Greers Ferry Lake Shoreline Cleanup

Join our volunteers at the Choctaw Marina as the South Fork Team collects dozens of bags of waste accumulated along the shoreline.

The Lake and River Cleanup has been a crucial effort for almost 50 years, and teams from across the region help preserve our lake's natural beauty, both on land & water.

Call 501-745-6444 for more information, or you can register directly for the cleanup crew by clicking the button below:

2017 Great American Total Solar Eclipse

August 21

The first documented total solar eclipse exclusively visible in the US

On Aug. 21, 2017, people across the United States will see the sun disappear behind the moon, turning daylight into twilightcausing the temperature drop rapidly and revealing massive streamers of light streaking through the sky around the silhouette of the moon. On that day, America will fall under the path of a total solar eclipse .

The so-called Great American Total Solar Eclipse will darken skies all the way from Oregon to South Carolina, along a stretch of land about 70 miles (113 kilometers) wide. People who descend upon this "path of totality" for the big event are in for an unforgettable experience.

Monthly Mystery:

Can you identify this plant? Flex your taxonomical muscles with this challenge. Watch for the answer in next month's edition!

Last Month's Mystery:

Asclepias tuberosa, or simply Butterfly Weed, is hardly a weed as its common name suggests. This vibrant, hardy perennial lacks the creamy sap of its milkweed relatives, but is one of the primary wildflower varieties critical to Monarch life cycles. Pioneers knew it "Pleurisy Root" for the medicinal compounds found in its root. Today, it is a prized ornamental plant much-loved by all pollinator species.

Consider planting the low-maintenance Butterfly Weed in your own pollinator garden! You'll be regaled with neon red-orange blossoms as well as a cloud of grateful fluttering friends, from butterflies to hummingbirds.

This summer, we were thrilled to see the first milkweed blooms from our Nature Center planting project. Stop by and see the results of all the hard work, or visit our sister garden at the Pollinator Meadow in Clinton!
The Nature Center's 2 miles of beautifully maintained walking trails are open year-round! Located on Bachelor Road off Hwy 330 in Choctaw, near Greers Ferry Lake.
