Hi << Test First Name >>

Welcome to the July Herald.

NDIS - Now available across all of NSW & ACT

The NDIS is now available across the whole of NSW and the ACT. We’ve seen lots of positive feedback about the NDIS from deaf and hard of hearing people including receiving new and improved hearing aids and increased access to interpreters. For example, with NDIS funding people are now able to book interpreters for children’s sports awards days, visiting the vet and even puppy training.

Would you like to apply for the NDIS?

If you are under 65, you can contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to begin the registration process.

1. Through the NRS call the NDIA on 1800 800 110.

2. They will ask you a few simple questions like;
- Are you an Australian citizen?
- Are you under 65?
- Do you live in an NDIS area?
- Do you have a permanent disability?

3. If you answer ‘yes’ to all the questions, they will ask you for your email
address or postal address so that they can send you the Access Request
Form.

4. You need to complete the Access Request Form to register for the NDIS. The
Access Request Form will ask you for proof of your age, citizenship and
residency. They will also ask you for evidence of your disability.

5. When you have finished the form you need to post or email it back to the
NDIA.

6. The NDIA will then process the paperwork and contact you to organise a
pre-planning meeting. It may take the NDIA a few months to contact you
because there are thousands of people trying to access the NDIS.

If you have any questions about the Access Request Form or would like support completing the form, please feel free to contact us at ndis@deafsociety.com.

American hip-hop artist coming to Sydney!

In 2010, we welcomed Finnish rapper Signmark to our shores. In 2017, we will welcome American hip-hop artist Sean Forbes to Sydney for one show only. Sean will be performing at the Metro Theatre on Friday, 15th September.

Sean’s performance are a visual feast; using sign language, graphics and captions to express himself along with the thumping beats of hip-hop music. This is a not to be missed performance from an international deaf artist.

Australia backs world health leaders to make hearing loss a priority

Health leaders throughout the world have made hearing loss an international priority at a meeting of the World Health Assembly in Geneva. Australia was among the many member nations that supported a strategy to tackle the massive social and economic costs of hearing loss and ear disorders.

Around the world, 360 million people live with disabling hearing loss including 32 million children. In Australia, 3.5 million people live with hearing loss.

The social and economic impacts of hearing loss are significant and needs to be addressed by the government. For example, deaf and hard of hearing adults have a much higher unemployment rate than the general population and this has a huge impact on workforce productivity, income from tax and the cost of social supports.

The Deaf Society is a supporter of a public campaign called Break the Sound Barrier that calls on Australia’s state, territory and federal health ministers to act now to avoid the growing national economic and social impacts of hearing loss. We encourage you to join the campaign too, visit www.breakthesoundbarrier.org.au.
