The Daily Press' Teel continues with Virginia AD Littlepage, this time on a trying past year for the Cavs leader & what the future holds. On his time away from the department to attend to a family issue, "I had the very humbling experience of feeling as though I wasn’t missed. But that’s why it’s so important to hire really good people and allow them to do their job […] I was not involved on a day-to-day basis for the better part of three-and-a-half months. There were less than half-a dozen things over that course of time where I was called or asked to weigh in, and that just speaks to people that are very, very good and respected what it was that I had to take care of during that period of time." The mother of Littlepage's wife recently passed away, adding to the "tough stretch." Says he & wife Margaret have talked about what they'd like to do once he's retired, but no personal deadline exists. Further, does not think a succession plan will be put in place, "Who knows whether I would be asked who my successor should be or whether I would play a role. That’s not for me to decide." More, including some video of the interview. (link)
The State's Connolly traces the steps in the hiring process that led former USF Baseball HC Kingston to South Carolina as the Gamecocks new skipper. Indicates USC AD Tanner did talk to Clemson HC Lee during the process, though "the two never had serious conversations about the job." One notable leader Tanner did have serious conversation with was Florida boss O'Sullivan who brought a National Championship to Gainesville & decided to stay with the Gators. Wake Forest HC Walter was in the mix before signing a new seven-year deal in Winston-Salem. Tanner says many media reports were accurate, but, "You guys didn’t get the other candidates, so that was good. I stayed on task. I was able to get to the people I needed to get to and honestly I did vet out a lot of candidates. I wanted to get it right. I wasn’t concerned about it being fast." (link)
With its Russell Athletic deal expiring this time next year, Southern Miss AD Gilbert expects to go with one partner across the board & ratchet up the financial components of a new apparel agreement. Currently, Baseball is with Under Armour, WBB wears Nike & MBB dons Adidas shoes. Everyone else is Russell. In 2013, the Golden Eagles inked with Russell for five years & $2.75M. (link); The Golden Eagles are also prominently featured in former FB student-athlete & NFL legend Favre's latest commercial for Copper Fit. (link)
The Wichita Eagle's Suellentrop believes Missouri Valley Conference Commish Elgin gets too much blame for Wichita State's exit to the American. "Most of that is misinformed. The responsibility for improving the MVC rests largely on the schools. Schools set budgets, raise money, prioritize and hire. […] The MVC can lead and direct and assist. Ultimately, it can only do so much. The Valley’s record over the past 30 years indicates it largely squeezed the most out of its resources, a credit to the schools and Elgin’s leadership on issues such as the conference tournament site, scheduling, Bracket Busters and ESPN3." (link)
July 1st marked a big day for SIDEARM as SBD/SBJ's Smith tweets that the Learfield-owned web firm launched 33 new athletic department sites, including eight for 'Power 5' members. Calls it an "incredible growth story." SIDEARM Prez/CEO Rubin: "By the time the summer is over we will power 41/65 Power 5 Websites." Looks like Western Kentucky, UAB & UTEP are a part of the 33 flips. (linklink, link, link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Security measures will tighten for 280 airports around the world that are the last point of departure for flights to the United States as the Department of Homeland Security has outlined new measures to ensure safety. Aviation experts say to expect longer lines & some delays with the time needed to upgrade systems & procedures to match the protocols. Costs for new equipment & technology are said to be expensive with airlines & airport operators sharing the outlay. Smaller airports are expected to be the most impacted. (link)

No official word on an extended contract for Penn State FB HC Franklin, but Nittany Lions AD Barbour offers this, "Keeping James at Penn State for a long, successful tenure is a priority. We will announce these details when appropriate." Speculation has been around since the end of last season, magnified this past week by comments from prospective student-athlete Enis, who committed to PSU & said he was excited about Franklin's new five-year deal. (link)
College of Charleston AD Roberts: "We will take the appropriate amount of time necessary to hire the best coach for CofC." Per a source, former HC Heath was dismissed with cause & will not receive exit compensation. The Post & Courier's Miller says Heath is expected to file a lawsuit against the university in an attempt to recover $450K+ still left on his contract. A trio of potential candidates comment publicly on their interest in the job: Former South Carolina skipper Holbrook, former Cougars AC & current NC State pitching coach Foxhall & Clemson AC LeCroy all verbally pursue. (link)
Eastern Kentucky AD Lochmueller turns to Director of Athletics Marketing Park as the new SWA in Richmond. Lochmueller: "Her experience over the years will provide excellent insight into representing our women's sports programs and coaches. She has always had the student-athletes at the forefront in her vision and will continue to be a great and valued member of our leadership team." Park: "I know I have a lot to learn, but I feel I am ready for this career move and look forward to working with our athletics administration as we prepare for the upcoming 2017-18 season." (link)
Kansas swaps a student seating section of Allen Field House to donor seating in an agreement worked out with the KU Student Senate. The 420 seats in Section 19 are now available only to "All-American" level donors, with a $10K minimum annual contribution the tickets go for between $1,275-$1,650 for the season. In exchange, the student season-ticket combo will drop from 179 to $159 and there will be 20 season tickets available for Pell Grant-eligible, low-income and first-generation students, given away for free through a lottery on a game-by-game basis. Second such move by the athletic department since 2014, when 120 seats in section U were changed to donor seating, mainly as a response to the SGA voting to eliminated a student fee that gave athletics $1M+ annually. (link)
