President's Message

Aloha Alumni!

The last two years have flown by! I want to thank the outgoing Board for all their hard work and dedication to keeping our organization moving smoothly. This Board has been incredible in putting forward a suite of programming that keeps our #APLP alumni ohana connected no matter where in the world we may be. Thanks to Global Pau Hana, I was able to connect with several alumni who were new to me as well as some old friends I hadn’t seen in several years.

The Navigator newsletter has helped keep us all aware of the awesomeness of this group. Our network continues to impress me with our strength, dedication, and commitment to important causes around the world from climate change and environment to math education and everything in between.

The APLP Multi Generation Mentoring Program keeps new and old generations connected and have an opportunity for professional networking.  And finally the Global Day of Service has allowed us to give back to our communities and try to make a sustainable difference. It has been an absolute pleasure to serve as your leader and I will truly miss my board and the greater APLP family I have connected with through this term. Best of luck to the next board!

Warmly,

Miloni Gandhi
President, 2015 – 2017 APLP Alumni Board

Nina's Moving On

by Nina Dutra
Aloha Alumni!
Nina M. Dutra, the APLP Senior Program Officer from Generations 10 – 16, has announced that she is moving on from the East-West Center.  After seven years of service to the APLP and other EWC Leadership Programs, she is moving back to the US mainland and will return to her previous position as an Army wife and collector of stray cats.  She will soon begin a second masters on the economics of gender, and pursue her PhD on reforming US economic policy in a way that actually supports women’s economic participation.  It has been a pleasure for Nina to serve the APLP community these past seven years, and she wishes all APLP alumni the best in future endeavours.

Message from SAM

by Dr. Scott MacLeod

Our long-running motto of Navigating Change seems more apt today than perhaps it has during anytime over the last 10 years. This is not just because the Hokule’a has finally returned to Honolulu after its three-year Journey around the world (with extensive APLP community involvement). The canoe arrived at Honolulu on June 17th with a flotilla of other vessels from across the Pacific. It was a spectacular testimony to positive change - an example for us all in so many ways.

The completion of Hokule’a’s journey reminds us of our own organizational journey: today for the Leadership Programs at the East-West Center navigating change is much more than a motto. We are working through multiple shifts in direction that hold unknown destinations.

The biggest current change for the leadership programs is the move of Nina Dutra back to the mainland to be with her husband.  Nina has for sure been one of our Master Navigators and the able hand on the rudder of our canoe. We will miss her a great deal.  We are also experiencing change in terms of how we organize ourselves. We are now part of a division called the Professional Development Program. Partly as a result of this shift we will have several new team members starting with us over the next two to three months.

The arrival of the new staff is part of the result of a strategic shift towards 1) delivering more contract based training, 2) creating a heightened role for alumni in sourcing and delivering content in the region and 3) a greater emphasis on development and distribution of the intellectual property we have honed over the years of our work. These three directions overlay one another. We will keep you informed as we chart our way through these new waters. Wayfinding is a collective act.

APLP Global Day of Service

by Chris Zobrist

Aloha APLP Alumni!

This year’s Global Day of Service saw many hours of focused effort from all four corners of the world. Locally in Honolulu, Christina Monroe and company met and had a yoga and beach clean-up effort at Waikiki. In Southeast Asia, Scott Coates met with local NGOs in Vietnam to learn and spread the word about their good work. In on-line efforts, Dayaprasad Kulkarni posted an Indeigogo campaign to support LGBT Rights. And in Arizona, I began a one-week silent meditation retreat with Shinzen Young, ending with a beautiful Lacota sweat lodge ceremony. Overall, APLP alumni around the world made great efforts to do good in their local communities.

Mahalo!

G16 APLP Nainao Thompson Scholar

by Gretchen McKenna Alther

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Phani Kumar, was selected as the G16 APLP Nainoa Thompson Scholar.

