**CORRECTION** The version of the SECO eNews you recently received had a "life and death" kind of typo - Our sincerest apologies go out to Dr. Casto, who is alive and well in West Virginia.

Casto, Sandefur join the Hall of Fame

Sandefur, Executive Director of the Optometry Association of Louisiana, and Dr. John Casto, SECO Past President from West Virginia, both receiving this prestigious honor. The ceremony was held on June 22 during Optometry's Meeting. Photos courtesy of the Optometry Association of Louisiana and West Virginia Association of Optometric Physicians.

Runninger writes one last article

When William John (Jack) Runninger, O.D., of Rome, GA and a Past President of SECO International, passed away earlier this month, he took did something almost no one has the opportunity to do - he wrote his own obituary, "prior to my demise, of course."

Filled with wry comments on his life, the obituary left a clear picture of a man who will be missed. It opens with a comment on his parents naming him William John then calling him Jack, which he said, "seems a rather stupid thing to do, and has caused all sorts of confusion during his life."

Runninger also commented on his penchant for finishing second in school (both high school and optometry school) and the fact that only two of the three journals for which he served as editor "folded under his leadership." The obituary also contained instructions for his funeral services, which were to "last no longer than 29 1/2 minutes" and be held at 11:00 a.m. "so that it will not conflict with his contemporaries' nap time."

Writing his own obituary seems a logical final step from a man who wrote a humor column for the Rome News-Tribune for more than 30 years. Read the complete obituary online.
