 Dear ARC Friends, 

Happy Summer and Happy Fourth of July!

We heard some really great news recently that the vegan population in the US has gone from 2% to 6% in the last few years. That is amazing growth! When we think of the current environmental crisis we're in, with animal agriculture being the number one cause of climate change, or the billions of animals suffering at any given moment because humans have decided to label them as food, rather than the sentient beings they are, we can easily become overwhelmed. Psychologists tells us that being overwhelmed can be a real barrier to compassion and certainly to making changes in our own behavior. Seeing how much the vegan population has grown should give us all good reason to have hope. Change is not only possible; it's happening! So congratulations and thank you! Like Nelson Mandela said "It always seems impossible until it is done." The best thing we all can do to create the world we want is to be the change.... So keep eating plants and living your compassion.

We do an all plant-based dinner the fourth Saturday of every month, always serving delicious food followed by interesting and enlightening presentations, speakers, and films. This past month, we were joined by Matt Lock, co-founder of the new plant based app Raddish. He shared with us how the new app will pair home based vegan cooks with people in the community looking for delicious vegan food. See below for information on how you can apply to be a cook for Raddish or sign up to become a Raddish user and gain access to all kinds of delicious plant-based food right here in Mobile!

Join ARC for our monthly cafe serving delicious all plant-based foods and offering enlightening presentations in the company of some of the most open-minded, compassionate folks in town. 

On our menu this month:
  • Red Lentil Chili
  • Cornbread
  • Mexican Mac 'n' Cheese
  • Community Garden Salad with creamy herb dressing
  • Butterscotch Cupcakes

We're excited to welcome Pat Hall and LeRoy Cassidy as our speakers this month. Pat and LeRoy will be talking about the mission, work, and success of the community gardens in town, as well as discussing Central's all veganically farmed garden, the only one of its kind in town. Talk will be followed by a tour of Central's garden.

Dinner by donation. All donations go to helping ARC continue to provide these valuable dinners and furthering ARC's mission to awaken respect and compassion for all sentient beings. 

Volunteers are always appreciated! For this dinner, we need help with set up/decorating/service (Please arrive at 4:30), as well as help cleaning up after dinner (Please plan to stay until about 10 pm). If you're intersted in volunteering, please message us. Thank you so much!

Fourth of July BBQ Tofu Rib Sliders
Original Recipe by Vanity and Thomas Ladner

Ingredients:
1/2 cup of your favorite vegan BBQ sauce
1 block of extra firm tofu
3 tablespoons of liquid smoke
3 tablespoons of water
1 tablespoon of garlic
1 tablespoon of onion powder
1 baguette
½ cup of vegan mayo
1 cup of broccoli slaw (shredded broccoli stems and carrot)
A sprinkle of chives
Sriracha to taste

Directions:
In a bowl, add the BBQ sauce, liquid smoke, water, garlic, and sriracha.

Mix well and set aside.

Slice tofu into thin strips and pour sauce onto it.

Wrap and set aside for at least an hour.

Heat up your grill and place tofu onto it. Close lid and check periodically.

Flip once the edges are crispy.

Take off grill, sprinkle chives on top, and set aside.

Cut baguette hoagie style and top with mayo, sriracha, and slaw.

Cut sandwich into slider size pieces.

Serve and enjoy!
