We continue to celebrate our 40th year, sharing the history of Harbec 1987-1997.

During Harbec's second decade, many significant changes and opportunities were in store. From a 2000 square foot space in a barn to a 10,000 square foot facility and from "Manufacturing" to "Plastics". They always found opportunities to expand its capabilities based on its diverse skill set, which then continued to broaden their abilities. They expanded into aluminum bridge tooling and leaped into the all new 3-D printing. As a business, there is always a degree of risk taking. These are circumstances that can sometimes make or break a business. Having a good team and leadership can navigate through the uncertainty involved and emerge as a better company, capable of more than they knew was possible.

Collaboration and Partnership: The Crucial Elements to Achieving a US Manufacturing Renaissance

The U.S. is now embarking on a manufacturing renaissance, and while the drivers for achieving this are usually thought to be skills and jobs, there are two other crucial elements which are often overlooked – collaboration and partnership.

Many international manufacturing firms, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, are working to strengthen and energize U.S. manufacturing and infrastructure, adding to the technological strength of the country while employing thousands of workers and providing needed skills and training.

Small business spotlight:
OptiPro Systems

It’s a far cry from how the company began, as CNC Systems, in 1982. Bechtold founded the business with his brother, Bob Bechtold, who already owned a plastic-injection company called HARBEC at the time. (That business still exists and also is in Ontario.)

“We started as a machine tool repair-rebuilding company,” Mike Bechtold said. “We were the little guys selling machine tools. He sold ‘em, I serviced ‘em. It was just the two of us for four or five years.”
