Against All Odds—God at Work in Utah Valley

In September 1988 I told my wife, Sara, about an Evangelical Free church in Orem, Utah that needed a pastor. I said, “The average attendance is around 25, the average age 75, the church isn’t going to be able to support us financially, but what an opportunity!” Sara’s initial response was “Have you lost your mind?” A month later I went to Utah to meet with the leaders of the church. I wanted to know what it was like to be an evangelical in Utah Valley.

Living in Utah is a unique experience. It is 90% LDS and the center point of Mormon culture. As I listened that night, I heard stories of negativity and hopelessness. Serious thought was being given to closing the doors of the church. After the meeting I called Sara and told her she didn’t need to worry, we will not be going to Utah. The next day that changed. I preached at the church and the words, “They were like sheep without a shepherd” came to my mind and would not leave. As I drove home there was this growing desire to go to Utah. Vision began to form. I came home believing that there was incredible potential at this church. God loves to do things in places where people say that it cannot be done.

Not only did my heart change, but so did Sara’s. In March 1989 we came to Utah to lead what is now known as CenterPoint Church. Ministry in this Mormon dominated culture has been a hard road. In the early years it made a huge difference to be connected with people that believed with us. A ministry at EvFree Fullerton was created in large part to support and pray for our church and the mission field of Utah Valley...
