In a day packed with transactions, the exit of Southern Utah AD Butikofer for the Deputy AD spot at Purdue leads us off. Butikofer: "Ultimately at heart, I’m a Big Ten guy. The Midwest is home and it’s exciting to step back into the Big Ten footprint. […] The position and the associated responsibilities are very well aligned with my past experiences and skill sets. The ability to bring my broad base experiences from sitting in the chair — the knowledge, the decision making, the skills and the analytical capabilities — to bring all that to the table and be able to help Mike and anticipate things is a very exciting proposition." Butikofer's portfolio in West Lafayette will include all external elements, plus the Learfield & Nike deals & sport administrator responsibilities for FB & MBB. SUU Prez Wyatt: "To say he took us to the next level would be an understatement." (link)
Others on the Move: Detroit News reporter Paul tweets, "Eastern Michigan could/should have its new athletic director within a couple weeks. There are four finalists, sources say." (link); Former Tennessee FB HC Fulmer named Special Advisor to the President for Community, Athletics & University Relations. Vols AD Currie calls Fulmer a "perfect ambassador." Base pay will be $100K annually with a monthly $2,500 expense account. Fulmer says Currie "has matured as an athletic director." (link, link); America East senior leader Brown named Deputy Commish. (link); Buffalo Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Garzarelli tabbed as the new AD at Wisconsin-Whitewater (DIII). (link); Eastern Kentucky AD Lochmueller recruits Presbyterian Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Downer as his new Senior Assoc. AD in Richmond. (link); The Missouri to Louisiana pipeline continues as UL AD Maggard selects Tigers Assoc. AD for Development Yantko as the new Deputy AD for External Operations in Lafayette. (link); Former Oregon State AD De Carolis named Executive Director of the Willamette Valley chapter of Girls on the Run. (link)
The Albuquerque Journal's Grammar reports Parker Executive Search will aid New Mexico with its AD hiring process at a price point of $50K plus expenses. The process hasn't officially started moving, but is expected to do so by the end of the week. An internal committee of five to six leaders is being arranged & will likely include multiple regents. Also, Interim AD Ruggiero will make $206,250 during her time as Interim AD, up from her previous rate of $165K. (link)
Richmond Prez Crutcher says the AD search at his institution "will officially get underway as the new academic year begins in late August." Crutcher adds that a search firm of record will be tabbed over the summer & the internal process will be led by new EVP/COO Hale, who is being promoted on July 1 from his current spot of VP for Business & Finance. One of the biggest question staring Pac-12 leaders in the face is how to enhance the value of the Pac-12 Networks to spin-off more cash as other 'Power 5' brethren continue to see TV deals escalate sharply. The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner dives in, analyzes comments by outgoing Pac-12 Networks boss Murphy-Stephans, finds it odd that she pointed out other revenue streams, like ticket sales, that have also put the league behind. Wilner alludes to some late FB kick-offs, created by the Network, as part of the issue, "One could take the comments as such: We’re going to create a problem for you and then blame you for not solving the problem." Wonders if an equity sale is the right move as a $1.6B gap could exist between the Pac-12 & Big Ten over the next seven years. More. (link)
Syracuse AD Wildhack & Senior Deputy AD Frazier run through FB scheduling principles for the Orange. Frazier points to an evolving philosophy with HC turnover, notes variables of who has the same open dates, then a narrowing-down process according to style & fit. Wildhack comments that "high-quality inventory" will be key for the new ACC Network linear play. "Likely" is the response on a question about future FCS opponents. Frazier says financial numbers have never been the main sticking point in his career to get deals done, regional opponents are of more importance right now, Wildhack does not expect ACC divisional realignment in the future, lots more. (link)
Former College of Charleston Baseball student-athletes speak-out on reports that Cougars HC Heath is under investigation for the mistreatment of his players. One: "(Heath) has helped me grow up over my years...The #1 thing he preaches is becoming a better man and growing up. He develops kids into men that are prepared for the future. [...] everything is just blown out of proportion. People who didn't play well here are upset and looking at someone to blame." Another: "I worked and played for Matt heath. And there was NEVER any abusive behavior towards players!!" (link)
