In a letter addressed to "Fans of the Ville," Louisville MBB HC Pitino contends that the penalty exacted by the NCAA in the wake of the Katina Powell saga is "beyond reason" and explains what he characterizes as "the truth and the only truth." Pitino reiterates his assertion that had he known of the violations committed in the basketball dorm named in honor of his brother-in-law, those responsible "wouldn't be able to get out of town fast enough." He also takes exception with the NCAA's contention that he did not ask enough pointed questions, explaining that he asked both staff and recruits what they did on their visits. He adds: "No, I did not ask the staff if they saw any strippers last night. I can assure you that if I asked [former AC] Andre [McGee] any difficult question he would've lied to my face to avoid immediate termination. [...] There are no questions I asked to even give me a small clue to what was going on." In closing, Pitino implores fans to keep up morale, as "you, our loyal Louisville family, can rest assured we believe in doing the right thing and doing things that are important in the eyes of God." Kansas plans to pour $300M into an overhaul of Memorial Stadium & a new indoor FB practice facility. AD Zenger says renderings of the project will be ready in three weeks time. FB HC Beaty: "That guy (Zenger) has done so much here, and for him to clear the deck and really make room for football right now — and he’s a football guy at heart — knowing that our fans deserve a really, really nice stadium … we want these people to be comfortable and really enjoy their time there. [...] It will be something that will be just that next step in transcending our program to the next level. We really do have to keep up with the facility war that goes on out there." (link)
As of earlier this month, 19 women have been hired as NCAA ADs or commissioners across all divisions, according to ESPNW's Voepel, who adds that the 37 women who ascended into those roles in 2016 marked a 95% increase from as recently as 2012. Penn State AD Barbour: "The world of intercollegiate athletics is coming to understand more and more the value of different voices and perspectives." However, there are only four female ADs within the 'Power 5,' and Voepel asks why, when studies have shown that hiring women into executive roles improves a firm's bottom line, there aren't more. The answer, she posits, is due in part to football. Barbour explains: "There was this notion that because women, in general, don't play football, how would you administer or supervise it." At Tennessee, AD Currie advocates for creating a culture where "everybody can speak up," noting that when there is perhaps only one woman in the room, she may be less likely to speak up during a meeting than she would in a one-on-one setting. "We recognize that happens with men, too. But we should be intentional about developing strong leaders who happen to be women." Women Leaders CEO Phillips agrees: "We do not advocate for women to receive jobs just because they are women. ... There is empirical evidence that shows us that traditional female skill sets -- relationship skills, collaboration, higher emotional intelligence and a deeper focus on meaning and purpose -- are becoming more valued in the workplace." The NCAA released a 60-page report on progress made by Title IX on its 45th anniversary. Of note: Since 1988, 803 women's programs were added & 330 men's teams were cut. Since 1982 the overall share of female student-athletes across all divisions has increased from less than 30% to 46.7% as of 2016. Institutions with FB spend a disproportionate amount on the gridiron sport in comparison to women's sports. The same situation exists for men's HC salaries & recruiting budgets. The surge in media rights & other revenues since 2005 have helped to drive overall FBS budgets for both men's ($12.8M to $27.3M) & women's sports ($5.5M to $10.5M). (link); Here's the full report. (link)
Michigan State AD Hollis, MBB boss Izzo & WBB HC Merchant all get one-year contract extensions in East Lansing. For Hollis, it means he could lead the Spartans through 2022 at a base pay rate of $688K, which was unchanged with the extension. Izzo's & Merchant's agreements now stretch through 2024. No compensation edits for the hoops HCs, either. (link)
Tennessee Tech and AD Wilson agree to a five-year extension through 2022. Wilson, who has been with the university since 2004, led the Golden Eagles to a school record 101.5 points in the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Cup, good for a fifth-place finish. He adds that the program has momentum as it focuses on increasing attendance, fundraising and corporate support. (link)
Following the passing of his mother, former Tennessee WBB HC Summitt, and the resignation of his post as Louisiana Tech WBB HC for an improper relationship with a student-athlete, Tyler Summitt tells the Knoxville News-Sentinel that his world is "like a whole other life" since returning to Knoxville, where he is pursuing his MBA at UT. While he does not discuss the events that led to his resignation, Summitt does acknowledge that he worries his actions may affect his mother's legacy. "There [have been] moments that were really hard on a lot of levels because I felt like I let mom down. That was probably the biggest thing. I felt like I let her down in 10 different ways." Moving forward, Summitt says he's focused on his studies and managing his mother's estate, determined to be a "good steward" of his inheritance. When his mother retired, she opted to collect a yearly benefit of $173K which, adjusted for cost of living, will be collected by her son for the rest of his life. "I will be forever grateful to my mom for what she left me." (link)
