EFG’s upgraded Code of Ethics:
a constant work towards an ethical European family of Geologists

Conscious that a set of principles only grows stronger the more it reflects the profession’s as well as society’s realities and changes, the EFG makes a point of constantly upgrading its “Code of Ethics” and presents now its newest version that includes an amendment (see paragraph 12) relating to the working environment. This updated version was unanimously approved by the EFG Council whose membered all agreed on the necessity to align with recent initiatives taken by several scientific societies. With this updated “Code of Ethics”, EFG therefore joins other scientific societies in taking a strong stand in favour of a respectful and safe working environment.

EFG projects | ¡VAMOS! Market Survey
As part of its efforts to extract more raw materials within the EU, the European Commission has funded the ¡VAMOS! project to design and build a novel underwater mining excavation system for flooded inland open-cut mines.
As the project approaches the site-testing and post-trial analysis phase, the consortium would like to ask experts in the mining industry for their impression of the concept and its applicability. Following this link, you will have access to an anonymous 5-minute ¡VAMOS! Market Survey, where you will be able to send your feedback as well as register your interest in an upcoming open-day.

EFG projects | CHPM2030 releases new project brochure
The CHPM2030 project is defining a technology pathway that could substantially decrease Europe’s dependency on both the import of critical metallic minerals and of energy. The project aims at new concepts coupling the production of geothermal energy and metals and thus improving the economic viability of EGS projects.
Discover more about the ongoing work and expected results in the new project brochure that you may download here.

EurGeol of the month: Barry Hunt

Each month we ask one of the European Geologist title holders to tell us about his professional experiences and which role the title has played for his career. This month we have talked to Barry Hunt, member of the Geological Society of London (GSL). Barry’s early career between 1988 and 2002 involved working for two civil engineering consultancies as a geomaterials scientist. In 2002 Barry started his own company, IBIS, specialising in the expert investigation of construction materials. The specialist knowledge and services provided by Barry have allowed him to be instrumental in the resolution of problems ranging from blastdamaged stone claddings in the City of London to advice on the quarrying and extraction of stone from abroad for import to the UK. Other areas of experience include the investigation of all types of building finishes, specialist advice on remedial treatments and the preparation of advice for actual and potential use in litigation, mediation and arbitration. Read more

VOLCANOES’ NIGHT
VOLCANOES’ NIGHT was a Marie Curie Sklodowska Researchers’ Night project series running from 2012 to 2015 under three consecutive contracts funded by the European Commission. The aim of VOLCANOES’ NIGHT was to use volcanoes as a background against which the role of geoscientists could be explained to the public. EC funding for VOLCANOES’ NIGHT ended on 1 December 2015. The project is currently in a 5-year exploitation phase, during which the aim of the Project Coordinator is to maintain information services, promote the organisation of similar events, and widely disseminate the scientific achievements of this project. To safeguard the original non-commercial, non-partisan spirit of VOLCANOES’ NIGHT, the organisers are now converting the project into a flexible and inclusive scheme in which any organisation can participate. The aim is to encourage research teams, universities, municipalities, museums and geoscientists to join the initiative and organise their own VOLCANOES’ NIGHT on 29 September 2017.
How to get involved?
Download the 1-page Information Leaflet or go directly to Your Volcanoes’ Night for more details. Make sure you also check the Frequently Asked Questions section then get in touch with the Project Coordinator using the Contact Form of the project website or via direct e-mail: info@nochedevolcanes.es or ariadna.ortega@lapalmacentre.eu.
