Prime Minister of India, H.E. Narendra Modi, accompanied by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, honored the Museum with a visit during his recent trip to Israel—the first of an Indian Prime Minister.
To mark this occasion, a special display of objects from the Bene Israel, Cochin, and Baghdadi Indian Jewish communities was installed within the Cochin Synagogue, including a lavish Torah curtain, illuminated marriage contracts, and rare costumes. Cochin-born Jewish Israeli singers welcomed the Prime Ministers with two traditional songs in the Malayalam and Hebrew languages.

Lyric Suite: Works on Paper by Robert Motherwell – A selection of works by American artist Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), a member of the New York School. This display features six ink drawings on Japanese paper inspired by composer Alban Berg's work Lyric Suite, alongside a number of prints from the collection of the Prints and Drawings Department.

No Place Like Home – An ironing board becomes absurd and threatening, the doors of a house are displaced, a glass of beer sprouts a tail. Artists transform domestic objects in order to change our relationship with them and to provoke a fresh response to the familiar. Exhibition closes July 29. In the Press>>
Venetian Splendor: Marking 500 Years of the Venice Ghetto – Marking the anniversary of the world's first institutionalized ghetto established in 1516 in Venice, a selection of ceremonial objects created in Venice and used throughout Italy is displayed along the Museum's Synagogue Route. These opulent, beautifully crafted objects demonstrate the contrast between the harsh conditions of the ghetto and the richness of its cultural and spiritual life. Exhibition closes August 28.
The Israel Museum is a contributor to the joint exhibition of the Vatican Museum and the Jewish Museum in Rome on the depiction of the Menorah over the centuries. Major IMJ loans include Poussin’s The Destruction and Sack of the Temple of Jerusalem and important archaeological artifacts. Exhibition closes July 23. In the Press>>

Chicago, USA: June 25-Sept. 10, 2017 & Paris, France Oct. 9, 2017-Jan. 21, 2018 – Paul Gauguin's The Fire Dance (Upa upa) will be on loan from our IMJ collection to the Art Institute of Chicago and to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris as part of the travelling exhibition Gauguin: Artist as Alchemist.
New Haven, USA: Aug. 31-Nov. 19, 2017 – Social Construction: Modern Architecture in British Mandate Palestine, a traveling exhibition of the IMJ Department of Architecture and Design, will be on display at the Yale School of Architecture.

Dr. Allison Kupietzky in Los Angeles, USA, Aug. 10-22 – Our Collections Database Manager, Dr. Allison Kupietzky will participate in an international workshop on partnering towards a multilingual thesaurus at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Dr. Adolfo Roitman in Mexico City, Mexico, Aug. 28 & Madrid, Spain, Oct. 5, 9, 10 – Kicking off the 70th year of their discovery, Dead Sea Scrolls Curator and Head of the Shrine of the Book Dr. Adolfo Roitman will become an honorary member of the Academy of Science and Faith at the Pontifical University in Mexico. In honor of this event, Dr. Roitman will give a talk on The Demoniacal Origin of Evil in Ancient Judaism.
Adolfo will also be a guest lecturer at the University of Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid—details to follow.

Every summer, the IMJ welcomes a group of interns from around the world to dive into a variety of projects in our departments. IMJ 2017 summer interns are working together with a team of wood conservators and National Service staff to restore and refurbish furnishings at the Rockefeller Museum, one of the IMJ's two satellite locations. The Rockefeller Museum was built by the British in the 1930s and today exhibits archaeological finds from the area in original showcases and furnishings built in the British period.
Now on at the Rockefeller – Ashkelon: A Retrospective–30 Years of the Leon Levy Expedition – A bustling port city at the crossroads of major land and sea routes, Ashkelon was a meeting place for peoples and cultures for over 5,000 years. This exhibition displays a wide selection of marble statues, coins, jewelry, figurines, and pottery found over the course of two centuries and displayed together for the first time.

AFIM Celebrates Summer – Over 225 guests attended the AFIM Art Acquisition Fundraiser on June 22 at the Jane Hotel, NYC. The celebration was chaired by Associates Jamie Bernstein, Lily Snyder, and Simon Swig, and artists Zoë Buckman, Nir Hod, and Misha Kahn. Over $40,000 was raised for the Israel Museum. Special musical entertainment was provided by DJ Roof Alexander.
The Israeli Friends "Here and Now" Contemporary Israeli Art Acquisitions Committee purchased six new works for the IMJ this year by artists Micha Bar-Am, Guy Ben Ner, Michal Rovner, Hana Sahar, Micha Ullman, and Noa Yaffe. During the last eight years of activity, the committee has purchased 120 works by 74 artists for over NIS 5.5 million.

In June, Senior Jewish Art and Life Wing Curator Noam Bar'am-Ben Yossef participated in the annual ICOM Costume Committee meeting on The Narrative Power of Clothes, held at the London College of Fashion. Noam spoke about One Woman, Many Transitions: Deborah Davidoff from Uzbekistan as a model of the transformations of Jewish women‘s dress. While in London, Noam continued her fieldwork, documenting the personal stories of local Baghdadi and Bukharan women with a special focus on clothing and photographs.
IMJ is pleased to announce the appointment of Ahiad Ovadia as Archaeology Wing Curator of Prehistoric Cultures. Ahiad holds an MA in Archaeology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, specializing in prehistoric archaeology. Ahiad previously served as an archaeologist and researcher of prehistoric eras at the Hebrew University Institute of Archaeology. We wish Ahiad the best of luck in his new role.

Sonja Lahnstein-Kandel receives a Doctor of Philosophy Honoris Causa from the University of Haifa.

Just one day after receiving an Israel Museum Honorary Fellowship at the 2017 International Council in Jerusalem, Sonja Lahnstein-Kandel, Chairwoman of the German Friends of the Israel Museum, received a Doctor of Philosophy Honoris Causa from the University of Haifa.
Sonja is a leading figure and respected advocate of civil rights, tolerance, and understanding in Germany, as well as a promoter of German-Israeli relations and a friend of Israel devoted to efforts of Jewish-Arab coexistence. Sonja is known for her strong commitment and dauntless advocacy for acceptance and responsibility in the face of rising international intolerance.
