FAR

Dear parents/carers

FAR stands for Feedback, Action, Response, and from September this will become the umbrella under which staff will respond to student work in order that students understand how to make further progress and/or improve their work.

There has been considerable change over the last few years in the way student outcomes have been assessed. No longer is it the case that students and schools are judged on the number of C grades or above they can achieve in a limited number of subjects – progress is now king!

In what I see as a much more equitable system, students are judged on the progress they make from their starting points – the scaled scores they enter secondary schools with.

Furthermore, the key vehicle of assessment (in the absence of coursework and controlled assessment) has reverted extensively back to the terminal (end of course) examination. In order to fully prepare students for this terminal examination dominated process it is vital that they understand how well they have performed in key pieces of work and what they could do to improve further.

I will be speaking to students next week in assemblies about a consistent system (FAR) that they should expect across all subjects from September. I will explain how through their interaction with the FAR structure they should be clear about how they are progressing and what they can do to improve their work further.

Enjoy your weekend

Cancer Research UK Shine Night Walk

Some of the John Hanson ladies took part in a practice 10 mile overnight walk in aid of The Countess of Brecknock hospice last weekend.  The nine of them walked in the stifling heat from 10pm through to 1am finishing up at the town centre.

This was in preparation for the Cancer Research UK Shine Night Walk , a marathon on the 23rd September raising money for Children’s Cancer!

Cadbury World Business Studies trip

On Tuesday 20th June, 38 Business Studies students made the long drive to Cadbury World in Bournville. In a lovely air conditioned coach, the back half of the coach sang all the way which made the journey far more entertaining! You may be asking yourself ‘how does a trip to Cadbury World link to Business Studies?’.

Well, the founder John Cadbury has an interesting story and is a superb example of a successful entrepreneur who thought ‘outside of the box’. The students learnt all about his story and where it began through to where the company is today. As well as this they got to sample lots of delicious Cadbury chocolate and had a demonstration on how to make it. They also went on a fantastic 4D adventure with the Cadbury characters and walked through the packaging plant.

After lunch in the sunshine, we then had an educational talk led by an employee at Cad-bury World. In this talk students learnt about the changes to the ownership of Cadbury over the years and also discussed key topics that are linked to our current unit of work; for example stakeholders, takeovers/mergers, shareholders and functional departments within a business. The students were engaged throughout and were able to answer some tricky questions. A few also asked some very good questions.

We left Cadbury World feeling full of choco-late, having more chocolate in our bags to take home after a quick visit to the shop and once again the back of the bus serenaded us home! I am now thinking of starting a Busi-ness Studies choir!!

                                         SPORTS RESULTS

Football review 2017
With the football season finally over (Yes in June!) it’s been another great season for boy’s football at John Hanson. A total of 69 competitive games were played, which is a massive commitment from the staff but also the students and their parent/carers. I would like to thank all students for their commitment to the football season and also thank their parent/carers who are here waiting for us to return from fixtures and also bringing the students kit into school when they had forgotten something!
Year 7
Year 7 dominated the Andover league winning every game without conceding a single goal to claim the title. The team demonstrated a similar pattern in the Salisbury league winning the group and completed a double after emphatically beating Bishop Wordsworth 9-1 in the final. In the County cup they lost to the eventual winners in the semi-finals after convincingly defeating previous opponents. In the Winchester cup the team lost in the final to Thornden. The 5-a-side team won the Andover round and produced some amazing displays in the South-East round but unfortunately fell short in the final and missed out on a place in the national tournament. The team played the most games out of all year groups with a total of 23 games, which included County cup, Salisbury cup, Winchester cup, 5 a side tournaments, friendlies and B team fixtures. A total of 28 boys played for the team at some point this year.  Win percentage - 79%.

Year 8
Treble winners!! The team had a really successful season by winning the most silverware of any of the teams. The season didn’t start too well after taking an early exit in the County cup to Kings. The team were unbeaten in their successful quest to retain the Andover league title. They finished top of their group in the Salisbury league and beat Bishop Wordsworth in the semi-finals and then deservedly beat Sarum Academy in the final to win the cup. The team’s treble came from beating local rivals Harrow Way in the Winchester plate final. The team’s resilience shone through in that final, after coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2. Win percentage – 86%
Year 9
The team had a great year after retaining the Andover league title for the 3rd successive year. The team completed the double after convincingly winning the Salisbury cup after beating Avon Valley in the final. The boys unfortunately fell at the semi-finals stage of the Winchester cup to eventual winners Thornden. The team’s best achievements of the season came from the County cup. They made it to the final which was played at Aldershot Town against Calthorpe Park but were beaten by the better team on the day. Having played all away games en-route to the final and only conceding in one game which was to last years winners Kings, the team can be extremely proud of their achievements this year. Winning percentage – 88%.

Year 10
The boys have had a great season making it to two cup finals. Unfortunately the team lost both finals where they didn’t play to their full potential. A number of the players played in the Year 11 winning Andover league team. The boys have shown massive improvement in their performances this season and played some great attacking football and as a result will be entered into the Hampshire cup next season. Winning percentage – 78%

Year 11
The boys finished their 5 years at JH claiming the Andover schools league title. They convincingly claimed the title with a goal difference of +17, whilst on conceding 1 goal. They also made two cup semi-finals, but unfortunately couldn’t make the Salisbury or Winchester cup final. Win percentage – 78%
