Taking Out the Garbage

If you spend any time on social media, especially Facebook or Twitter, which have ostensibly become the ‘town crier’ of our society, you know the opinions of your friends, relatives, and even strangers. One cannot help but be aware of the outcries regarding the various malaises of our time. Although I don’t want to minimize the social, environmental, or political issues we deal with daily, there is a tendency to fall prey to the continuous lamenting and forget what is happening on the higher planes.

I will confess I have always had a general detachment from the daily dramas of the world around me. I don’t worry about natural “disasters”, disease, environmental issues, and so on. This doesn’t mean that I bury my head in the sand either. It just means that I don’t worry as much as other people. In fact, I really only become anxious about my personal situation. When I am experiencing anxiety, I eventually recognize it as a symptom of where I lack a deeper connection and the area where I need to do the most inner work.

In the early 1980’s, I attended the very first Whole Life Expo held in New York City. One of the things I did was to go to a panel of healers. I was moved by the final speaker on the dais, a Native American named Oshinnah Fast Wolf. She stood up and among the many captivating things this Medicine Woman said was simply, “take out your own garbage.” In other words, don’t blame your neighbor because they didn’t take out their “garbage”. Don’t be indignant about the existence of the garbage either. Just take out your own. In other words, when we focus on becoming conscious beings, there is that much more light in the world. If we lament, worry, and blame, we are only adding to the malaise and our own powerlessness. We are perpetuating what we fear.

I also think there is a danger in thinking we need to fix or change “the world”. Which version of the world is that, we need to ask ourselves. It’s like the proverbial adage about three blind men asked to describe what an elephant looks like. One describes the trunk, another, the tail, and a third, a leg. They do not see the whole elephant.  We can only see the world through our own eyes. The important thing that Spirit teaches us is that everything in existence is energy in constant motion and transformation. Nothing is absolute except what we may refer to as Source or God. Therefore, to create peace, harmony, wellness, etc., in our ‘world,’ we need to find it within ourselves. So let’s each take out our own garbage and make the world of our consciousness a better place.
