July Gardening Check-list

Fertilizing:
Turf:  Our grasses are generally of the cool season variety, and do not eat during the hot months.  Now is the time to apply granular humates to your lawn to help retain water, mitigate heat stress, and mobilize soil organisms and nutrients that your grass relies on.  We recommend Natural Guard Soil Activator, 100% humic acid (no synthetic nutrients like other "huma" products).  1 bag covers 2,000 square feet, and when you mention the newsletter, save 10% on your purchase of Soil Activator!
Bonus:  Humates naturally help buffer and lower soil pH (reduce alkalinity, a problem around here), making your lawn able to absorbs many more nutrients.

Blossom End Rot
EEK!  You've been waiting 2 months for your tomato harvest, and all of a sudden you tomatoes have a dark, sunken in spot on the blossom end, usually on paste/ canning type tomatoes.  This is caused by the plant's inability to utilize calcium because of :
1)  Not enough calcium in the soil
2)  Watering too much (calcium not being absorbed)
3)  Watering too little (calcium not be mobilized)
4)  Too much Nitrogen (blocking uptake of calcium)

Any way you slice it, you have a calcium issue.  You can prevent future blossom end rot by spraying with a highly available form of liquid calcium.  We have several to choose from.  Spraying a diluted mixture of Epsom salts can also help to mobilize calcium (1 tbsp. per gallon).

You can also pick up some of our fresh compost tea, fortified with liquid calcium and bone meal for quick uptake!

Mix Oyster shell into your garden this fall to boost your soil for next year's crop., but the best way to correct mid season is by picking up some of our fresh compost tea, fortified with liquid calcium and bone meal for quick uptake!

Lawn and Weed Issues
This is the time of year when your lawn starts to feel the stress of summer.  Most turf grasses we grow in Boise prefer cooler temps.
Watering:  lawns prefer deep and infrequent watering.  Try to water less often, but for longer periods of time.  1-2 inches of water per week, over 1-3 times per week is ideal. (higher frequency and quantity as temperature rises).

Billbugs:  If you are seeing billbug damage (lawn dies in patches and lifts like carpet), now is the time to spray damaged areas with Neem to stop damage.  Apply beneficial nematodes

Weeds:  Step away from the Round up . . . studies have linked the active ingredient in Round up, glyphosate to cancer and other immune problems.   Here are our suggested alternatives:

Horticultural vinegar:  20% acidity plus yucca extract.  Works as an burnout on any  plant with moist green growth.

Natria:  Collodial iron kills broadleaf weeds in lawns by causing iron overdose for plants.