High school players should be eligible for the NBA Draft, asserts Duke MBB HC Krzyzewski while appearing on ESPN's Mike & Mike earlier this week. Coach K also maintains that his recruiting philosophy in the one-and-done era has not changed, saying that "we've always recruited really good players who are good students and good kids, and now that combination has produced one-and-dones. ... We're not going to stop recruiting them, but that doesn't mean we've changed our philosophy. The world of basketball has changed, and we're trying to adapt to those changes." On allowing high school players to enter the NBA draft, Coach K compares the situation to theater or music, observing that if, at 16, "you're really good, you go on a different path." He also believes each NBA team should have a minor league affiliate which would serve as a training opportunity for players who want to focus solely on basketball. "I mean, a kid who's really, really good coming out of high school, who does not want to go to school, would gain more from being in a pro system where he is working on his craft and his body and the development every day, just like a minor league, just like a baseball player." (link)
After announcing that Georgia Tech would end its apparel relationship with Russell Athletic, Yellow Jackets AD Stansbury offers more detail on what Tech is considering as it weighs options between Nike, Under Armour and Adidas. "Timing is a huge thing, and also what their corporate priorities are at this time. So that's why we're, I think, in the early stages of those conversations, just trying to gauge where the interest might be." While recognizing the ubiquity of Nike, Stansbury acknowledges that former GT teammate Huntley's role as a VP at Under Armour is something to consider. "I think it's always helpful to have somebody that is in a leadership role, even if (Huntley) may not be directly engaged." While it may not turn out to be a determining factor, it is worth noting that, in 1996, Tech provided Under Armour and CEO Plank the company's first major sale, keeping the company from going under, and according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the company's technical orientation may align well Georgia Tech. As of now, UA has two ACC partners in Notre Dame and Boston College. (link)
The public nature in which Ole Miss & North Carolina are currently battling NCAA penalties can rally "active stakeholders" who "become an effective arm of the university’s crisis response," per Arkansas Sports Management professor Dittmore for AthleticDirectorU. Dittmore points to research by his peers that "found evidence of fans using social media to attack the accuser, directing criticisms toward media outlets for their reporting, as well as diverting attention toward other schools facing NCAA sanctions." Miami (FL)'s past situation involving rouge donor Shapiro is also a part of the narrative, though there are some risks involved with the strategy. In closing, Dittmore suggests the creation of bite-sized content for social media purposes may make these types of campaigns even more effective. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Sports Business Daily Executive Editor Madkour chronicles a follow-up meeting to the Vatican's inaugural Sport at the Service of Humanity conference. Held at Villanova and facilitated by Big East and Commish Ackerman, the two-day meeting focused on how college athletics could instill values and improve lives through six core principles: compassion, respect, love, enlightenment, balance and joy. Participants cautioned against the "football-ization" of college athletics in terms of demands put on student-athletes, including schedules, training and other pressures. Madkour: "The notion of sports as just one component of an individual’s education and personal development is sound, and it’s often lost amid the pressures of commercialism and the zeal to win. Ackerman and her colleagues are continuing to push the dialogue forward, and that’s half the battle." Full commentary. (link)

Toledo announces a six-year partnership with Nike, effective July 1. The agreement makes Nike the official footwear, apparel, accessory and equipment company for UT's 16 sports, unifying the programs under one brand through 2022-23. AD O'Brien: "Nike is one of the most recognizable and innovative brands in the world, so we feel this partnership will be very beneficial for our program. Partnering with Nike will also create a consistent brand for our Athletic Department. Many of our student-athletes have told me that they are very excited to be wearing the swoosh on their uniforms, shoes and other apparel." FB student-athlete Thompson puts it more succinctly: "I'm excited about making the switch to Nike. I've always been a Nike guy growing up. They're the alpha dog of the sports world. I can't wait!" (link)
Oklahoma AD Castiglione says fundraising for upgrades & Baseball & Softball are currently in the "quiet phase of a capital campaign." Upgrades for Tennis & Gymnastics, as well as a new student-athlete center, also sound like they're on the way. Castiglione: "(We're) hoping the economy keeps growing. That helps the fundraising for sure. But it's something that we're trying to push each of the projects and get some commitments so we can move them forward as quickly as possible." (link); George Washington inks a 10-year extension for Baseball to continue playing at Barcroft Park. The Colonials will commence the addition of a multimillion dollar clubhouse. (link)
During the upcoming college football season, some 40 FB stadiums nationwide will serve beer in common areas. WRALSportsFan examines each of ACC school in North Carolina and how the sale of alcohol at their venues may be changing thanks to the loosening of some laws in the state. UNC AD Cunningham says the Tar Heels will stick to sales in the premium seats only and Duke AD White adds that the Blue Devils, like their biggest rival, haven't had much conversation about moving sales to the common areas, but will be studying it. NC State boss Yow indicates discussions have taken place in Raleigh, but it would take a collusion with public peers UNC and ECU to challenge the state legislation even more. Wake Forest AD Wellman, who believes the topic would be controversial, was "shocked" when more than 50 people on several different boards gathered to study the issue and voted unanimously to implement the common area sales for the Deacs. For comparison, Syracuse and Miami also serve in the open arena and fans can purchase beer at the league's FB, Basketball and Baseball championships. Yow estimates that "AD brethren would suggest somewhere between $200K-$300K" annually in potential revenue. (link)
