The Dow Distinguished Awards for Interdisciplinary Sustainability awarded $5,000, a total of $75,000, in seed grants for each student-led team at the University with innovative sustainable solutions. Each team works collaboratively with at least three distinct disciplines, a U-M faculty advisor, and community or organizational partners.

Thanks to a $20 million grant, U-M now has a new institute charged with the sustainable management of the Great Lakes. The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research will focus on: the observation of systems and advanced technology, invasive species and food-web ecology, hydrometeorological and ecosystem forecasting, and the protection and restoration of resources.

U-M students conducting the study wanted to understand the effects of urban development on the native bee populations. The team suspects that large numbersof vacant lots and residential properties in Detroit are boosting bumblebee populations.

As part of the University’s 2025 Sustainability Initiative, M-Dining has been purchasing local and sustainable food for the dining halls since 2006. Now spending 12.7% of its $15 million dollar budget on local and sustainable foods, M-Dining is moving closer to purchasing 20% of its supplies in local foods.

The Campus Farm at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, a student-run food system initiative, has recently received a grant from Ford Motor Company to install in-ground production beds, an irrigation system, and a washing station. With these new installations, the Campus Farm is planning to become certified to sell local, sustainable produce to M-Dining.
