During the summer, many parishes are beginning to look at their stewardship campaigns for funding their ministries in 2018, and they are already preparing documents, letters and related communications. If your parish is not among them, I would encourage you to consider what you can do now to prepare for next year.
The summer is a great time for you and your parish's stewardship leaders to consider why your parish members should support the parish financially by asking the following questions:
- What is the parish mission?
- What difference does it make in its community?
- How do parish expenditures support individual ministries such as Christian Education, Outreach, Liturgy, etc.?
Many parishes have found it helpful to prepare a Narrative Budget which allocates parish expenditures among ministries rather than simply assigning them to budget line items such as electricity, snow removal, cost of priestly services, etc. The Diocese of Ottawa website includes a one-page guide to preparing a Narrative Budget, which can be found at this link.

The toolkit also includes examples of stewardship-related bulletin inserts, stewardship plans, commitments forms and stewardship timelines, among many other useful tools.
I would encourage you to look at these resources, which can greatly ease the task of preparing stewardship communications. During the more relaxed pace of summer is a good time to do so!