Oregon's student newspaper reports former MBB student-athlete Bigby-Williams, who has decided to transfer to LSU, played the 2016-17 season while being under investigation for sexual assault at his previous institution, Gillette College in Wyoming (NJCAA). However, a report from Oregon's police department makes no mention of the exactness of the claim. Further, Prez Schill delivers some sharp comments to reporter Jacoby, "I don’t have any awareness of that. In any event, I can’t comment on an individual student. What if I was asked by another reporter about you being obnoxious? Would you want me to tell them that? [...] The fact that someone is under investigation doesn’t mean that they’re guilty, and to be penalizing somebody just because we’re looking into something doesn’t mean that you should take away their rights. Every case is going to be different, and obviously the most important thing from my point of view as president — and I think yours as a student — is first and foremost to make sure that the students and the faculty and all members of our community are safe." (link)
More HC Notes: The contract for new Cal FB HC Wilcox includes average annual compensation over five years of $1.9M. $100K signing bonus, $100K for six regular season wins, $325K for eight, $25K for beating Stanford, $60K for a team GPA of 3.0+. Nike will reportedly sell some of its product lines to Amazon for the first time. WSJ's Germano & Stevens: "While Nike sells its shoes and sportswear through department stores and specialty retailers, it has refused to sell directly to Amazon, fearing it would undermine its brand. But with traffic to traditional stores on the decline and chains like Sports Authority disappearing, Nike has been ramping up efforts to sell directly to consumers, especially its own e-commerce efforts." The deal also looks to come with an extended push by Amazon to crack down on counterfeits. (link)

Tennessee, UT Chattanooga & UT Martin now have a new athletics committee of trustees involved in the oversight of their athletic departments, not to be confused with the athletic advisory board each campus still has in place that reports to respective Chancellors. Athletics Committee chair Anderson: "I think there were concerns that the board of trustees was not at all involved in athletics in any way and it was a way to have some accountability." (link); More comments from former Tennessee FB HC Fulmer, who will now work in a special role for UT Prez DiPietro, "John (Currie) was an assistant AD for God sakes, he didn’t fire me. I think it was over-dramatized at least, but we have had several good meetings together and he’s been very respectful to our time at Tennessee and our success and particularly to my coaches who were so loyal to UT." (link)
The Spectrum dives into the background of newly-named Southern Utah Interim AD Corum, who admits she wants the permanent title,"I was reading some business journals last week and I came across an article that was pretty interesting. It said when you have an organization that is going in the right direction, the wise thing is to hire within because you don’t want to change the direction." The former Stanford, LSU, SEC and UConn staffer has a few months to prove herself, as SUU Prez Wyatt indicated he won't make an official decision until after the fall semester starts. (link)
Early TV viewership numbers for the College World Series are sizzling. The first six games of the tourney were up 95% year-over-year & with a total live + streaming average audience of 923K, it's the top mark since 2011. Top markets, not surprisingly, led by New Orleans, followed by Louisville & Portland (remember, only the Top 56 DMAs are measured by Nielsen). Of note, five of the first six games this year were broadcast on ESPN with the other on ESPN2. Last year, the breakdown was one on ESPN, three on ESPN2 & two on ESPNU. (link)
Tailgate Guys adds another big brand to its growing portfolio as North Carolina will also employ the company's turnkey solution for premier FB hospitality. Rams Clubs members will get the first crack at packages. Tar Heels AD Cunningham: "We want every football game day at Carolina to be memorable [...] With only limited parking on campus, Tailgate Guys will make it easier for our fans to tailgate before games." (link)
The word "sports" is not mentioned a single time in this Hollywood Reporter piece. However, Apple has made one of its strongest moves to date in a push to gain relevance in the TV ecosystem with the hire of former Sony Pictures heads Van Amburg & Erlicht, the pair behind hits like Breaking Bad & The Shield. WME TV literary agent Greenberg says clients throughout Hollywood will be anxious to work with "cash-rich" Apple on projects. While there's no direct connection to sports here, it's pretty important to understand what the tech giant is doing in the TV space so you can make sense of which sports journalists actually know what they're talking about when bloviating on the future of media. (link)
Also Noticed: With former Deputy AD Hernandez off to the same role at Texas Tech, the Miami Herald's Jackson says of leadership at Miami (FL), "Jenn Strawley, UM’s deputy A.D., is now clearly No. 2 behind AD Blake James." (link); Wright State Swim supporters are getting closer to saving their program as a well-heeled donor stepped up with a $20K matching offer to get the campaign much closer to its goal of $85K.
