143 children in a rural school. Their comments with each swing of the hammer: “this feels good!”

Neighborhood children watching the installation are delighted to join the “big boy” team in moving special fire bricks for their new stove. Santiago takes a breather from the demolition dust.
Local masons measure the three new stove “burners” with the jumbo aluminum pots that will be used to cook for the children. See the stove pipes going up the back of the wall.

There they are, the most important part, the chimneys and cowls waiting to be installed on top of the roof.
Project 2 - Demolition Boys

In the afternoon we all piled into a vehicle and started down a perilous ravine to visit a remote village where we had been asked to assess the possibility of installing stoves. “I took these enthusiastic students into an impossible situation, where the house structures were so incredibly demolished already that we could not install there without serious renovation. I wanted to see how they would react and if their ideas would spark a future project."  Ann Peck
Santiago, one of the demolition team, shares his photos and comments from the remote village visit:  “This is the condition of the houses that we visited in the tribal village. There are a lot more children . . .  I think around 25 with 11 babies breathing in the unforgiving smoke.”
Your Donations at Work
Peek inside. The hammock is a comfortable swinging bed for a sleeping child. Babies are often hung in these hammocks near an unventilated stove to keep warm, making it a lethal slumber. Our goal at Kids Health India is to get the toxic smoke out of the house so infants can breathe cleaner air.
New stove for the family.
Twin hammocks.
The Rajendren family receives a new stove, improving health for 4 children, including the new twins. It is a common custom in village homes to make a hammock out of a sari to hang the baby for cozy sleeping quarters. Twin hammocks increase the sleeping space for the bed below that sleeps four:  2 adults and 2 children.

A Big Thank You to Our Donors!

In our March newsletter we asked for your donations for a printer/scanner/copier to help produce written educational materials for key players on our ground team. We received the donation and have purchased the item in India.

We also received the requested donation for a simple smart phone with GPS capability to track our stove installations. A phone has been purchased in India and is currently being used to record village sites.