From earlier in the week, "In a unanimous decision, the [Supreme] court ruled that the government may not deny a trademark registration for potentially offensive names. The case centered on an Asian-American band called the Slants that had lost its trademark protection, even though it said the name was not intended to disparage anyone." New York Times' Belson: "Although the ruling focused on a technical matter, it could amplify an increasingly partisan dispute at the crossroad of politics, sports and money. Leagues, colleges and high schools continue to revisit the use of their names less because of fear of legal retribution and more out of concern about the potential impact on their brands and pushback from fans and other interest groups." (link)
Missed this late last week as the NCAA named the search committee to assist with the process of hiring a new EVP of Inclusion & Human Resources up in Indy. Pac-12 Commish Scott, Georgetown AD Reed, Women Leaders in College Sports CEO Phillips, Ohio State Prez Drake, MOAA Executive Director Johsnon, Winthrop Assoc. AD Montgomery, NCAA Eligibility Center VP Martin & others make up the group. As previously noted, Hedrick & Struggles will aid the search. (link

Zenger/Folkman leadership development consultancy CEO Zenger: "How Managers Drive Results and Employee Engagement at the Same Time." 1) Communicates clear strategy & direction; 2) Inspires & motivates; 3) Establishes stretch goals; 4) Has high integrity & inspires trust; 5) Develops others; and, 6) Is coachable. Zenger covers how a) Drives for results & b) People skills are applicable at every step of the way. "We found the leaders who possess both of these skills were rated in the 91st percentile in their overall leadership effectiveness." (link)

Illinois AD Whitman announces a shift on renovations to Memorial Stadium as the Illini will focus on a stand-alone building attached to its indoor practice facility to serve as an operations hub for the FB program. Expected investment is in the $60M to $80M range, far less than the projected $135M to renovate Memorial's south horseshoe to weave in the new digs. Other projects on Whitman's radar include an upgraded hoops practice venue, plus opportunities for Baseball, Soccer, Track & Gymnastics. (link); Michigan State Deputy AD Ianni on upgrades to the Breslin Center, "When you do fixed-exhibit kinds of things, they’re expensive. And when you see them once, you’re done. So we took it a different direction, and it’s mostly all LED technology. The beauty of it is we can tailor that space for whatever’s going on in the building. We can change the content. So every time people come into that space they’ll see something different." (link)
Notable FB & HC agent Dye Jr. has sued former business partner Sexton for allegedly stealing clients when he left SportsTrust Advisors for CAA back in 2011. The suit was technically filed back in January of 2016, but has been stuck in the appeals process for quite some time. Dye contends Sexton "spent an inordinate amount of time building a relationship with [former Alabama stand-out] Jones" that precluded him from having a chance to sign other Crimson Tide student-athletes. Sexton recently won a motion for the dispute to be heard in Federal Court, not Georgia Superior Court. (link)
Missouri FB student-athlete Frazier: "I will not be available to any local media this season. I gain nothing from it. I am still an amateur, not binded to do interviews (yet)." Earlier in the week, Frazier looks to have taken exception to how the arrest of a Tigers MBB student-athlete for underage drinking was recently covered, "The writers get such a kick when MU athletes are arrested. Almost as though it's a chance for them to reinforce their beliefs. Teenager with a beer is covered like watergate. Frats spiking drinks, committing assault, and encouraging underage drinking is a non story." (link)
It might be better to ask which coaches at Oklahoma didn't receive a contract extension or compensation bump than the other way around as dozens are listed under "contract adjustments." Of note, Sooners AD Castiglione was extended through June of 2022, will receive a $225K retention bonus if he's still leading in Norman through that date. New Baseball HC Johnson's base will be $375K. Lots more. (link); New FB HC Riley inks a five-year pact worth $3.1M to start with $200K annual increases. Former HC Stoops will be paid $325K as a Special Assistant to the AD. (link)
More HC Notes: Wisconsin-Milwaukee AD Braun selects Northwestern AC Baldwin to take over her MBB program. (link); MVC MBB HCs talk about the opportunity ahead with Wichita State exiting. SIU's Henson thinks the league is prepped for one of the all-time great title pursuits. (link); Stanford receives an endowment commitment for its Women's Swimming HC position. (link); St. Bonaventure AD Kenney tabs longtime Canisius Men's LAX HC Mearns to launch the Bonnies program in 2019. (link); Xavier AD Christopher promotes from within as Baseball AC O'Connor becomes HC for the Musketeers. (link); USA Today's Wolken writes on the best back-to-back FB HC hires. 1) Stanford; 2) Oregon; 3) LSU; 4) Utah; and, 5) Miami (FL). Can you name the coaches? (link); A new book out on Alabama FB HC Saban comes with some comical insight into the relationship between Saban & former Crimson Tide OC Kiffin, who is now the HC at FAU. (link)