This award is named after Mr. Nainoa Thompson, longtime APLP mentor and expert in the ancient Pacific Islands tradition of wayfinding – a method of navigation on long ocean voyages using the stars, swells, and natural element as guides. Nainoa has received many honors for his lifework, including the National Geographic Society's Hubbard Medal, the Unsung Hero of Compassion award presented by the Dalai Lama, and the East-West Center's Asia Pacific Community Building Award.

Phani joins eleven other APLP fellows from past years who have been honored with this award because of their commitment to community service.

This cash award both recognizes and supports Phani’s ongoing work with the community and especially with young people. Phani has recently established an Art Center – a space for young people to explore and enhance their creativity and where he can continue to support young people’s engagement in healthy activities and habits.

This summer, Phani and his team are engaging 100 kids from across the city in dance, music, and arts workshops. This award will help him reach this goal.

APLP Alumni News

Reducing Road Accidents

Aloha. I, J.N.Pankaj (G13), am now superintendent of police of Jagatsinghpur District in India. The role of police is mainly focused on “prevention/detection of crime” and “maintenance of law and order”. Issues like road accidents are sadly among neglected duties. India, unfortunately, accounts for the highest road accidents fatalities in the world (148000 deaths in 2015). In our district alone, 111 persons died in road accidents.

One of the reasons of these high fatalities is the disinclination of people/passers-by to help the accident victims. If the accident victims get immediate care in the “golden hour” many precious lives can be saved. In a study, it was found that in around 75% cases, accident victims will not get any help from bystanders. Major reason for this cold-hearted reluctance is the “fear of police and legal hassles”.

We decided to make efforts to eradicate this “fear” by Promising the Good Samaritan that they shall not be harassed and also rewarding the Good Samaritan with Rs 2000/- and a letter of appreciation by district police if they help accident victims. This is already getting good response and hopefully we will be able to save many precious lives.

Clinic in Cleveland

by Dr. Dayaprasad G Kulkarni (G11)

Dear Yatris, Volunteers and AarogyaSevaks

We have some exciting news this Doctor's Day to share with you. AarogyaSeva is happy to announce that we will soon be starting a free clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks on behalf of all our volunteers and patient community to the kind and generous Dr Nirmala and Dr Veerendra Nandigam, who without blinking an eyelid are graciously donating their clinic and practice to AarogyaSeva to serve this noble cause.

At this time we need your best wishes, good will, most of all support to give life to this benevolent cause.

Parinaama Development Foundation

by Melissa Pawneshing (G10)

Asia Pacific Leadership Program Fellows visited the Parinaama Development Foundation. They hosted the Asia Pacific Leadership Program GIST Fellows from East West Center, Hawaii, USA in March 2017. The research study visit entailed 8 days of immersion in the field in Western Odisha region, interacting with the trainees and women workers at the micro enterprises, weavers and other key linkages established within the region for value addition of the garments. Several business contacts were initiated on behalf of the organization and introduction to a number of valuable clients. The team also took the opportunity to visit the government hospitals, key flagship programs led by district administration, visited several villages to explore the lifestyle, livelihoods, health issues, food and culture.

Call for Inspiring Change-Makers

Greetings from Bali!  I'm soliciting nominations for inspiring change-makers from the APLP network.

  • Bella Galhos (EWC 2011), Timor-Leste
  • Robin Lim, Indonesia
  • Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner (UH 2012), Marshall Islands
And now, we are looking for the next Impact Hero 2018! Our selection criteria focus on the individual's qualities, motivation, and potential; we are agnostic about geography, sector, organizational maturity, etc.

UK Government Scholarship

by Shivan Fazil (G16)

The post-APLP experience has already been a great success for me as the first EWC fellow from Iraqi Kurdistan. I have just been awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship to pursue postgraduate studies in Middle East Politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. My leadership learning and time spent in Hawaii have both played an important role in furthering my understanding on pressing global issues, and increased my chances in securing such a prestigious scholarship. This would not have been possible without the stimulus lessons, leadership skills and mentorship I have acquired from the entire APLP staff and cohorts during my fellowship at the EWC.
