President's Message

Greetings, Baltimore Road Runners Club!

Happy 4th of July, BRRC!

It has been our tradition to have our annual picnic in late June, before the 4th of July holiday.  This year, on June 25th, we held our annual club picnic at Brian Flowers’ home  on a sunny afternoon.  Great food, great drink, and great running camaraderie were had by all!   We also presented many awards, as BRRC always does.  We awarded Scholarships, Performance Awards, Hall of Fame inductions, and Special Recognition Awards.  Congratulations to everyone!  You can read more about our awards here at http://www.brrc.com/awards and there are fun pictures here https://www.flickr.com/photos/brrc/.

The highlight is presenting our Special Recognitions Awards.  These awards recognize the unique talents of our club, what makes us more than a running club.  Our fantastic volunteers and coaches are recognized, and they graciously deflect the recognition to all the support they receive. It is a time to give thanks.

It is appropriate on the 4th of July to celebrate our inalienable rights, especially the right to Life and The Pursuit of Happiness.   Running is a choice we make, a right we own, our right to pursue happiness.   Our club members Linda Tice and Dan Buccino are lifetime runners and they get it.  We have awarded Linda and Dan Special Recognition Valor Awards.  They offer a few sentences here, and you will find their messages inspiring.

“I was diagnosed two years ago with breast cancer and subsequently underwent two surgeries, chemo, and radiation.  My care givers told me to keep doing everything I was used to doing, since I had suffered enough loss.  I did!  I began running as soon as I was able, but it was Laurie Amattuci who inspired me to go big!  With the help of my daughter, Leslie Fort, the day after my 70th birthday, I ran the Bottle and Cork 10 Miler in under two hours.  Maureen Hall gave me a tee shirt that said "Be the Inspiration!  It doesn't matter how slow you go, just don't ever stop!"  I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to say that running, and the running community, saved my life!“  Linda Tice.

"The past few years have been very difficult, with a few massive highs, and a series of crushing lows, culminating in a diagnosis of, and surgery for, thyroid cancer. While I don't know much about valor, running has certainly helped me survive. Not only is it the best, cheapest, and most reliable medicine, running has become meditation for me because 'wherever you go, there you are.' While the volume, intensity, and paces of my running and racing have declined considerably, since synthetic thyroid hormone just doesn't compare to the real thing, I've still managed to complete the GPS 18 years in a row. Suit up, show up, and shut up."  Dan Buccino.

July brings a plethora of running opportunities!  We hope you enjoy some of the many races and running activities out there.

At BRRC, we have some unique races that you may want to consider.  We are in the middle of our Track Meet Series  that we host at the excellent track at Goucher College.  Track meets are harder to find, but you can find them at BRRC.  Entries are Free, Enjoy!  Check out www.brrc.com for our schedule.

Trail Runs are also harder to find, but you can find them at BRRC.   Our trail runs are very popular, and nominal cost.  Check out www.brrc.com for our schedule of events.

Exercise your inalienable rights, go for a run! Happy 4th of July!
