Sports TV scheduling expert Sarzyniak looks at the glut of 'Group of 5' rights that may end up on the market all at the same time as the AAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt & Army all have deals expiring after the 2019-20 campaign. Prior to 19-20, Conference USA, BYU & the West Coast Conference will be at the table. Sarzyniak expects ESPN to try to retain as many rights as possible, notes the value of Thursday & Friday night games for the Worldwide Leader, points to CBS Sports Network as a "gray area with respect to how much programming space they truly have to offer a conference if they want to be the primary rightsholder." There's also the possibility of the leagues doing multiple deals & slicing up inventory more strategically. More. (link)
Yesterday was officially new Boston College AD Jarmond's first day on the job & TMGSports' Blaudschun pens on the challenges ahead. "It takes effort, patience and time to get anything moving at The Heights. There are pot holes in the highway that Jarmond is now traveling that he has no idea even exist." Decisions on FB & MBB leadership may be on the horizon, plus, "Jarmond must also do something–anything–to increase a fan base which has shrunk steadily over the past several years." Ultimately, Blaudschun says it's easy to raise money at Ohio State, Jarmond's previous home, but much harder to do so at BC. However, "there are signs of life at The Heights and that is very much a good thing." (link)
Since her official start on June 1, UNLV AD Reed-Francois has literally lived on campus, taking up residence in Tonopah North dormitory, where despite having to reacquaint herself with coin-operated laundry machines she says the five-minute commute has been "invaluable." She adds: "When I first set out to do this I wanted to be a part of campus and get to know our student-athletes and get to know my campus colleagues, so what better way to do that than live in a dorm? It’s been a great experience. ... And I wanted to send a message that our athletic department is going to be humble and work really hard and we're a part of this vibrant campus." On becoming the first female AD to replace a female AD, Reed-Francois says she feels a responsibility to do the best job she can and help ensure that the "pipeline of talented women" keep finding chances to succeed. During her first few weeks, she has prioritized getting more familiar with the budget and identifying areas for growth. "While I can't outspend some of my colleague institutions, our winning edge is going to be our people, and Las Vegas is a dynamic place...unlike any other college town I've lived in." (link)
College of Charleston Baseball HC Heath is reportedly under investigation for "abusive behavior," claims brought forward by former student-athletes. Per the Charleston Post & Courier, "The Cougars experienced an unusually high rate of player turnover since Heath took over the program in June 2015. Over the past two seasons, Charleston has had 46 different players on its roster." Heath is 59-57-1 in two seasons as skipper, has three years left on a deal that pays him a base salary of $154,875 annually. (link)
In a budget presentation to regents, South Carolina AD Tanner expects his department to bring in $121.9M during FY18 against operating expenses of $102.9M, both athletic department records. The school's biggest revenue increase will come via a one-time $4M signing bonus to extend its media rights contract with IMG, while the biggest increase in expenditures comes in the form of a $3.6M uptick in personnel salaries. In all, USC will spend the bulk of outs outlay on $44.6M in salaries, including FB HC Muschamp's $3M. The largest revenue source, at $40.1M, comes from NCAA and SEC distributions, followed by ticket sales ($21.7M), sponsorship, media rights and royalties ($17.9M) and the Gamecock Club ($13.5M). The department expects to pay $12M toward its $183.6M in outstanding debt during the fiscal year and contribute $7.1M toward the university through support and scholarship payments. (link)
Georgia Tech will end its apparel partnership with Russell Athletic when the contract expires next June, according to AD Stansbury, who is reportedly in discussions with Adidas, Nike and Under Armour to be the Yellowjackets' next apparel partner. The move makes Georgia Tech the third school this year to announce it will part ways with Russell, including Ohio and Western Kentucky, who have since agreed to new partnerships with Adidas and Nike, respectively. Stansbury, who says he's in the early stages of discussions with the three brands, hopes to be able to make a decision within the next few months. "So that, one, recruits can know what's going on and we can start to make plans for whatever transition we need to make." He adds: "I think  all three of them bring significant benefit to us if we line up with what their corporate strategy is, and a lot of that is where do they view Georgia Tech and Atlanta specifically. Because I think the strength of the partnership is going to be the synergy of what you’re both trying to accomplish." (link)
