LOEWE Craft Prize 2018
Data limite: 17 de Outubro de 2017

"In 2016, the LOEWE FOUNDATION launched the international annual LOEWE Craft Prize to showcase and celebrate newness, excellence and artistic merit in modern craftsmanship. Aiming to acknowledge the importance of craft in today’s culture and recognise artisans whose talent, vision and will to innovate will set a standard for the future, LOEWE Creative Director Jonathan Anderson conceived the initiative inspired by LOEWE’s beginnings as a craft cooperative in 1846. ‘Craft is the essence of LOEWE. As a house, we are about craft in the purest sense of the word. That is where our modernity lies, and it will always be relevant,’ Anderson has stated".

CALL FOR ENTRY: ICONS AT PLAY
BROOKLYN METAL WORKS

Data limite: 1 de Setembro de 2017.

"Our objective is to showcase work that reinterprets cultural symbols and icons through the use of material, scale, wearability, and interaction. Our goal is to curate work that challenges and “plays” with the viewer’s understanding of what that symbol has come to represent. We are interested in icons and symbols that appear in the commercial jewelry world such as the bow, heart, snakes, crowns, keys and the faceted stone as well as in our everyday lives through emojis and other cultural symbols. We want to see these symbols interpreted from a different viewpoint, providing the viewer/wearer a new lens to interpret and experience icons; challenging the viewers preconditioned definition of what the icon represents".

Curators: Manuela Jimenez and Kendra Pariseault

Geological experiences - stone, concept and material

Com Patricia Domingues | Membro PIN
28 de Agosto a 1 de Setembro - 5 dias (30 horas)
@ The International Summer Academy of Gemstones & Jewellery at Campus Idar-Oberstein

"The landscape that we thoughtfully look at and build our dreams and expectations on, is mainly formed by stones. They are the essence of the natural world, and make up the foundation of all continents and mountains. But in a world ruled by human hands, stones have also been one of the main materials for the creation of cities, houses and monuments as well as tools for the making of objects and jewellery.

Idar-Oberstein, a place well-known for stoneworking, is replete with ateliers that are still working and exploring this millennium’s stone carving and faceting techniques. Surrounded by various mines and an unspeakably stunning landscape, Idar-Oberstein is per se a geological wonder and a place where different times and realities collide, the geological and the human.

Within this context “Geological experiences - stone, concept and material” intends to explore the artistic processes and different approaches regarding the relationship between man, stone and the landscape".

CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY IN CONTEXT
a Handshake blueprint

*Disponivel a 12 de Julho de 2017*

"In five complementary contributions, recognised authors draw a fascinating and complex picture of contemporary jewellery in the twenty-first century. Through a rich palette of themes, works, reports and concepts from current art practices, they illuminate the conditions and interconnections of education, making, presentation, marketing and networking in design and art using the example of the New Zealand Handshake project. This book will enrich and bring pleasure to all who are interested in the visual arts in their broadest sense!

Handshake is a unique mentoring programme in the art world, in which established artists spread their knowledge to less experienced protégés. The knowledge accumulated in this exchange, of a relationship based on feedback, is realised in exhibitions and joint projects".

LIV BLÅVARP
Jewellery – Structures in Wood

"Maple, birch, walnut, lemonwood and palisander are just a few of the woods from which Liv Blåvarp (b. 1956) creates exceptional one-off jewellery pieces. The rigidity or softness of the wood plays just as much of an important role in the selection process as its structure or texture. The works are comprised of numerous single elements, which fuse together to become sculptural volumes – tactile creations that come alive when touched. Yet at the same time Blåvarp’s expressive and colourful pieces remain flexible and wearable. Their forms are not clearly defined; associations to organic growth, animals and plants, light and shade, water and waves all come to mind. With around 55 works from 2002 to 2017 Liv Blåvarp presents the first comprehensive review of her creative output".

EMBOSSING, PUNCHING, GUILLOCHÉ ENGRAVING
Contemporary Artisanal Jewellery Production

"Embossing, punching and guilloche engraving are techniques that have almost faded into oblivion. These trailblazing manufactory production methods were crucial to the rise of Pforzheim’s jewellery industry in the nineteenth century. Today they are experiencing a new lease of life in contemporary jewellery. The ‘Manufactory-Style Jewellery Design’ project fosters the passing down of experiential knowledge through the collaboration of artisans and designers from three generations".

1990S JEWELLERY
The Hans Schullin Collection
Sophie Beer

"Initiated by Hans Schullin and directed by Fritz Maierhofer – both of them driven by the same passion for artistic jewellery – the ‘Design Workshop Schmuck’ took place in Graz between 1991 and 1998. Based on the idea of creating an additional alternative to the existing training in Austria, internationally renowned guest professors, such as David Watkins, Giampaolo Babetto and Gijs Bakker, were invited to develop projects with the jewellery artists and goldsmiths in attendance. More than sixty jewellery pieces by students and teachers can be found in this exceptional collection, which was exhibited for the first time in the Museum im Palais in Graz in 2012. The catalogue includes all details about the collection, interviews and artists’ CVs as well as a text on contemporary jewellery from the 1990s".

OTTO KÜNZLI. THE BOOK
Florian Hufnagl | Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich (eds.)

"The Swiss Otto Künzli (born in 1948) revolutionised modern jewellery design and is regarded as ‘one of the most intelligent and at the same time most critical artists in the world of jewelry’ (Ralph Turner: The New Jewelry, 1985/1994).

Over the course of his involvement with jewellery, spanning around 45 years, Otto Künzli achieved a unique status as an artist and pioneer, and also as an author and teacher, with widespread international influence. Renowned artists such as Karen Pontoppidan (Konstfack, Stockholm), Karl Fritsch (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology), David Bielander and Lisa Walker are amongst the graduates of the jewellery class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, which Künzli has been directing since 1991 as successor to Hermann Jünger.

This publication presents his complete multifaceted oeuvre to a wide readership for the first time. The monograph comprises not only his jewellery, but also multidisciplinary conceptual works in the fields of photography and installations. It is at the same time a review of, a current definition of and a future perspective on his work. The striking and unusual graphic design was created by Frederik Linke, as was the previous successful title "The Fat Booty of Madness."

Otto Künzli’s works are based on complex reflections and the visual power of the imagination. This has resulted in works characterised by minimalistic clarity and impressive technical perfection, full of wit and sensual intensity.

With contributions by Jacqueline Burckhardt | Walter Grasskamp | Florian Hufnagl | Ellen Maurer Zilioli | Pravu Mazumdar | Chantal Prod’Hom and Carole Guinard | Akio Seki | Otto Künzli".

ON COLLECTING
Documents on Contemporary Crafts No. 4 | André Gali (ed.) | Norwegian Crafts

"Art collectors and collections make up an important part of the contemporary arts and crafts infrastructure. Not only do museums and art collectors improve an artist’s financial situation by buying their work; just as important is the symbolic meaning of the collection. To be included in the ‘right’ collection or museum can give the artist a high level of recognition; at the same time the purchase secures the work a place in a system whose aim is to preserve the work for the future. Collecting is a selection process which has economic, social, political and art historical implications and consequences for the artist, the art scene and the public.

In On Collecting the authors look at collecting from public, private and personal perspectives to shed light on some of the structures that are responsible for how artworks become ‘collectable’ and thus available to the public in museums and public spaces".