Money, money, money: Abilene Christian secures two more key gifts for its Wildcat Stadium push, which in total put nearly $2M more into the ACU coffers. $41M+ has now been raised for the $50M project. (link); Former Patriot League Executive Director Schlie Femovich & her husband have committed $600K to her alma mater, Valparaiso, to create an endowment for women student-athletes. (link); The fundraising arm at Pacific hit its goal of $50K in new cash for its Fund Drive the sixth straight year. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Mississippi State AD Cohen says next Baseball season will feature a "limited home schedule" with major construction going on around Dudy Noble Field. Hosting all SEC series at Dudy Noble is the main aim, "we’ll apologize to [our fans], but whenever you take a step forward, you have to take a couple steps back in the short term so that you make sure you build one of the great facilities in the country." Additional facility priorities include an indoor Tennis venue, upgrades to Humphrey Coliseum & the south end zone at FB. More from Cohen. (link)
With just Baseball points left to consider, Tulsa leads the American in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings at 68th. Golden Hurricane AD Gragg: "We obviously stepped up competition (in the American) and what we’re competing against, so that would be a great accomplishment for us. I’m very proud of our student-athletes and our coaches for the jobs they have done." Men's Soccer & Men's Cross Country took home league crowns, FB ripped off a 10-win season, Softball won the AAC, Men's & Women's Indoor & Outdoor Track excelled & Women's Tennis also made the NCAA Tourney. (link)
Old Dominion boss Selig continues his push to get more Monarchs contests on ESPN3, "ESPN3 is mainstream. You don’t have to have an IT degree to find it. It’s not quite the same stature of ESPN, but it’s getting there. Our goal is to have as many games as possible on ESPN3. We’d like all of our football games not shown on broadcast TV to be on ESPN3." Five of nine for the upcoming FB slate already fit the bill, $50K in infrastructure upgrades should help ODU execute on the platform. Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Alexander says more investment for the effort is coming. (link)
I've heard OSKR's Schwarz hypothesize on this idea before, but now it's in print, making it that much more interesting. Position statement via Vice Sports' Hruby: "Form an HBCU-exclusive basketball league. Tell the NCAA to pound sand, and pay the nation's very best high school and college basketball players to be part of it. Profit. Oh, and also change the face of big-time campus athletics forever." Schwarz: "There's no amateurism. If we're in a high school recruit's living room, our pitch is that we want to give you a contract for $75,000, with workers' comp, health insurance, and a 401(k). There are opportunities for ancillary revenue on top of that. We offer great campuses and alumni networks. We invite NBA teams to come, and to draft you while you're still in school. If and when you make that jump, we are thrilled for you. We walk through that menu, and then we ask, 'If you're thinking of going to a school outside of our league, ask them if those same possibilities are there.'" Lots more, clearly, including the need for a financier & HBCU buy-in. (link)
Around Higher Ed: Looks like Texas A&M-Corpus Christi brass will hire Interim Prez Quintanilla into the role on a permanent basis. (link); The new Prez at Albany will be announced today. Russell Reynolds has aided the process for $200K. (link); Alabama State will employ Camden, AL-based law firm Pompey & Pompey to help find the right new leader for the university. (link); Indiana State is working with Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates as it looks to hire a new boss. (link)
Also Noticed: The Big East held its inaugural Mental Health Summit late last week at Georgetown. Commish Ackerman says one goal was to "ease the stigma associated with mental health on our campuses and reassure our student-athletes that sometimes it’s okay to not feel okay." Former Tennessee WBB student-athlete & WNBA star Holdsclaw spoke to a group from wide-ranging responsibility backgrounds, as did espnW's Fagan & others. (link); West Virginia FB student-athlete Grier, a transfer from Florida who was also sitting out from testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, will be eligible for the Mountaineers to begin the 2017 season. (link); Auburn & UAB are trying to find a spot to match-up on the gridiron. (link); A former Sam Houston State Women's Tennis HC broke multiple NCAA rules, receives a three-year show cause. (link); Two more jersey patches in the NBA: Fitbit for the Timberwolves & Disney World for the Magic. (link); Under Armour inks ESPN MBB analyst Bilas as a "brand ambassador." (link); ComScore says 3.1M households are subscribed to skinny bundles. (link); Uber boss Kalanick is out. (link)
What's Purdue getting in new Deputy AD Butikofer? Here's a two-part 1.Q with the outgoing Southern Utah boss from last year. Part I covers his diverse path to leading a department that included a couple of big state institutions (Iowa, Arizona State & Minnesota), a small DIII (Luther College) & a military academy (Army West Point). Part II includes thoughts on how to get a sold "return on luck," as he did at Arizona State learning from some notable current ADs who were in Tempe at the time. Part I (12:42) / Part II (9:55)