As it continues rebranding uniforms with the Fighting Hawks logo, North Dakota is also looking to unify its apparel partnership. As of now, FB wears Adidas, MBB wears Nike and hockey wears Reebok. UND Prez Kennedy has established a strategic plan outlining three reasons why the university is seeking a department-wide deal: a consistent look; an opportunity to streamline the retail process and allow fans to find and wear gear the players and coaches wear; and financial support. Assoc. AD for External Operations Doperalski: "The first time is always the hardest when you have all of these different contracts that end at different times. ... We've now been established at Division I and become champions in the Big Sky Conference. Our value is pretty high with the success our student-athletes have had." (link)
According to CBS columnist Norlander, any change to the NBA's current minimum age requirement would likely call for sacrifice from either MBB student-athletes or MBB itself. There's no perfect solution, he posits, and with the NBA and NBAPA being the two parties who will bargain the rule, the "NBA is not going to be hindering itself." And in talking to coaches around the country, MLB-style rules is gaining traction. Miami HC Larranaga: "I think if someone feels confident enough in their abilities that they can turn professional right out of high school, then they should be afforded that opportunity. I also believe someone who enters the college ranks should be committed to getting an education and not just use college as prep school for the NBA." Norlander contends it is more likely that if such a rule were to be adopted, it would likely be scaled back to a so-called two-and-done rule, though some, including Kentucky MBB Calipari, express skepticism that the NBA would willingly adopt that model. "The NBA doesn't want to do that. They don't want to go back to drafting high school players. So, whatever you're hearing, I can't see that happening. Now, if it would happen, I would love it. I think it would be great."  (link)
Headlining author Miller pens a guest column for the Hollywood Reporter on the "New World Order" at ESPN with last week's major personnel moves. Thesis: "There's an arguable Machiavellian subplot to the new organizational structure: It leaves no room anywhere for anyone else to play a significant role at the very top of ESPN. If someone outside the company were being groomed or considered for a very important position, well, tough; that person has in effect been locked out, unless they're willing to settle for the duties of a bathroom attendant. Skipper has in effect sealed the place from outside forces and made it clear it's his company, and his team to be filled with his players and no one else's." If succession happened today, Miller says it would be EVP, Affiliate Sales & Marketing Connolly, but EVPs Schnell & Magnus are clearly in the race. (link)
Inside Higher Ed's Bauer-Wolf asks, "How closely should institutions monitor sexual assault convictions by their athletes?" Bauer-Wolf: "Legal experts say institutions rely on all students to be truthful and disclose past indiscretions, and federal law demands they do so for some sex offenses. Running formal background checks would prove pricey and cumbersome -- they’re also imperfect. Crimes committed when the person was a minor, or incidents in other states, could go undetected." SUNY Assoc. General Counsel Storch: "It’s complicated -- there’s no … perfect product off the shelf for background checks." More. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Former Arkansas MBB student-athlete Kingsley discusses the journey from his native Nigeria, where he was at first too shy to participate in pick-up games and didn't know there were shoes specifically made for basketball, to preparing for Thursday's NBA draft. Kingsley, who moved to the U.S. in 10th grade, expresses gratitude for his host family and legal guardian during his HS years and calls going to the NCAA Tournament his favorite memory at Arkansas. Through the workout process, Kingsley observes that he enjoys improving each day. "Getting to play with and against these other college athletes has been a lot of fun. In the coming months, I know I’m going to be playing with a lot of new people so it’s good to get used to doing that now. My goal isn’t just to make it to the NBA. I want to have a long career in the league, hopefully 10, 12, or 14 years of playing in the NBA. But, it’s not a sprint. It’s a marathon." Full entry. (link)

Nevada AD Knuth calls AAC Commish Aresco a "smart guy who is very strategic in what he's doing," but says he's not exactly buying the AAC's 'Power 6' slogan. "Claiming the conference as the 'Power 6,' I'm not a fan at all. The reality is with the College Football Playoff, there's a contract with nine more years on it. For him to anoint them as the Power 6, it's a little early for that. Even the NCAA, there's a governing structure of the autonomous five conferences and the Group of 5. You can't just jump. You can't just say, 'We're ready. Let's go.'" Knuth is also willing to back up his rhetoric, suggesting a Mountain West v. AAC series in multiple sports. "Get on a plane and fly out there. Let's see how good the American Athletic Conference does playing football in Laramie, Wyoming. ... Let's see how great you are coming to Reno and playing us. Bring UConn out there and play us and then we'll see who is the better conference." In short, Knuth says before becoming part of the Power 6, the AAC should first prove its at the top of the Group of 5. "We're ready. Let's go." (link)
