Mesquite City Council Resolution 927

Last week, the Mesquite City Council voted 4-1 to pass Resolution 927. We want to thank everyone who came out to the meeting to express your support for Gold Butte National Monument and to those who submitted comments to the Council. Now, we ask that you please send an email to Councilman Geno Withelder at gwithelder@mesquitenv.gov and thank him for voting no.

We remain opposed to Resolution 927 because it contains false assumptions and conclusions, notably with regard to water rights. The Proclamation for Gold Butte National Monument provides a written assurance of water rights, rights of way, and access to develop those rights (click here to read the Proclamation, water rights are addressed in 2 paragraphs on page 5). The Proclamation is federal law. Truly, the Virgin Valley Water District has never before had such a certainty of their water rights. It would be a disservice to the citizens of Mesquite to deny this assurance. 

One positive item is that all members of the Mesquite City Council acknowledged that Gold Butte needs and deserves protection. Moving forward, we hope that this is a common ground we can all build on. If we do not support the protections these places now hold, we will lose our antiquities and scientific treasures forever.
