A Victory to Celebrate: New Funding for Nonlethal Methods in Minnesota!

View this email in your browser
Dear wolf advocate:

We have some wonderful news to share: Our advocacy work played a vital role in passing into Minnesota law funding for farmers to purchase nonlethal methods for the reduction and prevention of wolf/livestock conflicts. This funding is available starting July 1 for livestock producers in Minnesota’s wolf country who choose to employ nonlethal wolf deterrents.

A reduction in wolf-livestock conflicts is critical to helping the wolf and communities co-exist and thrive and our pack of wolf advocates has worked for years on getting this funding passed into law – and with your support, participation and donations we finally made it happen. Thank you!

Each year in Minnesota around 200 wolves are killed by the USDA wildlife services (USDA-APHIS) in response to complaints of predation upon domestic animals. These new grant dollars—which will qualify for federal matching funds—will help reduce the needless destruction of both livestock and of wolves. By choosing these nonlethal methods, rather than baiting, trapping and killing wolves after a conflict, Minnesota farmers have the power and the potential to foster a shift in attitudes among all those raising livestock at the intersection of Minnesota’s farmland and wolf habitat.

Nonlethal methods include livestock protection animals (such as dogs), alarm/scare devices, and penning and fencing. Click here to learn more about nonlethal methods.

This victory is encouraging. Your donations and ongoing support will continue to fuel our advocacy work moving forward. Thank you.

Have a great 4th of July!