UNC Greensboro AD Record announces she will restructure her staff to better complement the department's strategic plan, which will released before the upcoming athletic season. Among those changes, Record promoted Kosciak to Deputy AD, while Fink will add chief revenue officer to his title of Senior Assoc. AD for Advancement. In addition, George will add chief marketing officer to his title of Senior Assoc. AD for External Ops, McCollester will expand his role and become Asst. AD for Strategic Communications and McCloy will be promoted to Asst. AD for Health and Sports Performance. (link)
For the second year in a row, St. Bonaventure has set all-time fundraising highs in both the Bonnies Athletic Fund and the Sixth Man Club. Combined, the school was able to raise over $970K this past fiscal year thanks to donations from over 1,200 supporters. AD Kenney: "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who supported us this past school year. We issued the 110 percent challenge to our BAF and Sixth Man Club donors this year and they really responded. The generosity of our donors and sponsors allows us to support our student-athletes so they can excel in the classroom and in competition." (link)
Uber-successful Michigan Softball HC Hutchins recalls a WBB practice being cut short in 1976 during her time as a student-athlete at rival Michigan State when the Spartans MBB HC told the women's team, "You need to get off this court, because nobody gives a damn about women's basketball." Hutchins on her reaction, "It was pure venom after that. It was the first time I thought, 'You son of a b----. We deserve better than that. Why are you more important than us?' It was like poking the bear." As espnW's Kahn writes, "That bear eventually became the winningest coach in softball history." Lots more on Hutchins' success story & her Title IX push. (link)

While the title of this article is aimed at the potential financial upside for the English Premier League to broadcast its own games & cutting out a network middle man, the same proposition in college athletics should make you wonder. And, with virtually all 'Power 5' departments investing millions in production facilities, is it really that far fetched? Distribution platforms & OTT solutions are the same challenges on both sides of the pond, "Just how big a fight will streaming services put up to gain a share of the action in future, too? And will the Premier League ever be able to cut out the middleman and simply pitch its own wares to the public? The posturing continues." (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
During a press conference yesterday, Alabama State AD Hines addressed a number of topics, most notably dismissing rumors that ASU is considering leaving the SWAC. Hines also took the opportunity to tout ASU's improved Academic Progress Rate scores and lay out his vision for the upcoming year, which includes building the university's fan and donor base, increasing marketing awareness on a national level, and winning what would be the school's fifth consecutive SWAC Commissioner’s Cup. Hines: "We've dominated our conference for the past couple of years. That's our goal and our plan every year. We've got to find somewhere to put all these trophies." (link)
New Mexico announced it will be adding value to its premium seating level at Dreamstyle Arena this coming season by lowering suite pricing and increasing club amenities that include a new "lounge experience" and additional food options at the U.S. Bank Club Level. Deputy AD for External Affairs Hutchins: "It was important to update our pricing along with increasing the amenities in our U.S. Bank Suite and Club Level. We received feedback from our stakeholders and we researched best practices. An overall 18% reduction in suite pricing is being sensitive to our economy. As always, our goal is to improve the experience for Lobo fans." (link)
Despite being warned by the UCF compliance office to either quit playing FB at the school or shut down his money-making YouTube channel, Knights student-athlete De La Haye has decided that he will continue posting his popular online videos. De La Haye: "At the end of the day, I’ve decided I’m going to keep making my videos. I’m going to continue bringing love and positivity and joy and inspiration to all my viewers, all my followers, all my subscribers. I’m going to upload regularly to this channel. I’m not stopping that. I’m not demonetizing. I refuse to. So it’s out of my hands now, the decision is in the NCAA’s hands, whether they want to suspend me or whether they want to let me do me." (link)
The train rolls north for Tailgate Guys as Penn State signs on the dotted line, the first Big Ten partner into the portfolio. The turnkey tailgating solution is a welcome one, per Nittany Lions Deputy AD Esten, "Penn State's tailgating environment is an iconic part of the pageantry of game day in Happy Valley. We are excited to add a full service tailgating option for our fans through our partnership with Tailgate Guys. We look forward to working with CEO Parker Duffey and his team to implement this opportunity for the 2017 season." (link)

SBD/SBJ's Michael Smith continues a conversation from the end of last week with perspective on what he'll be keeping an eye on over the next six months. "I'm really fascinated with the expense side of it. For years and years we've written about the revenue generation side and the way it has grown through media rights deals & other ways. But, there's so much money in the system." Smith also touches on the facilities arms race and how some ADs are expressing concern over how much money is being spent these days, plus a bit more. Listen by clicking the link. - link (length - 3:09)