Interesting read on the MBB roster turnover for both New Mexico & New Mexico State MBB programs, which new Aggies HC Jans says is a microcosm of what's going on around the nation. The Lobos lost 10 student-athletes from last year's team due to transfers & graduations, while NMSU saw seven depart. Of course, part of the storyline between the two programs is the move of UNM HC Weir to Albuquerque from Las Cruces. Jans: "I think the days of building a program are somewhat archaic in terms of how you put together a team because of the turnover in rosters of both players and coaches (not) being as patient as they used to be. [...] You always have both winning now and preparing for the following seasons in the back of your mind." (link)
ESPN/TV/OTT: Podcasting has reached a tipping point: Too much quality content to keep up. But, a holiday weekend produces some down time to do some listening & one you should absolutely check out is Sports Illustrated's Deitsch & his latest conversation with ESPN expert & headlining author Miller. Of key note: Both think more layoffs are coming to ESPN, both believe ESPN will have to renew a deal with the NFL in the early 20s, Miller mentions how EVP Magnus was pursued hard for a job outside of Bristol a couple of years back, but was not released from his contract (think: college sports business, though Miller doesn't go into specifics). Also, Miller continues to say moves in the next two years by ESPN will set the course for the next 20. Lots more. (link); Another more than worth your time, especially if you want to get in the weeds on TV advertising (you should), is @SportsTVRatings & AdAge's Crupi. Nielsen's new out-of-home measurement capabilities, crucial for sports, explained in detail. (link); Finally, he has a solid podcast, but this is a written piece from media industry analyst Jackson, who, like Deitsch & Miller, think ESPN will re-up with the NFL. Jackson goes deep into the numbers for both ESPN & the NFL & notes how important reach is for the NFL, which could keep major rights packages off digital platforms for the foreseeable future. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Per the Tampa Bay Times' Baker, Florida is under a Title IX investigation in connection to its handling of the sexual assault claims brought against FB student-athlete Colloway back in late 2015. The university says it is fully cooperating. Attorney for the accuser, "It seems like one of the crazier things we've seen, and yet I would have to believe there's smart people at the school. I think we want to talk to the school a little bit and find out how something like this actually happened before we decide on anything else." More. (link)
Kent State's $3M revamped training facility profiled by Cleveland.com's Alexander & includes a video of Golden Flashes AD Nielsen touring the space with context on the why & what. Overall, training space for KSU went from a mere 1,500 square feet to over 10,000, capacity from 10 student-athletes to over 40 at any one time. Includes a laundry list of bells & whistles. Nielsen: "Again, in season, the different sports actually have to schedule their recruiting visits through here. It has become so popular that the coaches literally begin and end their tours with parents and recruits in this facility." (link)
Oklahoma State decreased the capacity of Boone Pickens Stadium by 3,428 to create more space for comfortable seating. In some locations the seat width was only 14 inches, but after the reduction those same seats will have 20 inches of room. Roughly 600 tickets had to be relocated as part of the effort, causing a bit of friction. Asst. AD for Ticket Operations Sumrall: "In the grand scheme of things, that's not that much. Yes, those 197 accounts were going to be mad at us, but it's something that needed to be done and we've talked about it for years. Why not now going into a great year like this?" (link)
East Tennessee State's new FB stadium will be ready for opening kick on September 2nd as Bucs brass have been showing season ticket holders & supporters through the facility as the last items are completed. Bristol Herald Courier's Gregory with a great description, "Featuring a classic horseshoe design complete with a grassy knoll and soothing vista of Buffalo Mountain, the facility will include field turf along with skyboxes, club seats and mid-field seats, a pressbox tower, large video board, and nearly 4,000 parking spaces. The seating capacity could be expanded to 10,000 with standing-room-only fans." Senior Assoc. AD/COO Carter: "There’s been a great healing process that’s taken place from a very difficult time when football went away. To be able to put that deep in their rear view mirror and be here two months away from the grand opening of a new stadium – it’s a wonderful thing." (link)
Beer Me: New Belgium's Colorado State-inspired Old Aggie Superior Lager was released yesterday as hundreds sought a sip. New Belgium brand manager Glasenapp says the brewer & CSU have been "kindred spirits" for a long time. A Rams logo pre-1957, back when the university was Colorado A&M, is the featured look. More. (link); Marshall fans are excited about expanded beer sales for FB games. Of particular note in this piece is that Sodexo is investing in the immediate concourse improvements to handle the sales with athletics paying back the vendor over time. (link); Lastly, The Economist says beer consumption is going down around the world. C'mon, really? (link)
Also Noticed: USA Today's Wolken via Twitter on Wichita State's move to the AAC, "Recently spoke to an AD in the league who was initially against adding Wichita. Said he changed his mind after seeing the smooth transition." (link); Looks like Michigan FB HC Harbaugh is going to start posting behind-the-scenes video content to YouTube. (link); Louisville has decreased the size of its internal committee to aid in a full Presidential search. An RFP is set to go out in the next two weeks to secure a search firm to start the process. Timeline is to have a new Prez by the Fall of 2018. (link); Facebook's "internet-breaming drone" Aquila successfully completed a 1-hour, 46-minute flight, with a clean landing, as the company continues to push for ubiquitous global internet. However, 1:46 seems like a long way from a fleet staying in the air 24/7 to offer coverage. (link)
